On to-morrow, October 11, fowa and Ohio will hold their annual state elections. Iowa will elect state officers and a legislature that will be called upon to elect a United States Senator. The legisiature last chosen had a republican majority of 9¢ on joint bailot in a total member- ship of For state officers there are three tiekets in the field—republican, democratic and greenback. There is no doubt that the repub- Ticans will elect state officers and legislature by an ample majority. in Ohio, state officers and a legislature are to be elected. For state officers, there are four tickets in the field:—republican, dem- cratic, greenback and prohibition. The last legislature had a republican majarity of 31 on The Joint ballot in a total membership of 151. ‘vote of the state in recent years has bee! De The result this * 0 year,” isa little uncertain. ‘The democrats have just put out a claim that they will elect Bookwalter governor, and carry both houses ofthelegislature. The probabilities®™ are, however, that the republicans will carry the state by a small majority. ————— The Demoeratie Unpleasaniness in New York. The New York state democratic convention will meet at Albany, to-morrow, to nominate a ticket for state officers below that of governor. ‘The usual ficht between factions over the admission of delegates is on hand, this time assuming a triangular shape from New York city. Last year the leaders and managers of | Irving Hall virtually abandoned that organiza- tion and proceeded to organize the New York county democracy, which has been recognized by the party authorities of the state and by the U.S district court as the regular demoeratic | party of that county. A few politicians got Possession of the deserted Irving Hall and set up a claim to the title of resularity, after | having formed a coalition n Tammany as against the count democrae The police commissioners, in allotting dem-! ceratic inspectors of election, recognized this claim and divided the inspectors between Irving Hall, Tamm: democrats. Judze Blatcl ny and the county however, in ap- pointing supervisors of election, decided that all the rights, title and interest in the demo- cratic organization formerly belonging to Irving Hall §: rd to yunty democracy. Tam- many and Irving Hall will demand recognition of the convention, but it is evident enough that both will be refused. The eountry democrats usted with the ne rrels of the city democrats, and they mani- festiy hold ble for most of past troubles m will be pr uptly rejected. will probably be served likewise. of wh nmany will do Kelly may boldly oppose as he did in 1879. ders Then the qr the ory of the regal other refusal te any any share or lot in | party affairs will disrupt its organization, and | bring its followers back to the democratic fold individually instead of collectively. Boss Kelly, however, has a wonderful influence over his fol- lowers, as has been shown by his maintenance of order and discipline throuch months of hard fighting without any patronage whatever to dis- pense among them. —_—_+e»—___ Tn this day and generation, when brevity and @onciseness are regarded as essential in writing for the public, why should the old system of wordy legal phraseology be retained? Take the Guiteau indictment for example. It is words, words, words, repetition upon repetition. But the lawyers say that it is doneto prevent any flaw being picked in the construction. But the question is, dees this ancient and cumbersome method of drafting legal documents prove more effective in this respect than a briefer and more Girect style? The records of courts every day show cases dismissed because of defects in the Tanguage of indictments. The ponderous ver- bosity of one of these indictments 13 of itself confusing. It would seem that the very super- fiuity of words is likely to cause a blunder or defect in a lenzthy instrument ot this kind; and that a document of the same character could be Written in the brief. concise method employed by newspapers, which would, at the same time, be intelligible to the general public and legally accurate. Ifthe present laws do not admit of a common sense form of indictment, devoid Of all this tedious verbiage, it is time they were amended.
