Your, correspondent, in his letter of yesterday, wrote | the name of Rey. Mr. Benson, when he should have used that of Rey. Mr. Littleton, of Carroll county, as the preacher at the evening service, and Mr. Benson delivered the exhortation. AMONG THE VISITORS on the ground yesterday were the Rev. Thos. | McCormick, familiarly known as Father Mo} Cormick, who is now in his 90th year. He is th uncle of Commissioner Morgan and is a remark: lent bodily health, without an ache or pain, in fact he is in better health than he was at 30— although he does not weigh as much. Rev. J. W. Smith, of Grace Church, Washington; Rev. Mr. Brown, of Laurel, and Rev. Mr. Stewart, of A. A. Co., of the M. Church, and Rev. Mr. Trout and Rev. Mr. Hall (of 9th street chureh) of the M. P. church. THE SERVICES YESTERDAY. The young people's meeting in the meeting tent at 8 o'clock, yesterday morning, was a very interesting one, the experiences related being | short and to the point; and the singing was ex- cellent. The general experience meeting at 9 o'clock was conducted by Rey. Mr. Laselle, and Was a repetition of that in the meeting tent on a larger scale, and was continued until close up to the preaching hour. The trains brought out a great many people, and as the day woreonthe country people came in large crowds to see the last of the meeting, that ere were good congregations at the day services; probably 600, Rey. Dr. Ward preached at the 11 o'clock ser- | vice, fromJohn xvi., 33: “These things T have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace, inthe world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, have overcome the world.” His sermon was a feeling appeal to the unconverted, and was followed by an exhort: tion by Rey. Mr. Bens At the afternoon service Rey. J. W. Smith, of Washington, offered t Mr. Benson preached from_Prover! 2 N Son Give Me Thy Heart. is Was a personal appeal to the unconverted, and was listened to with marked attention and was foliowed by prayer. * AFTER THE SERVICES, when not engaged in taking tea, the young peo- ple promenaded, watched the’ railtoad trains and “creamed,” while the older ones related reminiscences of former camps, and some of the ministers mingled their conversation on relig- ious subjects with jokes or relation of funny incidents in their career. OLD-TIME CAMPS. Some of the old campers—R. D. Woodward, John Gardner and Caleb Kelly—who remem- bered the camp of 1828, were listened to with much attention. This they described as one in charge of Rey. James Sewall, when nearly one hundred people were converted. In the lan- guage of one of them “about every person tent- ing on the ground went home a Changed man, woman or child.” In 1829 Rey. Mr. Peyton held acamp of about thigty tents, and it was a very successful meeting. On leaving this camp M Peyton held one near West river, and while ex horting ruptured a blood vessel and fell dead on the stand. Then there was an interval of twent years before another meeting was held here Rey. Mr. Best holding one in 1848, and Rey. Mr. Collins in the following year. These meetings were described as rather primative, the tents being filed with straw, while ditches around them carried off the rain water. | After another interval of 21 years a circuit camp was held in 1870, followed by camps in which the Washington people joined in ‘Tl and ‘72. Subsequently other camps were held by the M. E. church until in 1878 the Methodist Protest- ants held a semi-centennial anniversary camp meeting to celebrate the organization of the chureh. AYONG THE MINISTER'S JOKES were the tollowin, lergyman named Crane was remarking on peculiar names, and noticed that Drinkhouse was one of the uncommon, pened to be not a singular appellation, and she replied, half as singular as that of Crane—one who wab- pout in the water.” Another referred to a lady not speaking to Rey. Mr. Trout as he passed when she replied, “Oh, I don’t like such tis! It was apparent. as Bro. Trout was a married man, that he had already been hooked. The afternoon trains were looked for with eagerness, and while some visitors arrived some of the older campet iously sought for to turi the President. The meeting in Bro. Robinson's large tent, at : 45 o'clock, was attended bya crowd, which ex tended some distance from the tent, and many gave their experiences, THE CLOSING EVENING MEETING. At 73g o'clock the tabernacle was filled, the consregation numbering over ‘six tiundred. After some preliminary remarks by Rev. Dr Murray, Dr. Kilgore, instead of a sermon, gave ish the latest news from the approaching close of the meeting, and to the fact that many would, in the nature of 6things, never meet with them again. It was a solemn thought that this was the last camp meetingtosome. The Lord had been with some | of them, some had experienced the forgiveness of | sins, and some had been awakened. Calling on all professors of religion to rise, probably one- third of the congregation responded and sung ‘Oh how T love Jesus.” Then those who had | received a blessing responded to a call. Proba- bly 150 rose and sung “Oh happy every chi ” Dr. Kilgore walking out onthe me bench made an appeal to the unconve ending the Invitations of the gospel, and sev- ed themselves for prayers. kept up for some time, and | a during its progress there was A REMARKABLE SCENE. Exhortations had been made by several min- isters, and aman unknown to any in the audi- ence mounted the mourners’ bench and com- menced speaking. It was soon discovered that hew t right in his mind, and an attempt was made toninduce him to stop, but the greater | refforts the more vehemently he talked. The audience attempted to sing him down, and he finally subsided. Later in the meetin: he approached a man on one of the back seats and asked “Why not to-night give thy heart to God?” The young man answering, “Oh, not to night,” gave him asubject, and mounting the seats he comm the crowd, quoting scripture fluently. Officers A. J. Pumphrey and G. H.Gordon were called on and led him off the ground, but he continued to speak tillhe was hoarse. He was taken to the | platform and there detained while the meetings | were continued, but this episode diverted the attention of so many that it spoiled the meeting. A MYSTERIOUS CRANK. No one seemed to know him nor from whence | he came, or whither he went; indeed no one could tell whether he had just” arrived on the ground or not. In answer to a question as to his name he replied: ‘What is that to thee, follow thou me.” As to his business he | said: ~*Be it my only business h ‘To Serve the Lord with filial fear.” As to having a friend on the ground he said: “Jesus. is my friend.” While sitting at the platform with the officers he con- tinued to quote scripture and said that pray- | ers had been offered for the descent of the Holy Ghost, and when it came they did not want it. Some thought he was the advance agent of | the Salvation Army; others an escaped Junatic, and others an eccentric tramp, but his dress belied the last opi , although when the | esi about one o'clock told him he couid eave, he walked down the railroad track as if was accustomed to pedestrian practice on country roads.
