OFFICERS ELECTED, SYMPATHY FOR THE PRESIDENT, Etc. —_>—__ The Railway traveling passenger agents’ asso- ciation of the United States and Canada met in egular annual session at the Metropolitan Hotel to-day. Some communications were read from a few members in the west withdrawing their names from the roll of the organization becanse of a controversy that arose at the meeting last year in Buffalo. The dissenting members an- hounced their intention to organize a separate association; but their withdrawal did not have any damaging effect upon the old organization. ont the contrary, the efforts of the dissenters to weaken the parent association seemed to inspire the members of the latter to renewed efforts in its behalf. A number of new members were admitted to-day, and the meeting was one of the largest that the association has ever held. LIST OF THOSE PRESENT. THE SERVICES YESTERDAY. } The young people's meeting in the meeting | tent at 8 o'clock, yesterday morning, was a very interesting one. the experiences related being | short and to the point; and the singing was ex- cellent. The general experience meeting at 9 o'clock was conducted by Rey. Mr. Laselle, and was a repetition of that in the meeting tent on | a larger scale, and was continued until close up to the preaching hour. The trains brought out € great many people, and as the day woreonthe | country people came in large crowds to see the last of the meeting, that there were good | congregations at the day services; probably 600. Rev. Dr. Ward preached at the 11 o'clock ser- vice, fromJohn xvi., 33: “These things T have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace, inthe world ye shall have tribulation; ut be of good cheer, 1 have overcome the world.” His sermon was a feeling appeal to the unconverted, and was followed by an exhorta- tion by Rey. Mr. Benson. At the afternoon service Rey. J. W. Smith, ‘hington, offered the prayer, and Rey. Mr. Benson preached from Proverbs xxiii., 28: “My Son Give Me Thy Heart.” This was a’ personal appeal to the unconverted, and was listened to with marked attention and was foliowed by | prayer. * AFTER THE SERVICES, when not engaged in taking tea, the young peo- ple promenaded, watched the’ railroad trains and “creamed,” while the older ones related reminiscences of former camps, and some of the | ministers mingled their conversation on relig- ious subjects with jokes or relation of funny incidents in their career. OLD-TIME CAMPS. Some of the old campers—R. D. Woodward, John Gardner and Caleb Kelly—who r | bered the camp of 1828, were much attention. This they described as one in charge of Rey. James Sewall, when nearly one hundred people were converted. In the lan- guage of one of them “about every person tent- ing on the ground went home a changed man, woman or child.” In 1829 Rev. Mr. Peyton held | acamp of about thisty tents, and it was a very successful meeting. On leaving this camp Mr. Peyton held one near West river, and while horting ruptured a blood vessel and fell dead on the stand. Then there was an interval of twenty years before another meeting was held here, Rev. Mr. Best holding one in 1848, and Rev. Mr. Collins in the following year. These meetings were described as rather primative, the tents being filled with straw, while ditches around them carried off the rain water. After another interval of 21 years a circuit camp was held in 1870, followed by camps in whic! h the Washington pecple joined in "7i and 72. Subsequently other camps were held by the M. E. church until in 1878 the Methodist ‘otest- ants held a semi-centeunial anniversary camp church. Mr. Trout as he passed, when she replied, “Oh, I don’t like such fish.” It was apparent, as Bro. Trout was a married man, that he had already been hooked. The afternoon trains were looked for with eagerness, and while some visitors arrived some of the older campers left, and THe Star was anx- iously sought for to furnish the latest news from | the President. The meeting {n Bro. Robinson's large tent, | 45 o'clock, was attended bya crowd, which e) tended some distance from the tent, and ma gave their experiences, THE CLOSING EVENING MEETING. At 734 o'clock the tabernacle was filled, the congregation numbering over six hundred. After some preliminary remarks by Rey. Dr. Murray, Dr. Kilgore, instead of a sermon, gave an earnest exhortation, in which he referred to the. approaching close of the meeting, and to the fact that many would, in the nature of Gthings, never mect with them again. It was a solemn thought that this was the last camp meetingtosome. The Lord had been with some of them, some had experienced the forgiveness of sins, and some had been awakened. Calling on all professors of religion to rise, probably one- | third of the congregation responded and sung ‘Oh how Tiove Jesus.” Then those who had received a blessing responded to a call. Proba- bly 150 rose and sung “Oh happy every child ¢ grace.” Dr. Kilgore walking out ontie mourn- | .er's bench made an appeal to the unconverted, “extending the invitations of the gospel, and sey- eral penitents presented themselves for prayers, This meeting was kept up for some time, and during its progress there was A REMARKABLE SCENE. isters, and a man unknown to any inthe audi- ence mounted the mourners’ bench and com- menced speaking. It was soon discovered that he was not right in his mind, and an attempt was made toninduce him to stop, but the greater | their efforts the more vehemently he talked. The audience attempted to sing him down, and | he finally subsided. Later in the meeting he | approached a man on one of the back seats and | asked “Why not to-night give thy heart to God?” The young man answering “Oh, not to night.” gave hima subject, and mounting the seats he commenced to harangue | the crowd, quoting scripture fluently.
