THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON, SATURDAY. JULY 23, 1881. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent, bena fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the _other daily papers here added together. THE STAR office is connected with the Tele- phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. ——— = Persons leaving the city for the summer can have THe Stan mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as desired. The End of the Fight. ‘The New York Senatorial contest is ended at | last. The election of Mr. Lapham had been an- | ticipated, realiy, for some days, but it affords a general feeling of relief to have this disagreeable quarrel done with. The two seats in the U.S. Senate just filled by the New York were voluntarily vacated on the I¢th of by Me Conkling and Platt. These two ators had autazonized the nomination of Rob- ertson to be coll x of the port of New York. They denounced him as an enemy to the party machin the state, and insisted that he should be rejected. Finally, when it became apparent that, despite protests and appeals, Robertson would be confirmed, Conkling and Platt re- signed. This act of theirs created a genuine sensation. At first the prompt re-election of the two resigning Senators was generally counted upon. The legislature was then in session, and = fally three-fourths of the republican majority represented the machine. Platt had been elected but a few months before, and Conkling’s influence with the machine element had never been exerted in vain. The stalwarts entered the contest with entire contidence of victory; but the overwhelming sen- timent of the republic of the state condemned Conklit nd Platt, and it began to make itself heard and felt early in the fig Members of the legislature who had formerly yielded obedience | to the machine were made to realize that their constituents had a voice in the pending contest. The stalwart ranks thinned until the number ‘was finally reduced to twenty-seven, who stuck te their colors until the very last. Mr. Conkling has been a conspicuous figure in national affairs for many ye In point of ability he ranked among the highest who have occupied seats in the Se fe since close of the rebellion. In the management of party affairs he has been suc- cessful; but his imperious disposition, which Would not brook opposition, finally overthrew him. He resizned his seat because his party in the Senate would not follow him in his opposi- tion to Rob He retires from public life under circumstances that are likely to operate against his future preferment. Hisact has caused a party feud, a factional fight, which will, more or Jess, disturb republican harmony and retard success for some time to come. Much of the responsibility for disasters oriefeats which may come because of this factional fight will be vis- fted_upon Roscoe Conkling, as he was the mas- ter spirit in the movement. +o» —__ The practice of adulterating staple articles of food has increased within the past two or three Years to such an extent that a loud ll comes Up again for stringent laws and their rigid en- forcement st the fraudulent business. The ‘state of New York has enacted a law. and under it the state board of health have taken prelimi- Bary steps for the detection, exposure and pun- ishment of parties who adulterate and who sell adulterated articles of food. Under this law inspectors have been appointed to collect sam- ples of sugars, syrups, ice-cream, confections, honey, butter, cheese, wines, and in fact every- thing liable to adulteration, at random. These samples are submitted to chemists for analysis, and where aduite: is discovered legal pro- ceedings will be i uted against the manu- facturers and the sellers. One good feature of the law is that no warning is given of intention jes from any manufacturer or dealer. The inspectors have authority to select at will, and hence the fear of detection and pun- ishment will have a zoo effect. In North Carolina it has become the Principal issue in politics this year, and in Mis- sissippi a prohibition convention is in session at the state capital. This convention appears tobe respectable in character and numbers, and t object is to get a constitutional amendment pro- hibiting the liquor traific in the state, submitted to the people. tee ‘The contributions of money from the north and south towards the proposed cotton exposi- tion in Atlanta have reached a figure which assures its success.
