Surprise hag been expressed that General Grant sent but one digpatch of in- quiry about the President, and that was sent to Secretary Lincoln. The General heartog this remarked: “I have called upon Mrs. Garileld, and telegraphed my heartfelt sympathies for the President through Secretary Lincoln. More than this !s not necestary, unless the President dies, whea I will proceed to Washington.” Anotber dispatch received by Generali Grant says: “New York and Philade!pnia physicians have arrived, and, after consultation with other attending surgeons, agreed as to treatment.” Senator Conkling Summoned to El- beron. The procession was formed ready to move when it was dismissed and the apnouncement made of a religious meeting to be held at 4 p. m. Neo Celebration in Portland. PORTLAND, ME., July 4.—There is no celebra- tion in Portland to-day. ‘The city is very quiet and groups are patiently waiting for news from Washington. Anxiety in Chicago. Cutcaco, July 4,—The city is unusually quiet for the 4th of July. Many people are visiting from the country. An occasional band of music 1s heard and small boys set off fireworks around the streets; but there is no general demonstra- Uon, and a feeling of anxiety prevails, the attention of all bein concentrated upon the bulletins as they come from Washington. Silence in Jersey Citys Jersey Crry,N.J., July 4—Mayor Tausig has ordered the celebration of the day, by the Gisplay of fireworks, to be postponed, and has ordered the chief of police to stop all fring of cannon and firearms. Newport's Celebration Abandoned Newrort, R, Jwy 4.—Newport’s celepra tion, notwithstanding the arrival of visiting Iilitia, bas been postponed. Apany, N, Y., July 4.—The celebration of the national anniversary here to-day is merely formal as compared with previous Fourths. The military display was very meagre and the companies were dismissed at an early hour. Not many decorations are to be seen aud but comparailveiy few persons are on tbe sireeta. ‘The bulletin boards announcing the President's condition attract the largest crowds and seem to possess by far the greatest interest for the people. THE F N ABROAD. Sensible Views from England. Lowpon, Jaly 4.—The Manchester Giardia iemisses the idea of a political consptracy in the United States, and say American poll ticlans have not come to the point of employ. ing assassins. It seems quite sufficiently mad Out that Gulteau was nothing more or less than a isappointed office seeker, It President Garfleld dies, it will leave a gap hard to’ fill soon. As bis career was known in Europe, it was felt that the Chicago convention had made a true and wise choice. He was not one of those sor- did manager place-hunters, who are the oppro- brium of American politics. He was the right man to fight the batue with them. Itis hardly likely that when the time comes for another Mammoth republican caucus, so doubtful a Soil will throw up yet another man of similar integrity and proved capacity. It is curious that the abuse, which of all others needs re- forming in America, should be indirectly re- sponsibie for the present crime. By reformin: the system of patronage, the Americans will best show their sorrow for Mr. Garfleld’s death, or their thankfumess for his recovery. It is not to be eupvosed that a perfectly sane Inan would sttempt such a crime, but the Pres- ident’s position in regard to patronage is so favidious, that it is only wonderful such an attempt has never been made before.” ‘The Assassination Commented On in English Churches. Lonpon, July 4.—At the close of the ser- Mhon at the City Temple (Congregational) Sun- Gay morning, the Rev. Dr. Parker read the fol- lowing: ‘Resolved that this congregation. rep- resenting every shade of religtous and political Opinion, has heard with tnexpressible horror of the attempt to assassinate the President of the United States, and most profoundly sympa- thizes with the Americans 12 the hour of na- tonal consternation end distress.” Dr. Parker then asked the congregation If they approved e resolution to rise. ‘The congregation tmenc- Gately rose en ase. Great sympathy is expressed for bim and his family, and the hotels and offices of the newspapers and of ‘Consul Wasson are by anxious in- quirers for the latest bulletins. Condemnation of the Crime in Rome Roms, July 4.—The Liverta characterizes the attempt on President Gartield’s life as an act of barbarous and foolish vengeance, which is rendered the more infamous In view of the no- ble character aud perfect uprightness of the victim. Romer, July 4—The Rvorma says itis asad and short-sighted deed. ‘The Dirito, after expressing deep regret and sympathy, points out that such acts must be regarded as inde; it of the form of govern- Ment, since similar attempts have been made within four months a =. sover- —- & popular repubitcan President. it e Opinione expresses regret, but says that since, in the event of mts death, & fresh election , the political be affected. But it is obvious that such a disarmament is needed.” THE VICE PRESIDENT'S NATIVITY. The Mai? adds further "The position} of Vice President Arthur, in the event of a va- cancy in the Presidency, woulda bea singular one. A thing worthy of comment fs the fact that people of all parties are earnest In thelr expressions of sympathy. Special prayers tor the recovery ot the President were offered yesterday in all the churches here. At about 7 o'clock Saturday bight news came, which seemed to be authen- Uc, that the President was dead. The following is an extract from a letter dated March 30, 1573, from the fatuer of the ag sassin to John W. Guiteau, his brother, in Bos- ton, In which he refers to Charlies, as follows: “T have been ready to belleve him capabie of almost ay folly, stupidity or rascality. The one possible excuse I can render for him 1s that he is insane. Indeed, if I was called as witness upon the stand I am inclined to think I should testify that he {is absolutely insane. and Is hardly responsible for his acts. My own impression 1s that unless something shall stop him in his folly and mad career be wil become hopelessly insane and fit subject for the lunatic asylum. Be- fore I Keen i him up I had exhausted af! my powers of reason and persuasion, as well as other resources, in endeavoring to contro) hisactions and thoughts, but without avatl. I found him deceitful and could not be depended upon in anything; stubborn, willful, conceited, and at all times outrageously wicked, appar- ently possessed of the devil. I saw him once or twice when it seemed to me he was willing to do almost anything wicked he should nares to take a fancy to. You will remember pS at the last conversation we had about him I told you to keep clear of him and not have anything to do with him. Should anybody ask about him now I should be compelled to say to them that I thought he was insane, or at least a mono- maniac, and shoul@ there leave {t and say no more about him. His insanity is of such a character that he ts as likely to become a sly cunning desperado as anything. Could I see him I might possibly make another and stgor- ous effort to Change the whole channel o! his thoughts and feelings, If I could not do that I should have no por whatever of ss, able to do bim apy made up my mind long ago never to give him another dollar tn money until i should be convinced he was thoroughly bumbied and radically changed. I am some- Umes afraid he would steal, rob or do anyihing before his egottsm and self-conceit shall be Knocked out of him, and perhaps even all that wil not doit. So you see, I regard his case as rom my mind and leave him entirely tu the hands of his Maker, with avery taint hope taat he cin be changed elther in this world or the nest.” Gautier’s Idiosyncracies, HIS QUEER CONDUCT WHEN A MEMBER OF THE ONEIDA COMMUNITY. Mr. Francis Wayland Smith, of the Onelda community, gives the following interesting statement regarding Guiteau’s conduct when a member of that community: “ He was extremely erratic and his egotism Was 50 great that it was really a phaseof in- Sanity. His mind was disordered continually with hobbies of alisorts and descriptions, for {nstance, when here he was a member of our debating society. In his style of debate he was original always, or tried to be. When his turn came to speak he would rise and say, ‘As the honorable gentleman has brought ‘nothing Worthy of rebuttal he has nothing to rebut.’ Another characteristic was this. Ia directing packages he would write ‘C. O. D.,’and then “OD delivery’ right after the letters. Once in alecture he prepared for our evening exercises he had written in these words in the manu- seript: ‘If the audience will now excuse me 1 Will take off my coat.’ He used to work now and then in our trap factory; he marked the ad for shipping in large, beautiful round letters. One of his many idiosyncrasies was to mark a large card with this inseription: CHARLES. J. GUITEAU, Premier of England, Will deliver a lecture in ST. JAMES’ HALL, LONDO! “This he kept fastened to the wall before him. He imagined himself some great dizat- tary or other all the time. Fame and weaithy stations filled his thoughts by day and night.” THE STRUGGLE AT ALBANY. It Sull Goes On—The Balloting To- day.
