DOORS CLOSED TO-DAY—SIGNS OF SMOKE THOUGH—WHERE IS DORSEY?—HAS HE REALLY AND TRULY GONE WEST?—DAMAGING BVI- DEXCE. Matters were quiet in the Post Office depart- ment to-day, although rumors of removals flow thick and fast. Over in room 59, where the in- yestigating committee holds Its sessions, the doors were closed, although there was evidence that something was going on within. As on yesterday, Postmaster General James sald to- day, there will be no immediate removals. Up to 2 o'clock Sixth Auditor McGrew had not teen relieved. He was at Bis office, as well a3 tus Deputy Auditor Lily, The rumor has been that the Attorney General has evidence of a nature to compromise McGrew, and that after ite receipt, the President decided to act ina summary.manner. McGrew insists that he has done nothing wrong; that he audited the ac- without having acceas to the books of the latter he could not know even if fraudulent Contracts were certified to him. 8 TO DORSEY, it {8 said that though he maintains his flesh he is dreadfully nervous. It has been announced that the ex-Senator has gone to live on his cattle ranch in New Mexico. Itis ena pe he has left this city, but there are a who believe that he has not headed tor nis cattle ranch, DAMAGING TESTIMONY. All of the data so far obtained upon which the government will base its prosecution is now in the hands of Special Assistant Attor- uy General William A. Cook. Itis sald to be of most damaging nature, clearly proves a conspiracy and involves over twenty individ- uale. It is claimed that 89 far as Dorsey Is con- cerned evidence has been furnished against him by those with whom he had dealings and with whom he fatled to act square. Although the ex-Senator has secured the originals of the letters and telegrams recently published, show- ing how petitions for “expediting” routes were made up in the far west, it 1s belleved the At- torney General has to-day certified copies, which will be used against him. Other evi- dence, which It is alleged isin the possession of the Attorney General, 1s the notes given for = purchase Of a weekly newspaper in this ty. It 1s stated that the article recently pub- lished in a New York pepe involving Secr2- tary Blaine was furnished by members of the star route ring. The Attorney General, it is said, knows by whom it was furnished, and it will make a peculiar history of the star route fraud when iC is made pubite, UNDER SUSPICION, BUT NOT PROVEN GUILTY. While the Postmaster General is conscious that there are to-day clerks employed in the contract office, who are under the ban of very strong spspicion, he will make no removais until he is absolutely satistied of their guilty knowledge of the fraud, Gen. James {3 an in- teneely honest man, and while he will shrink from ho public duty, he wilt not smirch the the character of any individual, however humble, until be bas proofs of gullt. Trial of the Star BRouute Conspira- tors. WHEN IT WILL TAKE PLACE. There is but little doubt that the statement in THE STaR of yesterday, as to the star route cases not reaching the grand jury until Sep- tember, is correct. The new term of the court (Judge Cox) will convene on Monday, June 20th Inst., and the jurors, therefore, will be drawn about the sth or 10th inst. The present grand jury will probably close their business about ‘the same time, ao far as the examina- Vion of witnesses 1s concerned, for they must allow some few days in which to prepare the indictments. Thus, it will be seen, That if the testimony was ready to be presented, this grand jury would not have tke time to devote fo it. It is unusual for the grand jury to enter on their duties on te first day of the term and the jury to drawn and summoned to appear Gn the 20th inst, will not likely get jy under way before the 25th. Judge Cox, who will hold the June term, contemplates going to Narragansett Pier ‘about the 6ch of uly. Chief Justice Cartter leaves to-morrow for Kansas, Judge McArthur will go to Sara- toga early in Juiy and afterwards to Mex'co, and Judge James to Connecticut aout the seme time, thus leaving as two judges here in July, Judge Wylie and Judge Hagner, and one of these willhold the qactey Court, and tt ts likely the Criminal Court will be adjourned over July and Aus as the cases will be preeae in the shape of charges of conspiracy, they will necessarily be rather Intricate, and it would not be expedient to commence the examination and then adjoura it over weeks, WHO THE LIGHTNING WILL STRIKE. There 1s considerable conjecture about the court-house as to who will be presented. Among those mentioned in in conneotion with the in- dictments are id Assistant Postmaster General Brady, “om “Chet Clerk Erendl ex-Sen- ator S. W. Dorsey, 5. B. THE ALBANY DEAD-LOCK. LITTLE CHANGE IN THE VOTING, —_+—_—_ THE CORNELL AND DEPEW COMBINATION MAKE NO HEADWAY, VIRGINIA’SREADJUSTER CONVENTION Mahone and Riddleberger Withdraw, ——_~——_— THE CONTEST AT ALBANY. A Movement to Combine Gove Cornell for Senator—Thus far He Refuses— Conkling and Platt in New York—If Cornell Accepts the Proposed Coalition an Election Probable—Otherwise, it is Far off —Interesting Gossip, Etc. [Special Dispatch to the Evening Star.) ALBany. N. Y., June 3.—The entire atten- tion of all the factions in the senatorial con. test 1s now turned to the movement to com- bine the half-breed admintatration vote with Gov, Cornell’s faction of the stalwarts, and the efféctual union of their interests will break the dead-lock and elect Cornell and Depew U. 8. Senators. Upto this time Gov. Cornell has refused to assent to becoming a party to such an alllance, but as matters are now drifting it geems inevitable that ne will be ultimately drawn im. This, however, depends on the abliity of the administration side to combine all the votes which have not been cast for Mr. Conkling upon one of their candidates, as an associate with Mr. Cornell Mr. Depew is tue strongest of the half-breeds, but there are Teasons why a combination on him {3 and yet no other one named appears to furnish as eer ita t of union as Mr. Depew. All admit i it will be im- possible to break the dead lock except by lakipg & person identified with the stalwarts heretofore, and Gov. Cornell ts the only one of that class that promises sufficient strength to make a combination a success. The friends of Gov. Cornell are among the strongest workers for Mr. Conkling, and if he can be induced to enter the contest it will withdraw much of the strongest svpport that Mr. Conkling has. The stalwarts fear that alliance more than any other that can be made. They are positive In their declarations that the Governor will not enter into or be @ party to any such arrange- ment; but their actions sbow that they fear he will be a party to tt. Ex-Senators Conkling ana Platt have both gone to New York on business, and are pot to return till Monday. Vice Presi- dent Arthur, Commissioner French and all the other lieutenants remain to look after the can- vass in the absence of thelr chief. The move of the Conkling men for a legislative recess has fafled to-day in the Senate, and an effort is to ve made to adjourn the House fro1 today until Monday morning without the consent of Senate. Further efforts are to be made In the balloting to-day to run Depew and Cornell's vote up as another step toward securing a combination on there two names. The friends of Piatt fear that be will lose some of his votes on account of that effort. Stories are in circulation this morning among the half breeds that Gov. Cor- nell is ready to be a candidate against Platt, and that a preach has taken place between them. The stalwarts positively deny it. As affairs are now running Gov. Cornell will have to say before many days whether he will or will not be a party to a combination against Conkling. Ifhesays he will, an election of Senators will take place by the middle of nex: week, but if his decision 1s positive the otuer way, Ube end 1s far off. [Second Dispatch. In the ballot to-day Conkling g@ined one and Platt two votes. The vote for Cornell fell off for the short term and Depew remained the same for the long term as yesterday, showing that the combination of Depew and Corneil has made no headway. The half stalwarts woo bad been voting for Cornell left him for Lap bsm, while for the long term Congressman Warter Miller recetved the votes of some who bad been voting for Cornell and the scattering vote, making nim 10, Both the Depew and Cornell combination have apparently recetved acheck today.
