ASHINGTON Net ‘The sttention of ns having use for Tele- FOR RENT AND SALE. _FOR RENT AND SALE. THE EVENING STAR. TELEPHONE CARD. ee WANTS WANTS—MISCELLANEOUS. W: 70 Ww. THURSDAY..............JUNE 2, 1881. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- nent.bonn fide dally circulntion more th: treble that of any other daily paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added togeth Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘Tae Stak mailed to them. postpaid, for fifty cents per month, snd the address changed as often as desired. To Advertisers—The Double Sheet. Tus Stak printed during the month of May ‘2,392 new advertisements, being the largest number ever printed in one month in the his- tory of the paper. The increase for the five months of ‘31 over the corresponding psriod of last year already exceeds 609, that of May alone being 284. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in thetr orders early for next | Saturday's ealarged edition in order to secure Esertion and elassification. The Situation at Albany. ‘Three days’ balloting at Albany confirms the defeat of Conkling and Piatt. With the em- ployment of every power of the machine and the tacit endorsement of the governor, Conk- Img commands considerably less than half the requisite number of votes to elect. Instead of gathering strength, ne barely holds nis own, while Platt made such a lame start In the race that he ts not counted among the possibilities. Everything now depends upon the ability o;¢ the admipistratton!sts to concentrate upon two Candidates. Herein lies their greatest dimculty and Conkling’s only hope. He, apparently, in- tends to hold his vote together, In the belief that It will be increased through the disap- pointment of candidates now being voted for by the administrationists; that rivalries and jealoucies will arise among the candidates on the other side, which will result tn driving votes over to Conkling for combinations. Mr. Conkling’s telegram to Senator Mahone, endorsing the latter and his policy, looks as if the ex-Senator had aban- doned ail idea of any coalition with the demo- crats. The events of several months past have made It clear that nobody can hope for dem- Ocratic ald who endorses or helps Mahone. That ts the unpardonable sin in democratic estimation. To be elected by democratic yotes would be, in effect, a defeat of the very purpose Mr. Conkling had in view in going before the legislature for vindication; but, Stull, It has been thought he would prefer an election by this means rather*than not get back to the Senate at all. For more than a Week past it has been evident that his only hope of election rested upon democratic ald. it fs not very likely now that he could get such ald, even should he want it. ‘The Virginia readjusters’ state convention, which assembled in Richmond tc-day, 1s largely attended, the full complement of delegates being present. The party leaders are ail pret ent and the competition for the nomination for governor indicates a hopeful feeling among the men who ought to b2well posted about State politics. Politicians do not strive for the leadership of a forlorn hope, The fate of the readjuster ticket depends upon the courss of the republican voters. Their support, if given with any sort of unity, will probably decide the contest tn favor of the readjusters; but at present the mass of republicans appear to be undecided, and they will wait for a regular party convention to determine the best policy. ‘The readjusters will have the field to them- selves for the next two months. The cam- paign will not assume any definite shape be- fore the middle of August, but it will be lively from that tmeon. There will probably be a republican convention held, a3 the most prom- inent leaders of that party are not willing to see the organization broken up. Even should the general republican sentiment favor sup- Port of Mahone, a convention will, no doubt, be called; to give the matter consideration in an organized capacity. While the republicans of New York are “having It out” the, democratic bretheren are not dwelling together In unity, by any means. The Brooklyn Eagle intimates that the demo- cratic members of the lezislature, tn nominat- ing Kernan and Jacobs, a3 candidates for the U.S Senate, have “sold out their party te the administration faction.” The state constitu- tion prohibits any members of the legislature from being being chosen U.S. Senator, and Provides that all votes given for any member shall be void. Should the admintstrationista concentrate their seventy-two votes upon one candidate it might be clatmed as an election, on the ground that the fifty-four democratic votes cast for Jacobs /a state senator) are void. ‘The selection of Willtam A. Cook, concededly at the head of the criminal bar of the District, as special assistant attorney general to take charge of the star route investigation, shows that the government means business in the prosecution of these cases. —_—_—_—_— ISIT WARM?
