THE EVENING STAR. \ espesepecnaecies = FRIDAY May 27, 1881. CROSBY &. NOVES......Editore Sees The Evening Star has a regular, perma- nent.bona fide daily circulation more than other dally paper pub- THE Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exchange Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail ard otherwise, news, or any information or business cen be sent dsy or night, free of charge. Persons leaving the city for the summer can heve ‘THE Stax msi'ed tothem. postpaid, for Afty cents per month, and the address changed ss often as desired. The Deuble Sheet—To Advertisers. Owing to the large taerease in advertising and circulation of the enlarged edition of Taz ‘Stam on Saturday, advertisers are earnestly requested to send in thelr orders early to in- sure insertion and proper classification. The number of new advertisements printed in May 18 already 2,054. The New York Complication. The attempt of the New York stalwarts at Albany to force a caucus last night résulted in Mat fatiure. The declaration of Mr. Conkling’s adherents that the caucus was simply post- poned until yext Monday night does not de- celve anybody. The postponement was a mat- ter of necessity. Nothing has yet occurred Which so clearly demonstrates the loss of Conk- Iing’s power and influence. Even the members Of the legislature who have been regarded as Conkitng’s servants, refuse to recognize his authority any longer. Members who have hitherto been as subservient to the machine as ifthey were its property, now openly admit ‘that they dare not fly in the face of their con- stituents by voting for Conkling and Platt. What Mr. Cenkling will do, now that he finds it impossible to secure his re-election, becomes an interesting question. He will most likely employ the same tactics he used so recently in the Senate in connection with the Revertson case; he will plan for delay. A prominent republican who has been in New York for several days past is authority for the Statement that the Conklingites will endeavor to prevent an election of Senators at present. ‘Their probable policy will be to have the legis- lature take a recess until December, with the view of permitting republican sentiment, as expressed at the polls in November, to decide between the two factions. It will be claimed in behalr of this plan that it con- templates the election of Senators by the present republican legislature; that at present itis impossible to deMe how the majority of ‘ans of the state feel in regard to ; that the county conventions for the nomination of members of the next iegis- lature and other officers can settle this question by adopting resolutions expressing the majority Sentiment of the counties, respectively; and that, after the election, the now-existing lezis- lature can meet and decldethe senatorial contest in accordance with the will of the party. Mr. Conkling would make good use of the time afforded by the adoption of this pian. He would immediately repair and strengthen the machine, and all its appliances would be broughi to bear upon the county conventions. The situation at Albany now points unmistaka- bly to a dead-lock. The balloting will open With a triangular fight, and will, no doub:, continue in that shape forsome time,- if the legislature remains long in session. Then, t2 Avoid the warm work necessary in a politica! contest during the summer months, it is quite likely that a recess will be taken. In such event Mr. Conkling will attempt to make hay while the sun shines. But meantime, it may be as- sumed, lis Opponents will not be Idle. ——____o-____ The failure and withdrawal of the line of Steamers running from thiscountry to Brazil may be and doubtless is a bad thing for {ta pro. Jectors; it 1s also unfortunate for American Merchants and manufacturers, bat it ts in- Hunltely worse for the people of Brazil them- Selves. The owners of the ine probably lost Some money in pushing their enterprise, bat they still have their vessels, for which there 1s goed demand. American business men who wish to go or ship anything to Brazil by steam must now do so by way of London,—a long and expensive way round. The Brazilians, how- ever, bave {ost all chances of a choice of mar- Kets to buy and sellin, and find their foreign Commerce in the hands of a few men whose sole interest it 1s to make Brazil entirely de Pendant upon European countries in commer Cial and financial matters. It would have been the part of wisdom in Dom Pedro to have pre- Vented this at almost any expense to the Bra- zilian treasury, whether the United States gov- ernment would subsidise the line or not. —_—>-—__ Queen Victoria, who was sixty-two years of age last Tuesday, will have occupied the throne of Great Britain forty-four years on the 20th of next month. Within that period she has seen dynasties rise and fall, monarchies upsst and Tepublics established, but coatinued and in- creasing prosperity hag been the lot of her own government. It is true the Queea has had bat ttle Influence In extending the power and fame of Great Britain. Her exalted position is one more of dignity than ruling power; bat ‘She has been safe, conservative and womanly in the use of such power as she posses3ad. She ‘bas the respect of all the world, and wishes for her continued health are tniversal. —_-o-____ Ohio has for years past enjoyed pretty much all the political glory tn “off years,” but she takes a back seat this year. New York, with her senatorial struggle, attracts general in- terest just now, and after awhile the Virginia campaign will occupy the public mind. It must humiliate the Ohio people to find out that the government ts not really depending upon the result of one of their local elections. ———______ DOUGLASS, Sr. CLovp Burupmd.
