[ALL DRAWIN jE TAUGHT IN THE = UBLIC WouooLs The Pen and Peucil the Inastrn- ments of fiuman Progress—The Washington Hi School of the Futare. Gen. Is it possible that the youth wao bave drawn from memory so many of the maps upon these walls will ever forget the bays, rivers, cities aad boundaries they have outiined so weli? Most men, in seeing, see not, Toey pass a noble edifice, but can not tell fs height, ploportion, material or arebttecture; they (traverse a park, but the drives and walks are (0 them a labyrinthine maze; they look upon a machine, but the polished wheels, the po vertu! To the draughtsman, however, trained to exact sindy of Geraiis, the ¢ditice tells its tale of loate or Corinthian or Gothic harmony; the park reveals {ts varled beauty of landscape; and the bright wachinery ceases to be complex and moves under law; every cog and pinton has its use and the quick-flasbing wheel has the diameter ro. quires for tue force needed, and no more, 7) draughtsman {3 tue close observer. ie nat. the broken lines of the mountatn ridge, the trend of the shore, the slope of the hill, tne sort curves of woman's form, the rugged drapery of the ifon’s neck, the rounded keel of tue sly. ADVANCE IN MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE, in my time—and Ican look back over more than a half century, the half century of the grandest achievements of the human race, par- ticularly. ta the United States—there has beona wonderful improvement in the accuracy and extent of mechanical knowledge, I can re- member when there were neither ratlroads nor telegraphs, when there were, trom the Penob- Scot to the Sabine, fgw tallors who could ft a coat, few coach-makers who could turn out 4 light and strong carriage, tew cabinet-makers who could construct a sideboard, and few bufiders who could put up a durabie, flre-proof publfe bulici g. Drawing was then regarded as @D accomp)isbment for misses and artists, with which mechanics had naught to do. ‘These were expected to get through their work by main strength and awkwardness, Now there are draughtsmen !n every d>pars~ ment of the goverpment; not only in the Lind Ortice, the Coast and Topographical Surveys, the Bureau of Engraving and the Bureau 4 cclure, Dut in the machine shops, nivy yards and arsenals They are also necessary adjuncts tnevery branch of tnduastriat life. They iurnish varying and tasteful designs to the calico printer, Carpet weaver and ‘wall- paper manufacturer. They are the confiden- Ual advisers of the upholsterer, cabinet maker and tailor. They dictate the pattern of car- Tiages and stoves, paint our plates, shape our vases and fashion cur book-binding3, In house- bulldipg the draughtsman ha3 changed h's name to architect and has become the master of the contractor. In bridge and ratlroad bullding be has cl and his word is law to the workmen. [n him the mechanic has become man of sclence and gentleman. Some ten years ago A PRACTICAL SYSTEM FOR TEACHING DRAWING in the public schools was devised by Walter Smith, of Boston. By its methoa we are preparing: thousends of young people to benefit by the higher instruction in igdus rial Gesign, s00n, We ho} be established here by the trustees of the Corcoran Art Gallery.
