Paige lectured af the THE Academy of Music last evening on “Perihelia,” the period when the planets are in position nearest the sun. Eloven ladies and thirty-two gentle- men listened to his grand aggregation of compiled statistics. He said noth- ing new, except a. few extraordinary discoveries of his own. For inatance, 18 said the world was approaching de- struction at the rate of a second every two weeks, and he had made a fine chlculation snd discovered that the and bust up would take plade in ut 35,000,000 years, but he added hat there was no doubt that the earth would kick the bucket five or ten millions of years before that date. The lecturer didn’t seem to mind any such little period as the difference be- tween five and ten million years. The andience seemed to consider that they would beall white-haired and bent be- fore that period came, and they wouldn't have much more use for the world then, anyhow. He expected that before many million years the moon would have to go out of busi- ness, when it would form a gigantic cirele of cobble stones about the earth. Tt is to be hoped the paving of our streets will not be postponed until then. Mr. Paige said thirty days from 8 o'clock yesterday morning, all the planiets would be on a line with the sun, with the earth at the tail end of the cart, the others all tugging at it. 00000 SORTHWESTERN NATIONAL, Sopial FIREMEN'S FUND, Califonis. e I)l),wu J. @ RUSSELL, M.
