C; Which extension the directors at thelr meet- Ing Saturday decided to make. The immediate Objective is Spartanburg, with a branch to Charlotte, but- the ultimate terminus will be Atlanta, Georgia, This line will, it is expected, not only take the place of the unfloished Valley rallroad, but will give Baltimore a through route to the south that wil enable that city to defy the competition of New York and Philadelphia equally with that of Norfolk, Richmond, Cin- cipnatt and Louisville, and will bring no end of grist to the commercial mill of Baltimore by tapping the great cotton and tobacco regions of the south. The Baltimore and Ohio ratlroad company are expected to furnish a proper pro- Portion of the money for the extension of the road. ——_ ore —___. ‘The New York Heratd presents figures show- ing an alarming increase of mortality in that city, which increase, it maintains, Is chiefly due to the flithy condition of the streets. The death rateof the city for the first three months of 1890 Was 6,502; for the first three months of 1351 At was 9,105, an increase of 2,303. These figures Will, Do doubt, stir the peoric of that politicfan- ridden city to an assertion ot thelr power. The question of street-cleaning has now become one of protecting the citizea’s family from disease and death. The contest between Jobn Kelly and his op- ponents for supremacy in Tammany hall and future control of its political power takes place to-night, and from all indications tt will be an exciting one. The society has about [,300 mem- bers, but nearly halt of them are non-residents of the city, and the estimate is that about six hundred votes will be cast to night. ‘The anti- Kelly men estimate the boss’ vote at 250, but of course Kelly claims more than this, The op- Position ase vigorous and aggressive, and it will not be suprising if they succeed in de- posing Kelly, whose iron rule has made him many enemies, and who 's now deprived of the power to reward bis supporters with office. ee in Kentueky recently the father of a family Offered a reward of $50 for the arrest of a son who had forged the paternal name. Another son, with a keen eye to business, enticed the erring brother within bis reach and captured him, Whether the father patd the reward in cash, or gave his note, does not appear, but tt «Is evident that the family is a thrifty one. Recent municipal elections in South Carolina develop the fact that politics no longer influ- ence local questions In that state. In many of the towns the voters divided upon the ques- Uon of “license” or “no license,”—the former being In favor of granting saloon licenses and the latter agaipst it. In other towns white and Colored citizens divided on matters affectlag the localities respectively, and in some cases Citizens tickets, compoged of men of both races, Were elected. Hitherto politics have ruled in all the ciections of that state, and the new departure foreshadows a breaking away from party lines. A state treasurer ts to be elected in Penn- sylvania this year, but very little interest is manifested in the even’, even in that state. It isa singular and expensive policy which sepa- rates astngie state officer from all the others and elects him in ap off-year. The election costs a5 much as if an entire state ticket had to be chosen. It ig true this plan may help to keep the political pot boiling, but the indica- tions sre that the people of Pennsylvania are not going to march to the music of the poliu- cians this year. _—_——_—_—_——— AM NOW PREPABED TO FUBNISH Esti & FOR HEATING HOUSES WITH FURNACES OB HEATER AND FIRST- CLASS BANGES FOR COOKING, WITH ESTI- MATES FOR PLUMBING.
