I ‘The New Church Movementin South Washington. AN ORGANIZATION EFFECTED. Last evenlng an adjourned meeting of the congregation formed in South Wasbington of the withdrawing members of Ryland M. E. Church on the 6th instant was held at the resi- dence of Mrs.'T. E. Lloyd, Mr. S. P. Keller in the chair and Mr. H. L. Rose'seeretary. There was a very fair attendance. and the situation was discussed at some length, the decision being reached that the soclety should be Metnodist in dcetrine, but free from the rules in regard to church government, An organization was ef- fected by electing the following: Trustees, Messrs. Wiillam Worrell, J. K. Sharp, W. J. Murtagh, J. H. Mitenell and A. C, Irwine; stew- ards, H. 1. Rose, R. F. Downs, Thomas Tucker, S- P. Keller and Ira Croson; recording steward, S. P. Keller; financial steward, H. L. Rose; su- perintendent of the Sunday school, W. J. Mur- lagh. The class leaders are Mrs. E‘chberger, (Tuesday afternoon); Mr. Mithell, (Sun: day afternoon); Mr. Keller, (Friday evening). The meubers State that they take this step onmaccount of the arbitrary action ef the presiding elder and bishops under the laws of the church, which are entirely inconsistent with the gentus of American institutions. They do not recogni the ngcessity for a code of laws fora cau (the them bers of which are enjoined to observe the laws of the country tn which they live) of a more arbitrary character than the laws of the land. Although many of them feel that in taking this action they are severing their con- nection with their own home they state that they cannot under existing circumstances with self-respect return to the fold of Ryland. They recite briefly that after the appointment of the present pastor cf Ryland an appeal was made to the church authorities (Presiding Elder Brown and Bishop Simpson—the latter directing Bishop Andrews to act for him) and tuat while it was admitted that they had been ubfairly treated, every reasonable concession made by them was repudiated. In short, that they found that the lalty oy whom the church had been erected and supported had no rights, which presiding elders and bishops were bound to respect, and the privilege only was left them of supporting whatever minister was seat them, they having no choice whatever in the selection.
