THE EVENING STAR. MONDAY...... January 17, 1881, Another Opinien on the Liquer Question. Mr, Eattor: A380 many talented men have spoken on this vexed question, perhaps you will find room, for an opinion from a plain, matter-of-fact citizen. I ubink the whole busi- hess of licensing people to sell liquor 1s wrong. It is my opinion that the trafic snould be free to everybody, as much so a3 the trade in pota- toes, colton or real estate, I do not believe in sumptuary laws. I think It unjust to legtslate what a man shall eat or drink. The mero fact that the United States exacts duty on tmporred liquor makes 1t a legitimate article of com- merce, and any one who likes should bave a right to buy or sell freely, untrammeted by any state or city law. If Congress. 1a tts profound Wisdom. would @ law forbidding tts 1m- portation tonto or manufacture in the United States, that indeed would be yolng to the root of the matter, avd 1 would glaily see 1t done. I can’t conceive of any otber liquor lay that I would sanction or support. Ajthough T have arrived at the age of three-score, I do Rot aud hever have used liquor or tobacco of any kind. But excuse me from telling my neighbor, “You shall do as I do.” Trmoray. The World’s Fair. The mountains surrounding the mining town of Aita are steep, aud the trees have been cut off. The tramway sheds of tho Wahsatch and Jordan Valley railroad have been swept away in several places for five miles below Alta, rendering ingress or e; nost impossible. ‘Two weeks ago a snow de carried away & man named Darley. ‘The storm increased in fury with the opening of last week. Op Wedueseay night the snow tell in sheets and the wind became a hurricans, About 10 o’clock a snow slide carried away the Flagstaff orehouse and four hundred feet of the railroad sheds, and swept across the flat and the creek to the opposite mountain. Later another slide pagged over the Victorlo and Imperial pa urying two men, who dug their way cut in ten hours. Continuing, ft swept away the Grizzly boarding-house. in which were Mrs. Jonathan Hoskins and four ebildren, Charles Symons, Robert Howath and Evan Morris. Of and her daughter, Jane Howath, and Morris were killed. Another slide smashed and | buried the Toledo works and boarding-house, | kiliing Charles Barbridge and Frank Laporte. On Thursday and Friday work w topped at the principat inines, and many of the ten left the canyon for the valley. The storm continned, and increased in fury, the wind blowing a gale and piling the snow just over the crest of the ‘bill Dorti of Alta, on the Alta side. The great weight started another slide half a mtle wide on Friday night, which would have completely demolished Alta but that 1° was split and par- Ually diverted by a flat area juat above the head ofMMain street. Itstruck a large and heavily-built stone store, in which five men had gathered for safety. Two of them, who were sleeping in the second story, were thrown out, but were com- ey unhurt. Three had taken refuga in ‘he basement and built a fire, namely, Joun Fitzgerald, P. B. Lee and William Hollogs- head. The house was crushed in on them aad fred from the stove, and they _per- ished. Richard Willlams*¥and John Wash- ington, who remained to look after the Joab Lawrence property, with instructions to sleep im the tunnel, are missing. The avalancho swept away every building owned by the Joab Lawrence company, together with their tram- Way, inflicting a loss of $20,000. It burned the Buffalo house, but three men had retired into a tunnel and were rescued exhausted. Fifty peo- le came down last night, leaving about 20 who for various reasons could not getaway. The tip down was fearful. Leaving their homes with nothing but the clothes ou their backs, the women wallowed through the snow as best they could, the men carrying th2 children. ‘There remains e.ough mountain stope still un- denuded to complete the destruction of the town, and it may slide at any moment. Eight mnlles of the up Big Cottonwood are satd to be one huge silde, covering everything. A big slide in Mayfield guich has blocked the creek for 400 yards and made quite a lake, While there is no loss of life yet reported from the Big Cottonwood, the miners are leaving the canyon es fast as ible. When the snow becomes deep and heavy on the steep moun- tain slopes an avalanche may be started by a party oe their face or by a concus— ae Sometimes a Qjast far under ground will 0 It.
