That sum in round numbers represents a dividend of 5 per cent on a capital stock of $120,000.00, whereas the actual paid up and really invest-d capital of the concern Is not the tweifth part of that | sum, or less than $10,000,000. Upon this invested amount the net earnings of the company for the year ‘S80 afford a profit or div.dend of 60 percent! This result was achieved, as stated abeve, in the face of vigorous competition and with the low rates that invariably come with opposition. The capital stock of the new con- solidation Is fixed, for conventeuce of arrange- ment and calculation, at $30,000,009, although the actual paid up and invested capital of all the compantes constituting it, Is less thar one- fifth of that vast sum, or about $15,009,000. It is upon the former amount, however, that divi- gends are to be declared. and the a'm will un- douptedly be to earn enough clear to pay a divi- dend of ten per cent on that sum or $5,000,000 per year, which ts a little over 50 per cent profit on the trae capital. The public may, therefore, confidently lock for an early “readjustment of rates,” as tbe process of a fresh bieeding the vietims of & monopoly is now called.
