THE EVENING STAR._ | Mt | DAY 7, 1S8t. jitore CROSBY S. NOYVES.... The Evening Star tas a reaular, perma- A. 8S. FLANDRAU & ©0., nent. bona fide daily circulation more than of any other daily pnper pub- ished In Washingto equal tothat ef all the other daily papers here added te- gether. ‘THE Sraz office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the psper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or Dusiness can be sent day or night, free of charge. posters coe Rabin According to the showing of Its own officers, the net earnings of the Western Unioa Tele- graph Company last year, in spite of the sharp Competition to which {t was subjected at the hands of the new American Union Company, | were @ trifle under $6,000,000. That sum in round numbers represents a dividend of 5 per cent on a capital stock of $120,000.00, whereas the actual paid up and really invest-d capital of the concern Is not the tweifth part of that | sum, or less than $10,000,000. Upon this invested amount the net earnings of the company for the year ‘S80 afford a profit or div.dend of 60 percent! This result was achieved, as stated abeve, in the face of vigorous competition and with the low rates that invariably come with opposition. The capital stock of the new con- solidation Is fixed, for conventeuce of arrange- ment and calculation, at $30,000,009, although the actual paid up and invested capital of all the compantes constituting it, Is less thar one- fifth of that vast sum, or about $15,009,000. It is upon the former amount, however, that divi- gends are to be declared. and the a'm will un- douptedly be to earn enough clear to pay a divi- dend of ten per cent on that sum or $5,000,000 per year, which ts a little over 50 per cent profit on the trae capital. The public may, therefore, confidently lock for an early “readjustment of rates,” as tbe process of a fresh bieeding the vietims of & monopoly is now called. This “re- adjustment” will doubtless consist, as hereto- fore, of an increase in the prices of telegraphing of from 19 to 50 per cent, according to the known inability of different localities to help themselves. a Some of the favored few in England have what iscalleda “very soft thing” in this country, In 1676, Charles Tl. granted to the Duke of Ricbmond and his heirs 13. per chaldron on all coal exported from the river Tyne aad con- sumed in Eogland. Thisduty was received by the Dukes of Richmond until 1799, wnen it was exchanged for £19,000 per annum, which sum Is yet drawn every year by their descendant, the present Duke of that name. Another like case ts that of the present Duke of Grafton, to whose ancestor and his heirsthe same kine granted the right of butlerage of wines throughout Engiand. butlerage being the king’s right of “taking to bis own use, and at his own valuation, 83 much of all merchandise belonging to merchant strangers out of every ship importing the same as he had occasion for.” In is6, the then Duke of Grafton gur- rendered this right for a perpetual annuity of £6,570 and this sum is still paid regularly every year. Not unoaturally some of the English tax payers are beginning to inquire what extra- ordinary public services were performed in return for these extraordinary benedts, and whether the payments have not been made about long enough. It has been a matter of general remark that | the memorlal asking the President toretain Major Twining in position as Engineer Com- missioner bore the largest number of names of. representative citizens, and was backed in per- son, by the largest delegation of the same class of citizens of any petition of District people ever presented at the White House. The Pre3- ident bas maniffesied so much interest in the Prosperity of the capital city and Its people that it ought not to be a matter of doubt that he Will respond favorably to this nearly unant- mous request for the retention of an offictal in whom such universal confideuce fs felt. The President can now estimate properly the animus of the efforts of the pavement rings and claim brokers to get rid of the man who has bailed their attempts to bleed the people of the Dis- trict. It wili be strange, too, if his indignation is not aroused by the underhand a:tempt of these jobbers and speculators to induce him to rid them of the vigilant superv'sion of an honest, efficient officer at this particular time when be is sO much in the way of their schemes. ——___<s.____ i The Indiana democrats, apparently, hold the party manscers responsibie for their defeat last fall, and intend to visit the penalty of retire- ment upon them. The empty honor of the mt- nority nomination for United States Senavor was due to Senator McDonald by the usages and precedents of party; but ne did not get fc. Ex-Governor Gray recetved the compli He ts what fs calleda newman iu the party Management of the stat>—new tn regard to the control of national caimpaigas Senator Me. Donald was the manager of the canvass last fall, and now, after having persiated in the declaration that they were defeated by bribery and corruption, his constituents propose to make bim suffer for that defeat. The Indiana | democrats must either admit that their piea of | M having been beaten by money 1s not true or else that they are unjust to Senator M“Donald. Not todo one of these things 1s to say, virtually that they censure the Senator because he did Rot go tmto the bribery business heavy enoush to win. —_—$—-—___ ‘The largest cotton crop ever ratsod in the United States bas just been gathered, though it fell short of general estimates, owing ch! Dad weather. ted to the growth of * year was 16,500,000, an Increase of 3,000,000 over the previous year. The largest | crop ever gathered, up to 1877, was In 1s60,with | shive labor, when the number of bales reacned 4,669,770. During the rebellion, but litue atten- Uon, comparatively, was paid to the cultivation Of cotton, and no record was kept. In 1566 the people of the south were compelled, once more, to engage In the cultivation of thetrciulet staple, and, though laboring under ail the disadvan- tages then surrounding the section, the erop amounted to 2.193.937 bales. The next year the crop fell off, but it increased tn 1s¢s about 400,- 000 bales. With the exgeption of isiz every Year subsequent to 1855 produced over three million bales, abd in 1576 about 4,500,000 bales were raised. For the last three years there has been pot oply @ steady increase In production, but in profits also, and the result is that the south {3 no longer poor. It ts already predicted that the crop of 1581 will far exceed that of ‘There were 3,755 business failures, according to Dur & Co.'s annual circular, in the Untied States in 1880 with labilities aggrazating $65, 752,000, against 6,653 failures wih $95,149,053 In Habilities tn 1 showing a decrease tn fatl- ures for 1380 over 1579 Of 1,923 and In Habtlities of about 52,000,000. In other words, these tig. Ures indicate an improvement of from 4) to 50 percent last year. The rapidity with which business has recovered from the terrific shock ofthe last panic gives rise toa fear that it is not founded upon a healthy basts; that a spec- ulative fever 1s raging which may result tnju- Flously. Last year 95,000,000 shares of stoc cs Were sold in the New York stock exchange, al- most a8 much as the sales of the two pre dears combined. The transactions of the New York clearipg house for the first week tn Jun- uary, iSS1, amounted to over $00,000,000, aft r « educting the transactions arising frm stock cperations. The solid men of New York show a want of Confidence tn the World’s Fair Commission and Are NOt at all inclined to contribute the four or ‘ive million dollars asked for to set the show on legs. They will not put up the money unless they can have control of its disburse- ment. Even the appointment of General Grant upon the commission does not serve the pur- poee Intended as he fs looked upon as merely a tzurehead who can have no real voice in the managemenf. Altogether the prospects for the Fair are pot hopeful. —————~--__ It dees not seem to be believed in Washing- Ton that Senator Wallace will work with u@ Grow men in Pennsylvania to elect a Doltiug republican United States Senatir over the ead of Oliver, the regular Cameron nominee, | No. 372 and 374 BROOME ST&EET, NEW YORK.
