TWO WITNESSES ARRESTED FOR PERJURY. After cur ot in the Kenward Philp trial Plwed”peaterda the wit- ness, Mr. Rol Lindsey, in answer-to Mr. Bitss, said that he hac never slept twice in tne same place for ten — had of James L. years. In re; Barry for to a question implying that when he gave his name on the stand as Robert Lindsey he had sworn to a false name, he stated that his mother’s name was Lindsey and his father’s Barry. Mr, Bliss then cross-examined witness, who could not name a single householder living bety @»n Cumberland and Frostburg, Md. Mr. Brooks then sald that their case for Mr. Philp was closed. The prosecution called H. J. Jobnson, the postinaster of Cumberland, who testified there was no such man as W. H. Thompscn residt in West Cumberland. He was then ask egarding various streets and localities de- scribed by Lindsey, and he flatly contradicted mos! of the latter's testimony. Wiliam B, Griffith, president of the First Na- onal Bank of Cumberland, testified that there Was lo man of the name of W. H. Thompson James Reid, who al of the jail, in Washington street, Cumberland, said there was no Mab hamed W. H. Thompson Mving near there, Lindsey, in his testimony, swore taat he — there with W. H. Thompson for over 12 “cara T. Morey, an old lady, testified that sh lived in Lynn, Mass.,for 14 years, and pre- vieusly lived twenty. five years in Loivell; she is a widow, and married Samuel C. Morey thirly- five years ago; he had three sons by bis first wife; he also bad two hali-brothers and a ful. brother, but none of the family was named Henry L. Morey; alawyer named Wilson ap- proached her recently and asked es to make an affidavit concerning the Morey family, but she refused to make or sign it; witaess never knew of or heard of any member of the family named Henry L. Morey; she never heard of 5. a Morey having an uncle named Henry L, orey. E. C. Morey, son of the last witness, exo ore that be bad no uncle named H, L, Morey, and never _— of such aman. John W. Morey, a Boston policeman for 35 years, swore that no member of the Morey family was named Henry L. Morey. He never heard of such a man until the Chinese letter was published. Samuel S. Morey never had an uncle named Henry L., and the witness would be his brother had such a man existed. Frederick B. Morey, whose mother 1s a sister of Samuel S. Morey, testified that he had a conversation with 8. S. Morey in Lawrence, Mass., after he returned from New York last , after testifying in this case, Lopes told him that he did not want to goto Net York, but that a man named Clarl 2 indacel him to go. Samuel told him that he felt that they would all be in Ludlow-street jail before they got through. Samuel sald that Clarke said it would be all right, and the whole thing would be drop after the election. Samael said they had a Herry L. Morey ia New Jersey, and I said to him then, “I suppose when you see him you will say, ‘Halloo, uncle, how are you?’ {Laughter} I saw Samuel S. Morey on bis return from New York, and he had lots of money in his pocket, over $100, I think, He was free with it; treated several times. Vey brought you here? A.—A Mr. Kim- _ an me if I knew anything about Heary Morey, and I told him all the conversation tate 8. S. Morey To Mr. Brooke,—I thought I might getold man S, S. Morey out of trouble; I advised him to come on again to New York and teil the truth: Itold him if he stuck to what he had testified to he would get into theenitentiary. ‘The next witness Was E. N. Kent, a chemist and ink manufacturer, who testified that he made an examination of the r of the Kirkland House, Lynn, and found thaton the z5th of February, 1s79, the name of Henry L. Morey is written in analine ink, while the other names are written in nutgall ink. The same result was obtained on the i7th and isth of Oc- tober, is79, examinations. Raven T. Powell, employee in the Eckhardt mine, of Maryland, gave a clear description of that region, and said that in his opinion Lind. sey was never in that locality. The latter's testimony was totally incorrect and was sheer nonsense, Assistant District —— Bell then rested ~ = for the prosecutiot in. Pryor mae a motion for the discharge of, Si . Philp, on grounds of insutlicient evi. er Davis sald he would give the case his most earnest attention, and render a decision on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, to which time he adjourned the proceedings. While the counsel was leaving the court de- tectives arrested Samuel Solomon Morey and Robert Lindsey on the charge of perjury. Mr. Geo, Bliss made the complaint against them. Morey testified that he had an uncie named Henry L. Morey, while a number of his relatives swore there was no stich maa In the Mcrey family. Lindsey’s evidence has been given in full. Both men were crestfallen at the turn Of affairs, and Justice Morgan committed them for an examination. ‘The arrests caused & good deal of excitement, and it Is rumored that other arrests wiil follow. the Case will be laid before the grand jury at once. LINDSEY A WASHINGTON MAN. A special from Cumberland, Md., to tae Balti- irore Sun says: Lindsey’s other name is said to be Broderick or O’Brien, and he halls trom ‘Washington. In the jam, his purse was ex- tracted from his pocket, containing $35 or $401n bills, several blank checks on the Farmers’ bank at Wythesville, Va., and a cancelled note bearing on its back the colonel's signature.
