THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. FRIDAY. . October 22, 1880. CROSBY S. NOYES. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paver _ Published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other datly papers here added to~ octher. ——————————— THE STaR office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Editor. The Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘THE Stax will be issued to-morrow in double- sheet form of fifty-six columns, or elght pages, It will be an unusually interesting number, containing a large amount of original and tel cied matter, including letters, special tele- grams, etc., from all quarters. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send In thetr orders as arly as possible for this enlarged and extra «dition. The number of new advertisements pointed thus far tn October Is 1,432. —_—_—_—_--__ Democratic Lana ee of the Vir- ginia Funders. It fs now stated, upon what seems to be good authority, that the national democratic com- mittee has determined to recognize the funder Ucket In Virginia as the one regular, according to all party requirements, and that an address to that effect will be Issued immediately. In deed, there does not seem to beany other course left for the national committee. Gen. Mahone has positively refused to consent to any sort of compromise with the funders. He would listen, according to reliable reports, to nothing short of the withdrawal of the regular ticket, and sub- Stantially promised nothing tn return—not even to withdraw his Congressional candidates io the several districts who endanger democratic guecess. The funders claim that they have from the first adhered to every regulation of Party discipline; that they called a convention, gent delegates to the Cincinnatt convention, and fo advance of the nomination pledged them- selves to support the democratic nom- inee, whomsoever he might be. They say that the readjusters, after failing to control the republican state convention, re- matned silent until after the democratic and republican tickets had been nominated, and then, in a convention called without any sort of reference to democracy, they decided to support Hancock. It Is argued that with this record of the two Virginia factions before them, shou!d tae national democratic committee recognize the readjusters, or fall to fully recognize the funders, party organization and discipiine would be pext te impossible hereafter. Now the ques- tion of importance fs, will this recognition add to the strength of the regulars in the state? The readjusters, indeed Gen. Mahone himself, Say ot; but he and his party will prohably dls- cover that they have underestimated the value Of the recognition. There are thousands of democrats in Virginia who care more for Han- eeek’s election than for the state debt question. There are others who realize that the latter question is not an issue in the pending canvass, These democrats are willing to vote for the ticket that is most likely to win, and thus make the Vote of the state secure for Hancock. The re- cognition by the national committee and its urgent sdvice to all democrats to support the funder tcket will, in all probability, determine the undecided in favor of that ticket. However, Gen. Mahene professes to be a3 confident as ever, and he ts a shrewd leader wko will make a good fight. ———_<+e-_____ It is to be hoped, In the interests of pubife peace and quiet, that the steps taken by the Ohio republicans to avoid any difficulty on ac- count of some of their presidential electors hoid- ing other offices will be followed by both politi- cal parties in all the statesof the Union. In ‘view of questions which may arise on that point when the presidential vote comes to b2 counted the republican authorities of Ohio have decided that every elector on ther ticket who now holds any other office must either resign the same or give up his place on the electoral tiexet to some one against whom that objection cannot be urged, and this whether the oitice In question be federal or state, elective or appointive. They are determined that there shall be no flaw in their proceedin, and that in case the Vote of their state shall b2 cast for Gar- field,—as they have no doubt it will be— there can be no question whatever ralsed about its reguiarity. This is a wise and timely measure, In mor* than a merely partisan point of view. The whole country ts fnterested in having everything connected with the next electoral count free from any doubt and com- Plication from the start. It doesn’t want any More electoral commissions, nor any excuse for one. Itwants the successful candidate, who- ever he may be, to be elected by so large a m- jority that there be no doubt about tt, and aul the proceedings conn cted with casting and eounting the electoral vote so regular and per- fect in every respect thatthe mer ment of the resuit will be accepted as tiaal and binding by every American mn, without re- gard to political p: In view of what ce marred in the sprit yoy real- ed too often ts eak down at last. Waea tt can ba asily a5 not it 13 best therefore to avola using that sort of a structure. Mr. Grace, the unton democ: mayor of Ne ratic nomtnce for y, has not yet formatly accepted th eratle epers of th nificant silence in tion. ‘The Tam. many org aing the tntroduc- sious belief into politics, have not yet opened the determined canvas; in behalf of Grace that !s to be expected of them. These facts seem to contirm the whisper that Mr. Grace Is to de: fon in order that a stronger n Inay be placed at the head of the ticket. ed by t do Hancoc! Will insist upon another seleetion for mayor. The Tammany men maintain that Grace {3 as strong as any elected, and that the democrats must calculate upon ag hard a fght being made against any nominee of theirs as is being waged against Grace. The ebief purpose of the managers ts to get o1t a large vote for Hancock, and this purpose ts kept steadily in view. It 1s sald that Grace reslly cares nothing for the nomination, and will b» governed entirely by the interests of his party- The silence of the organs looks as if they were not yet certain that the present nominee is the man they will have to fight for.
