THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY .... September S, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES... Editor, — The Evening Star has @ reguiar, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and eq ual to tha Of all the other daily papers here added to- Tre STAn offic is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or apy {nformation or business can be sent day or nixht, frex of charge. ‘The Country Safe. eommon saying that an exciting politi- iS Gisastrous to business, an‘ that a Presidential campain ts espectally depressing upon trade. There is nothing this fall to sus- tain this theory, but on the contrary eve: ng to upset it. The commercial reports from all our jarge cities show that the fall trade has opened with more life and vigor than for years past, and, indeed, the current of polities does not appear to come anywhere in coilision with that of business. The jobbers and wholesalers Of New York, Philadelphia and other northern Cities report larger sales than In past years and upon better terms; that the western andzsouth- ern buyers are paying cash to a considerable extent. The demand for fine imported goods that may proy assed as luxuries 1s greater than tn past seasons; the manufactories are all runripg on full time and good wages are Paid to the operatives. The southern cities are, comparatively, not vehind those of the north In the enjoyment of prosperity. The new crop of cotton ts pouring into their ware houses, it commands a good price, people are buying Nherally, and wages are nearly double the figures of last year. If this State of affairs teaches anything {t 1s that the people of this country are full of Canfidence in the stability and securityyot the ‘at, DO matter which way the election hat the agriculturists who produce our Greatest sources of wealth, and the bustness men Who handie these products take no stock in the fearful forebodings of the pollitcians that bankruptcy and ruin must ensue unless this Party is maintained in power or that party Is put in power. Amid ali the excitement that icians are striving to create the basiness of the country are not only undis- teadily increase in volum=and tm- portance. The predictions of dire calamity that are dally made from the political rostruma in the event of this or that result of the election are, evidently, not regarded by the peopl any consideration. However, this fact will not stop the warning cry of politictans, who long to save ® country that is not In need of being saved, ! a3 it is enjoying the highest degree of Tity—for which politicians are ot, in any wise, to be thanked. ° as worth The democratic fight Ia Georsia fncreases In bitterness as the day of election approaches, Ex-Senator Gordon, who but a few years ago {dol of the Georgia democrats, was loudly hissed while making a specch in Colum- bus the other night. He was advoeating Col- quitt’s election, and the anti-Colquitt men in the hall created such a disturbance that the Mayor was compelled to take the stand and ap- Peal for quiet. Even this appeal was unheeded, 88 Geb. Gordon was frequen hissed and tn- terrupted afterwards. On the same evening Gen. Lawton, of Savannah, another prominent and popular democrat, addressed a large meet- ing in Macon in bebalf of Norwood. He d: nounced Colquitt, and severely handled “Joe Brown, at: present U.S. Senator. He declared that Brown, though a man of brains, “could Rot be trusted.” Gen. Lawton was voctferously applauded by the Norwood men, and loudly hissed by the Colquitt men. The contest over the governorship has separated old personal and political ifiends, and the fight is growing so bitter that those upon opposing sides are regarded as enemies of each other. Unless ‘Georgia democrats are more forgiving than ave- Tage human nature, the party ts nearly hope- lossly divided. —__—<_—_<6e-—___. The plan of the South Carolina republicans 1s to make an aggressive canvass for presiden- tal electors and congressmen, aad let the state election go by default. They put no siate Ucket in the fleld, their tdea ig that they can trade republican votes for the democrat ‘Ket for democratic votes for the repub- ctors and congressional candidates. The managers think that the democrats are more anxious to hold the state than twoelect a President, and that therefore they will go fato Swehatrade. It tsalso the purpose of th publicans to contend for control of those coun- {es in which the colored voters outaumber the Whites. The democratic managers seem to be somewhat afraid of the plan of thetr opponents, as they are advising democratic voters against all trading of votes. ———_++e-__. ‘The number of illiterate persons in the south ts made the basis of all arguments tin ir Of national and public education. The reports of State superintendents of public schools are taken as showing the numbers, in each southern State, who are being educated, and the numbers Who are not attending schools. These reports are correct £6 far as the public scuools are con- cerbed, They show correctly just how many of both races are attending the pub! Schools, as they are called in those states, but 4) must not be concluded that the entire popa- lation. of school age, that 13 not Incla-led upon hese school rolls, la growing up tm Ignorance. Suc asion would be a great error. There ar esouth large numbers of pay or 3, a3 they are soma times udice ia regard to free schools still exists tn that scctioa. It can- Rot be said that the prejadice ts agata3t these chools, that there ts any hostulty to their existence, but there {3 a feeling that parents e able to pay for the tnition of th 1 the free schools are for who cannot afford to pay perhaps, se a authern states that has not at nd In the az. te the ¢ thus edu 1 reach ols village of the least one pay ‘The net rest seem to be the e publican majority somewh: of the last repres sional distr! mously rep jority was enough t ¢ election in Vermont governor by a re at in excess of idential year, es from all three of the congres- , And & legislature nearly wnant republican ma- Vermont, and thts ts b The street car company of Geneva, Switzer- land, have decided to increase the pay of their conductors and drivers, by giving them a share in the recetpta. It ts thought that the adoption of this plan will in- crease the receipts of the Company, by causing the drivers and conductors to be careful and obliging, and to keep a brighter watea for cus- tomers. ——ore- —__ ‘The Queen's speech proroguing Parltamant ts commonplace and contains nothing wo-thy of note or c@mment. It congratulates Paritament, *$ usual, and takes & rose-colored view of British affairs generally. Ths royal utterance is really nothing more than routine, aTording ‘the Crown an opportunity to say something in connection with the legislation of the realm. Queen Victoria seems to so regard {t, a3 she good-naturedly approves all that has been done by those who really rule the realm. ———+<+- -____ ‘The readiness with which employers yielded ‘to the demands of laborers for increased wages in New Orleans indicates a prosperous con- ition of business there. All the numerous colton presses conceded an increase in pay to the laborers engaged in handling cotton, aver- aging about fifty percent The draymen struck then for an increase of from $19 to $13 per week, and that has been allowed. +2 ___ In the history of the city there probably was hever so much complaint as now in regard to the Inefficiency of the garbage service. 13 MAETE Do remedy?
