THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONDAY........- September 6, 1880. _———— ee CROSBY 8. NOYES... Editor. The Evening Star has @ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and eq wal to tha of all the other daily payers here added to- ether. THE 8TAx office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Now for Virginia. The democratic discords in New York having been settled, the democratic managers are now turning their attention to the next Knotty prob- lem—the healing of the party quarrel in Vir- ginfa, which has reacted a point of soreness that seriously threatens to give the state to the republicans tn November. In the case of New York, it ts understood that the Imperative word requiring that a settlement should be made of the quarre! in the Interests of the elec- toral ticket came direct from Gen. Hancock, @nd was addressed more particularly to the “regular” or ant!-Tammany democratic organ- iation. It is intimated now that a similar Word has gone out from Governor's Island to the democrats of Virginia, and more directly to the division cailing themselves the “ regulars” Or funders. It would appear that they Rave been notified that the quarrel has been permit- ted to run on until the electoral vote of the state for Hancock 1s endangered, and tnat & stop must now be put to such foolishness. It ts reported that astute agents from the New York democratic inner councils have been sent to Virginia and have been for some days active. ly at Work to compel a compromise upon the electoral ticket between the funders and re- asljusters, even should !tybe necessary for the “regulars” to make very large concessions to Mahone, who evidently fears that he will never be able to rally his party again if tt abandons its distinctive organization and its electoral ticket this year. This report gets confirmation from the following tn the Richmond correspond- ence of the Baltimore Sux of to-day: “An important correspondence aas been going on for several days between Mr. A. Kotner, of Augusta county, the chairman of the reguiar democratic state committee, and Gen. Willlam Mahone, the chairman ef the readjuster com- mittee and the recognized leader of wing in this state. Itis mnderstood from the very best authority, or what at least purports to Such, that this correspondence has resulted in an understanding that Gen. Mahone ts to in- vite Mr. Kotner’s committee to meet his here on October 15th, when some course will be adopted Which wili withdraw one of the electoral tickets how in the fleld. It 1s stated by those who are acquainted with the correspondence, or claim to be, that Mahone refused to entertain any proposition which embraced In its conditions the withdrawal of any of the names on his elec- toral ticket or in any other way tended to make the readjuster party lose its Individuality. The correspondence may be made public tha few a A prominent member of the New York bar, and 2 gentleman well-known in this state for his eloquence and legal acumen, has been here and in Petersburg for the past ten days, during which time he has had frequent taterviews with Mahone and the leading democrats, very probably with the desire of accomplishing some compromise between the two wiags. re- adjusters say that the conference will result in the withdrawal of the regular ticket. and the reason that will De assigned for that course Will be the broad and high grounds of pure and disinterested patriotism; believing that, al- though that wing have a majority, they would not longer jeopardize the state for Hancock on Iecal issues. It cannot be dented that the re- adjusters are tull of hope and deflant. Whether feigned er not, the conference agreed on seems io have no terrors tor them. Major N. M. Meade, of Culpeper, one of the readjuster elec- tors, has been here for several days and was consulted by Mahone In regard to the corres- pondence recetved from the chairman of the State democratic committee. ‘The late day in the canvass for which this conference has been arranged almost practi- caliy precindes any compromise which does not provide for an absoluie withdrawal of one 0 f the tickets or a fusion of the two. It 1s set for adey just two weeks prior to the election, allowing uo time, if any were desired, for a call of another convention, or any other atrange- ment but a speedy settlement of the present differences by some short and direct route, ora declination by both sides.” ee eeeer Our Bosses. A subscriber writes to Tug Sta complaining of the sickening odor from the asphalt works on B street, which 1s espectally offensive these hot nights, compelling the closing of wlodows and causing nausea, retching, «¢., to persons having delicate stomachs. He asks 1f nothing can be done for the abatement of this nutsanee. Really this is a conundrum. it looks Uke a hopeless case. Last year a number of citizens, who had suffered from the nuisance until 1% became un bearable, made a vigorous effort to get rid of it. ‘They first appealed to the District Commission- ers. The District Commissioners did nothing. ‘They went te the Heaith OMicer. To the credit of the Health (fMicer it may be sald that, while his powers not enable him to summarily remedy the grievance, he alded tn bringing the matter before the courts. They weat to the grand jury. The grand jury promptly found an indictment, the sufferers thought speedy relief was comlag. Deluded mea, they know Perhaps District Attoraey is not aware of the Indictment, or per- aps he thinks it will be all the same to the v: tims a hundred years hence whether the nuisance Is abated or not. At any rate the asphalt boiling paving contractors keep up thelr works in fuil blast, right in the center of the city, in open deftance of the will of the pub- action of the grand jury. of course the District giving out the paving cog would see to it that ther con- tained stipulations agalnst the continuance of the { bolling nuisance tn the heart of the eity.
