A meeting cf the republican central commit- tee of the Distiict of Columbia was held last night at No. 1425 New York avenue, the object deing to elect a representative for service on the national republican committee. There were three candidates in the feld—Gen. KR W. Whit- taker, Dr. C, B. Purvisand S.J. Bowen. There Were present but 29 of the 66 delegates who co! stitute the full committee, but what was lack- iog in numbers was made up In the activity and Ofse of those present. Bernard and Marcellus West and Andrew Gleason were active for Bowen. Dr. Tindall and all the colored men, with few exceptions, espoused the cause of Pur- vis. Mr. Cunningham, of East Washington, did his best for Gen. Whittaker. The chairman, Mr. W. B. Reed, was vot present, and at 8 o’clock Isaiah Washington, first vice pre- sident, took the chair, and James McNabb, jr., Was requested to act as secretary, but dec! end Messrs. P. A. Jullien aud Collins Crusor were elected secretaries, Mr, R. W. Tompkins immediately took the floor and urged that a col- ored man be elected, giving as @ reason that fully four-fliths of the republican party in the Disirlet was colored, and he therefore urged the name of Dr. C, B. Purvis. Andrey: Gleason ai others said that no color Nine should be drawa, and Mr. Gleason nominated Sayles J. Bowen, referring to his services tothe party. Genet Whittaker’s name was presented by Mr. Mc- Nabb. Several ballots were taken and counted taries, the first resulting: Bowen 15, hittaker 11—no choice. The Bowen men, finding themselves in the minority, wanted to adjourn, and made several motions ‘to that effect, which were promptly voted down by the Purvis men. During the roil call on one of the motions the Bowen men left the hall; one of them remarking, ‘‘Let the black sons of b— elect Yuivis, We'll have no nigger in ours, They luye drawn the color line, and we will tighten it for them. We will organize a white repubil- can club. Mr. Tompkins, excitedly, said: “Mr. Purvis is @ gentleman and a scholar, and not a black s— of ab—, as he has been called here to- night.” ‘the second ballot was then taken, the Bowen men coming back, and it resulted in no choice, Mr. Parvis 16, Bowen 11, Whittaker 8, Ingersoll Jobn F, Cook 1. everal other ballots followed, and for a time there were charges of “ingratitude,” “stabbing friends in the back,” &c., and several times It appeared that the meeung would break up in a free fight, and the chairmen appointed W. The chairman then orderéd the seere- tary to Count the votes. The secretary said the number of votes cast was only 25 and it took $4 to constitute a quorum. The chairman then reversed his decision and ordered another ballot, which resulted: Bowen, 3; Purvis, Whittaker, 4. No quorum. Mr. Tindall moved i that a majority of those present, whether they vole or not, should constitute a quorum. After 2 good deal of fillibustering another ballot was had, Dr. Purvis receiving 22, Bowen 8 (the other Bowen men refusing to vote), and Whittaker 4. The chairman, a little excited and standing on a chair, said: “Gentlemen. this 1s getting mo- notonous. On the 19th of June last Anna was sent to the farm of John Weaver for milk. His house is nearly opposite Hershey's Woods, a short distance southwest of the city. While there the little girl approached too close- ly to a dog that was tied in the yard, and It S} Yong at her and bit her rather badly in the Wrist. During the night, however, the dog broke away. Tan into a belghborng yard, and died. Dr. War- ten, having been told that the dog hed eaten and drank as usual, did not canterize the wound, which, though somewhat painful, commenced to heal up satisfactorily, and the child made uo complaint, except of occasional slight pain in the wrist. Ie was not until Saturday last that the litte girl began to complain. On Sunday she was taken sick and a high fever set in. Yesterday morning she was asked if she wanted a drink ot water, and said she did. On beiag shown the water she uttered ashriek and feli unconscious to the floor. She soon recovered conscionsnes: talked naturally, but bad a wild and restiess ¢ pression of countenance, and soon had another paroxysin. It was found necessary to tle her hands to prevent her from hurting herseli or others, There was now no longer any doubt that she was suffering from hydrophobia. Paroxysm after paroxysin set In.
