The fusionists of the first congressional dis- trict of Maine have harmonized. The threat- ened bolt has been averted, and democrats and reenbackers are united in the support of Gen, }. J. A vigorous and determined tight is being made against the renomination of Gov. Colquitt, the present fa- cumbent, but it is eiteved that he will be the choice of the convention. It will he remembered that the health officer addressed a, letter to the District Commissioners some two weeks ago, 1n which he stated that the contractor was very derelict in his duty, and that his outfit for the service was insufticient for the service; this Was backed up by a report made to the health officer by bonis Tas; had been man had nt called for The contractor and his bye denied the truthfulness of the report of Mr. Robinson, and in order to get at the more fuily the Com- Inissioners requested the Major of Police to set his men to work and get the answers to ay housekeeper within their respective beats. The reports of every policeman were this morning grouped by the leutenants of the several pre- cincts and forwarded to the Major of Police, and by him to the District Commissioners. They are quite voluminous, especially where taken m detail, and appear to si lu the report of Inspector Kobinson and the health oficer. The health officer has thus far declined to certify to the bills of the contractor for the past month, on the ground that he Cannot consctentiously do so, as he does not think the service has been faithfully performed in accordance with the terms of the contract. ‘The Commissioners have as yet taken no ac- Uon upon these reports, JUST IN TIME, On Tuesday last Inspector Entwisle issued an order to the occupants of a dilapidated brick Vencment on the northwest oe of 9th and H streets southwest to vacate the as from the condition of the bi were in. danger. ‘The walls were only four inches in thickness, and on one we out ere t over an embankment of some fourteen high trom the pavement, cauged by the of the street. Confident assertions were made that our city had 69,000 Celestials, and e embers Of the constitutional convention voted for the exclusion of the yellow men from the calculation for state apportionment for the avowed purpose of reducing the influence of the metropolis, They carried their point, but it seems that they will fail Iu their main object, since San Frapcisco has one yellow to twelve white tnhabitants, while many other counties have, relatively, twice, and sonie four times, as may. The population of many portions’ ot Calffornia has fluctuated much within a fw years, abd some of the towns nave declined considerably within the last five years—perhaps More in business and confidence than tn pop- ulation.
