A WOMAN KEEPING A SECRET FOR FIFTY YSARS— MILLIONS OF DOLLARS INVOLVED—A MARYLAND FAMILY'S CONNECTION WITH THE CASE. There is now pending in the courts of Ohto a Suit involving several millions of dollars in Teal estate, and which, besides bringing some of the most prominent’ men in the country, in- cluding President Hayes, Chief Justice Waite, Judge Tilden and ot! t as contest- ants has an intensely romantic history con- nected with it, in which a Maryland family constitute the principal characters. ‘The story that some time tn the year 1Si2 a Captain ‘ord, of this city, was married to one Lovey Buskirk, a widow, formerly Miss Lovey Ward, of Somerset county, Md. Shortly atter nis marriage Capt. Ford is sald to have left Baltt- More ih command of a privateer, which was captured by the British. Captain Ford was taken captive and placed in Dartmoor prison, where he remained for some time, but finally sort by tunneling his way out.” He went to Sweden, and after the close of the war returned to this city, baving been gone about three years. On his return he found his wife living in good style. He also fcund that there was an addi Uon to his household tn the person of a lovely little girt, whom his neighbors said was the captain's and Mrs. Ford's ¢htid, but whom some of their most intimate acquaintances, it is alleged, declared was an illegitimate’ chiid. The captain and his wife, however, clattaed the child as their own offspring. C: Ford did not long remain tnactive, but soo: return tied out a elaver and mai Tips to Africa, landing his ivi this country at Charleston, Savann ih. and sometimes in Cuba. Returning home again his wife Is sald to have become Jealous of him. Capt. Ford tuen left the house again, and went West, where he located a number of’land war- rants, among Which was one at the Indian block house, or fort, at the mouth of the M:umce river, then’ (S17) a wilderness, now the site of the city of Toledo. it 1s over the ownership of this’ property that the sutts are jending, Capt. Ford, afteran absence of three years. came to Baltimore once more, Dut tind- ing bis wife determined not to have anything fo do with him he left, going to Mexico, where be entered the navy of that country, and served as alieutenant until is22, when hée'died intes- tste, His oniy Kinspeople, so far as known, were his wife, Lovey, bis mother and sisters, living in one of the New England states, and his so-called child, the ttle girl, whose name was Emeline. In 1883 Or 1834 persons from the west came here and commenced a search for the heirs of Capt. Ford. To. these Persons it, was alleged that Mrs. Buskirt, or Ford, represented tuat Emeline was the legitimate and only child of Capt, Ford, and selling her dowry interest in the Toledo land to them. she caused Emeline to convey the fee, receiving for It a small sum of money. There was living with Mrs. Buskirt a sister namcd Elizabeth Ward, who, it 1s claimed, begged Mrs. Buskirk to undecelve Em- cline and to tell her whose child she really was, So that a fraud upon the purchasers of the property might be prevented. Meanwhile, another party, observing the growing importance of Toledo, inquired as to the ute to Ford's property, then vacant and unenclosed. After investigating to some ex- tent Capt. Ford's life, this second party came to the conclusion that the captain had left no legi- Umate children, and so purchased the title of the property from Capt. Ford’s mother and sis- ters. In the course of time it happened that Ben Wade got an interest in the property, and Sent some of his agents here to see that the title wes clear. These agents found the mar- rage record of Capt. Ford and Lovey Buskirt in old St, Paul's parish record. After a great deal of sp istien f {n tke Ohio courts between the owners of the two titles, the case was finally decreed in favor of the Baltimore title, deposi- Uons having been returned to the court alleg- ing that Elizabeth Ward had sworn that Eme- lene was the legitimate daughter of Capt. Ford and his wife Lovey. About a year afterwards, however, Elizabeth Ward, who was then married to aman named Jobnson, and was living near Marion, a few miles from Crisfield, somerset county, Md., saw an account of the decision in a Baltimore paper, and was heard to declare that a great wrong bad been committed, and that she and she alone could rightit, To Mr. John H. Handy, of this city, aud Mr. Hyman, a western lawyer, who called to see her, she refused to disclose’ any- thing as to who the real parents of the child were, but persisted in saying that she had never sald Emeline was the daughter of her sister, Whereupon Mr. Hyman flied a petition to set aside the decree on the ground that it was ob- tained by forged and fraudulent testimony. Judge Tilden, a cousin of Samuel J. ‘Hilden, and the principal person concerned, then brought suit to recover possession of the epee lost by the decree; after which Judge . Of this state, by special commission, took testimony to sustain the case. After a great deal of hard and sktiltul work Mr. Handy Succeeded at last, in 177, in getting Mrs. John- son, nee Elizabeth W to make a statement in which she acknowk that Emeline was her own daughter, the Child of an Irish sea Captain who frequented Capt. Ford’s house, ‘To cover her sister's disgrace Capt. Ford's wife had declared to the world that Emeline was Ler own child, and as such she lived ror many years, And 86 at last the secret was disclosed. Eme- Ine was married to a former captain of an oyster pungy. who 1s now living in this city. Her mother. Elizabeth Ward, died at her house, in Somerset ¢ u ty, last year, Buskirt his been dead many years, A great railway depot has been built on the ‘Tol do property under the Baltimore title, and, ii 1s said, nearly 209 dwellings. It comprises almcst all of the Sih ward of that city, A lange number of persons are directly or indirect! concerned in the case.—#alt, Sun, 26/%, MES. FORD'S CAREER. A Baltimore dispatch to the New York Sun, im relation to the case says: Mrs. Ford, after being abandoned by her husband, went from bad to worse, until she became proprietress of & noted io in this city. Her ‘hier, Em- eline, had grown up to be a su: ly beau- tiful woman, and became the chief attraction of her mother’s house. With her life alone are associated many involving the suicide and ruin ‘of her admirers, whom she turn dismissed after enriching herself at their expense. At length so- ciety was shocked by her marriage to one of Baltimore's most wealthy merchant princes, who became infatuated with her. Three p: Dames stand high in social and financial circles. Mrs. Ford con- Unued to keep her resort for some years after ber daughter's og and accumulated a comfortable fortune. Then she retired to a quiet residence in the suburbs.
