A gentleman well informed on the polt says that the geeral has under serious sdvisement a proposi- tion from the San Pedro mining com- pany, now operating in New Mexico, and that his visit to New Mexico was on purpose to examine the property of this company. The salary which the company offers Grant is not less than $25,000 per annum, to take general direction of ite affairs and give it pres- tige. Its present president is George ‘William Ballou, of - Boston. The property forms part of the canyon del Aqus, Mexican grant. Placers are very rich, but the Ameri- cans have found their working un- profitable on accounts of the scarcity of water. If General Grant goes in ho will advise the laying of water pipes from the Samlia mountains, soms eighty miles distant. While visiting the mines he manifested grest iuterest in them ssking numerous questions snd closely scrutinizing them. The aroh of the tunnel aod_ the iron p'ates will then be torn away and search be made for the bidies. Mr. Anderson thought that they would be recovered b, Wodnesday or Thursday. Should any obatacle prevent the proper sinking of the ¢ ffor dam, it may be weeks before they are reivered. Mr. Lovejoy, who is superintending ~the operati-na of the coffer dam, thinks it will take two weeks to sink it. Officeérs of thw' company do not believe that the struc- ture has caved tn under the river bed, nor thut the men were crushed in the tannels. They still hold to the theory that they were drowned by the sudden inflow of water, aod that the bodies will be found ab ‘ut twenty-five feet below the surface.
