Editor Star:—¥rom the 16ty of July, 1790, the District of Smee enacaen at (oerttperaretl ow ‘ears ago. Since that w mi 'y changes ve taken place in the capital ty place of a Swamp crowded with brashwood and rank weeds, the abode of reptiles of the most vene- mous character, and the subterranean sewer once the resort of every description of jwild fow!, we have stately private mansions, Dificent public buildings, and streets and ave- nues, junequalled in the Unton for their facilt- Ues of traverse alike to the teamster and the pedestrians, Surely the advent of the ninth decade deserves some popular recognition. 1 Would suggest that the day be appropriately celebrated. Let the cannons roar, proclaim the opening day—the trained bands of the District turn cut in all the panophy of war and display their discipline through our main thorou; nfares; let the brotherhood societies—mounti foot—fall into line in their maernes to swell the joyous processton, let martial muste fill the air and the entire city exhibit the scene ef a gala day. I leave this suggestion to be carried into execution by those of Our citizens who so pratseworthily take @ prominent, part in the cel- ebration of interesting public events. A NORTHERN DENIZEN. “shop Girls.” Editor Star:—The respected and respectful editor of THE EVENING STAR 1s probably un- aware that many ladies employed as clerks and saleswomen in stores, feel the term “shop girls’ appiled to them as an approtrious or contempt- ous one—especially those from Philadelphia, where that term is never used. The (Quaker city was probably the earllest to open these employments to the sex, and from the begin- ulng has treated the employment as honorabla, and those thus employed a8 worthy of respect: Hence women of the most respected familtes whose fathers have been unfortunate in busi- hess, or died in embarrassed circumstances, have gladly accepted such employment; and domg so has never lowered their social stand- ing, or lessened thelr respect from the public, ‘They were “ladies” equally before and after they went into stores, and “ladies” they are considered and called by the people of that city. ‘The British name “shop,” for a store, find no use here, except In thoughtless connection with ladies who attend there, and should be omitted in defence to those who are thus wounded by ft. PROPRIETY, ‘sim- Who is Respoi Star:—T noticed in ‘TH Stan of the 2d a paragraph stating that the steamboat authorities say they are not responsible for the terrible list of accidents that have recently oc- curred, but that it is the fault of the law. 1 pune would be much more ready to take st in such a statement, if we did not witness right at home, under the very eyes of the authorities, open and outrageous violations of the law, With ho attempt on their part to prevent them. On a recent excursion from this city, lam informed that there were eight hundred persons on board the steamer, and Not boats suftictent to carry one-tenth of that number, nor life preservers enough for one-half, and, what there were, were inaccessible. Fortunately no accident occurred but sup there had been one, then co: ible? Id these officials say they were not responsibie? Why do not these officials look after these mat- ters and see that the law is complied with, or Prosecute the offenders, as it is their duty to do? Like the rest of the public, I relied upon them, and supposing they had done their duty, per- mitted four of my children to go, which I cer- tainly would not have done had I dreamed of such a state of facts. HUMBLE POSITION OF NAMES SINCE BECOME PA- ‘MOUS THE WORLD OVER, [Louisville Courier Journal. ] Mr. D. B. There were then Gignt 4 oa of infantry, five of artillery, and two of di ns, by which mame the: cavalry was d ited. These, with a smali general staff and an engineers’ Corps, Composed all the United States army. Winfield Scott was Major-General 1n command of the army. Gen. George B. McClellan was Second Lieutenant jm the Third Infantry, so obscure that his name was printed ‘Geo. C. McClellan.” In the same regiment Don Carlos Buell was also a Second Lieutenant. Tne Fourth Infantry contained two Second Lieu- tenants who made their names memorable in the civil war, on opposite sides—Gen. Long- Street and Ulysses S. Grant. Longstreet had then been in the service two years, while Grant had quitted West Point but a year previous, and was “attached to the army ‘asa supernu- merary, with the pay and rank of Second Lieutenant.” William T. Sherman, present general of the army, was first Lieutenant in the Third Artillery, as was Gen. O. C. Ord. Robert E. Lee was a Captain of Engineers, as Was George W. Cullom, while under them in the same corps were Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard— who has since dropped the “P” in his name— Gen. M. C, ete, Gen. W. 8S. Rosecrans, and Gen. HL. W. Halleck, the last two being ranked as Second Lieutenants only. In the pe Graphical corps were Joseph E. Johnston, First cutenant, and John A. Macomb, who fought afterward on opposite sides. Gen. C. C. Augur Wasa Lieutenant in the Second Infantry, in which Simon B. Buckner and Gen. R. S. Canby, Who was assassinated by the Modocs several years ago. were Sccond Lieutenants. Gen. Abe Buford, of Kentucky, the well-known turfman of to-day, was then a Second Lieutenant of the First dragoons,of which regiment William J. Hardee, of “Hardee's Tactics,” and one of the hardest fighters of thé confederacy, was Cap- tain, Gen. John Sedgwick was First Lieuten- ant of the Secend Artillery. The Sixth In- fantry roster, however, contains more of inter- est than ‘any other. Of that regiment the Colonel was Zachary Taylor, who now sleeps quietly just outside this city, after having been galiantly amid all the gloties and rigors of the war with Mexico and occupied the Presidential chair. In that regiment Frederick ‘'T. Dent, brother-in-law of Grant, was a Second Lieutenant. The last of the list of Second Lieutenants was Winfield S. Hancock, who had just graduated from West Point with Grant. A JUDGE Wno BELIRVES IN GHosTs.—The Newburyport Herald says: In the police court, Thursday morning, Isaac Hibbs of West New- bury was indicted for an assault and discharged. ‘The facts In the case appear to be as follows: On the morning of the sth a company of young m:n thought it would be a good joke to throw a stone into the chamber window of one of the eluzens of thattown. A member of the family, however, overheard the young fellows plotting mischief, and, hurrying home, informed the old gentleman of the pian, and he, quickly donning a portion of his undergarments only, hastened to put himself in ambush. When the young rioters eame along he sprang out, and all ran but one: who stood up and knocked the old gen- tieman down a couple of times. Whereupon a Warrant fer assault was issued, and, when brought Into court, Hibbs pleaded thet “he thought it was a ghost, and he wasn’t golng to un from it.” Accordingly.bis honor ruled that, if the young man thought it was “a ghost,” and Was struck With that idea, he committed no as- Sault, and, consequently, should be discharged. Such’a judge as that deserves a much wider re- putation than we are able to give him. TROUBLE 1s apprehended between farmers and the police of Wabasb, Ind.
