THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONDAY... July 12, 1890. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. The Evening Star has@ regular, perma- nen’, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat of all the other daily papers here added to- ———————————————— ‘Tue Star has 8 direct wire from its news room to She Western Union Telegraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiate to all parts of the @lobe, and is therefore enable’ to secure the latest jews by ite own operator from every quarter up to ‘within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re cotves tches. Persons leaving town for mer travelers, can have Taz STR mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty ceuts per month, the address being changed 28 often as desired. The money moust accompsny the order in all cases. Much sorrow was felt in this city yest over the announcement that Mr. Corcoran was seriously, and perhaps fatally, IM, at White Sulphur Springs, and this feeling was aug- mented by the fact that his family physician and confidential business agent were called ty by a special train. Our fil be glad to Known that telegraphic jay state that he has no serious or unusual aliment, and that he will probably be Out again in aday or t This inteiligence Will be welcome not only in Washington but Wherever Mr. Corcoran’s name fs known. — as, in point of popula- thirteenth elty in the Ualted states. 3 5 e a In 1864 tion, the Between that year and 1570 she passed Newark, Louisville and Albany, each of which outranked her before. and she was in turn overtaken by San Franciseo.—which stood 1860,—thus becoming In 1 below her in » the eleventh city in point of Sne holds the same relative position under the enumeration of 1530. eae ee Five steamers safled from y York for European ports on Saturday, carrying out over five hundred first-class passengers. One of them,—th tannic, always a favorite with travelers,— a larger saloon passenger list this trip than ever before. All the five vessels Were heavily laden with provistons and grain. us and rapidly grow one woul! sc. ef any consequen ade. Yei this has happened. and rather promising clty ng Western Ina pro: State like I see a ctl during the ‘The once of Keokuk Of from 12,766 In 1870, to fn 1s), and 4his without any special cause of depression and decay such as some times overtakes a once thriving co:muatty, in the forth of exhausted mines, or something of that sori. The other to the state gener- ally show a satist The number of immigrants landed In N York for the first six months of the pres year was an altogether larger numb: than er been landed there before ina single half-year. It {s gratify'ng to learn in Connection with these figures that a majority of the arrivals are in better circumstances than than has usually been the case lately, and that they also show a more general disposition than formerly to push out into the rural districts and engage in agricultural pursuits, elther on their OWn account or as hired labor. These gre facts upon which the country fs to be congratulated, Fora number of years past the newly arrived foreign population has done little else than hang around our cities, and engage in keeping saloons, preaching communism, fomenting dis- turbances between employers and the employed, and living by charity or crime. To such an extent was this becoming the rule that many thoughtful and observing persons were serl- ously considering the propriety of getting up ai agitation leoking to the discouragement if not the actual and entire prevention of immigration. This proposed action was based «.Uy on the ground that the arable land of the country ts pretty well taken up, and that foreign labor is no longer needed to develop the resources of the country, and partly on the ground that the classof foreigners which had been seeking our shores of late years was an ‘undesirabie if not absolutely dangerous element in our population. If the statements referred to above be carrect, it ts a hopeful sign; but the fact still remains that many people firmly enter- tain the idea that, in view of the excess of 1a. bor fn the country, foreign immigration is a thing that to say the least ought not to be en- couraged as 2 principle in the administration of Our affairs. They hold that we already have a8 Many hands as our labor can profitabiy em- Ploy, and as many mouths as those hands can Properly ‘eed. We observe a statement going @e round of our exchanges to the effect that a wealthy Vene- ‘lan Israelite, now residing in Jerusalem, has &IVen or offered to give 60,000 francs to establish &b ogricultural schoolon the Plains of Sharoi if tLe statement be correct the money wilh Be misapplied. All the agricultural education needed to develop the wealth of that once tam- Ous garden spot, is what would be furnished by @ first-class American sub-soil plow, a team of Strong oxen, and a man who knows how to use them. The culifvation tt now receives is what it gets by betng scratched on the surface With the point of a crooked piece of timber, Gragged by a half-starved donkey, and guided by a spiritless tax-ridden Turk, who doesn't Want to produce much because he would then have to surrender iaue to the thieving tithe- Satherer of his master. The soil of most of the plains and many of the valleysof the Holy Land is both deep and rie, and properly culti- ¥ated would yield fully as much asthe aver- age land of this country. ‘. The number of deaths | Teg stered in New York for the twenty-four hours -ndmg at noon Yesterday footed up 135. Of tuls number 76 were children, whose deaths weve largely at- tributed to the extreme heat. “During ¥ the previous twenty-four hours thers were 13% deaths, 60 of which were of children. er ew The trouble with the St. Lonis cans is, accord- Ing to the papers of that city, isnot so much in the enuimeration of this year as!a that of 1si@, The population ag returned then was 310,564; now, according to the best showing that can be made, {t ts 340,040, indicating an tn- crease in the ten years of less than 30,000. AS the last decade was on the whole favorable to U.> crowth of the city, It became necessary to * for this slight advance, as compared growth of other cities not more favor- ted. The explanation as raade now {ne Census Of Isi0 was doctoret by the a of something Ike 50,009 fctitious es; in other words, instead of the populi- ng 310,864 in 1870. and the facrease tn 4 years only about 10 per cent, the true 2 23,000, and the rease in the last decade something lke cent, Whether the expianaticn as given De curvect, or whether it is thought better to acknowledge false returns tn 1570 than admit almos} growth since then, isa point upon ‘Which opinions will probably differ. One thing, however, is evident. St. Louts made a grave mistake when she failed to secure the enumer- ators of 1570 to do the work of 188). Had she taken this precaution, although she might not hhave preserved her self-respect, she would not now be humitllated before the world, and espe- elally before Chicago. o+—____ ‘The Putladelphia Press came outin anew nd handsome dress the other day, and it ts ‘Only just to say that the paper never looked better and was never more vigorously edited than row.
