* SSS ren THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY. CROSBY 8. NOY: he Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more ” than doudie that of any other daily paper " published in Washington, and equal to that Of all the other daily papers here added to- @ether. ——S——_————————————— ‘Tre Gran has 8 direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to Within afew moments of going to press. It is the only eveniux paper sonth of Philadelphia which re- Seives exclusively the Associated Prose di Persons leaving town for the season, and Sam- mer travelers, can have THe Stan mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the addres ing chanved as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in sll cases. By mutual concessions the threatened row between the Grant and anti-Grant factions of the republican national committee has been avoided. The Grant men appear to have gained most by the compromise. The most im- Portant point they won was securing the ad- Mnission of the solid Grant delegation from Iitt- nols, Had the twenty contesting Blaine deie- Gates been admitted, it would have beea a severe, and perhaps fatal, blow to Grant’s can- aidacy. Under the agreement the forty-two Grant delegates will vote in the preliminary Organization of the convention, which fs a Matter of no small moment to his managers, who rely upon a majority vote of the conven- tion for success, In counting by state delega- tions, aclear majority Is against Grant, and therefore the committees will be composed of men uniriendly to his candidacy; but, with a majority of the delegates In favor of Grant, his friends can vote down majority reports from committees and adopt minority reports. This will, no doubt, be the plan of their fight. In the selection of Senator Hoar as temporary chairman of the convention, the Grant men have not lost anything. While Mr. Hoar has not been regarded as specially friendly to the third term idea, he is known to have a very friendly feeling for Gen. Grant personally, and be ts supposed to be opposed to the nomination of Blaine. He is belleved to represent tie anti- ne sentiment which has so often, In the st two or three years particularly, manifested ator Hoar, and pleds ns to vote for him as temporary chairman, cates that they believe Grant’s interests to fe in his hands. The exclusion of Lousiana from participation in the temporary crganization fs of no particular consequence to either side. The entire delegation is contested | d the one that has the prima srcie case in tS zavor Would cast more votes against Grant than ior him. Upon the whole, t irant men have Won the advantage In the start. SEBS TE The census enumerators have begun their Work, and in order to facilitate their labors and tobavea complete and accurate census the People should receive them with courtesy and answer Uielr questions with patience. Much depends upon the conduct of the public, and it is not only a mistaken idea, but a misehfevous One, tO assume that people are not bonnd to an- Swer the questions of enumerators. There fs a law to compel responses; but, as everybody is interested in having a complete and accurate census, there ought not to be any occasion ror appealiag tolts provisions. The census will exhibit the progress and prosperity of the coun- try during the past ten years, and the informa- tion upon which to base the work can only be obtained by sending agents into every house- hold. The replies are all treated as confiden- tial, so that ladles who are averse to telling theirages need not fear any damage to their Matrimonial or other prospects by reason of telling the truth. On Monday the Cincinnati Commercial Allied twelve cohumns of tts space with the names of persons claiming to be republicans residing tn that city and other parts of Ohio who have Signed declarations that in their opinion Gen- €ral Grant cannot carry that state, and that they will not vote for him if nominated. Ir Present promises and threats are worth any thing, nothing 1s clearer than that Grant could not carry Ohio next fall It ts likely however, that if he ts the nomtnee most of those who are loudest against him just now in Ohio and elsewhere will be found working hard and Voting for him by the time the election takes Place. It is generally the fellows who don’t say much that make the mischiet. e Pi ace from 3 to Ladies" Site in Whit tase, and French Muslin and Lace; prices frock 33 to as Linen Lawn and Gingham, in good Styles.
