FASHIONS FOR JUNE. Summer Outfits—Toilettes for In and @Out-door Wear—Tea ing Costumes, and Dresses. _ {From Our Oren Corresponde New York, May 31, 1580, There is one very great and obvious objection tothe dress of the present season, which can be appreciated by any one that has eyes, and that fs not the glaring and absurdly tnappro- Priate (for the season) combinations of red and yellow, or the collections of gilt and tinselled effects, but the loose ends, the flip flapping of Ube palchy garments as ladies walk the streets, The combination of fabrics, the multiplication of different colors strengthen the impression of resUesshess ang uneasiness which movement gives and deprives popular dress, as it is seen on our thoroughfares, of any element it possessed of repose, dignity, or certainty. Basques are cut’ square at. the nec! in front, and In coat-tails at the back. Drapery has points over- er lapping squares, and long ends which, like the stragglers after an army, have LO apparent connection with the main’ body. Throughout the thing, to which tt is folly give the name of design, there Is an utter lac Of sequence and order, Such as ts necessary to tive an idea of purpose and completeness, ENT NOVELTIES. Recent devel®pments prove that there has been no active advance made either fn taste or methods. We are just as ready to selze an ab surdity as ever, and it 1s probably only a ques. tion of time When hooped skiris and all other monstrosities of the past will again come to the e. Quite a new idea in complete spring s Is the “Pligrimage sult.” It 1s a very good name for It, as it was originally designed. ‘The only objection to tt 1s that ft 1s not neat or practically suited to its purpose and looks fan- as If Intended for a fancy dress rather than a compact traveling dress, which isits use, if it has any. The feature of It Is a long loose cloak with a hood. This Is ted at the throat with a ribbon or cord and tassels, and as it hangs free down its entire length, the inner edges are lined with satin, The sleeves are siighuy Howing. IUsskirt, broadly belted tn with chamois leather, ana a chamois pocket is suspended from tne side under the cloak, the open front disclosing {t, however, as it 18 worn very much toward the center. Hats and bonnets show the wildest vagaries. ‘There are straw gipsles which are very well suited to little girls, and a certain kind of pas- toral, childish looking women, but are hideous- ly unbecoming to others, and with the natural perversity of human nature, now that there potnted plenty of varlety, almost everybody gets the Wrong thing and there ts the confusion of Babel Instead of the lovely harmony of blended and refined tastes. All the yellow straws, yellow “satin” straw, yellow Leghorn, yellow Tuscan and yellow straw are in great form and are fashion- y trimmed with red mingled with yellow or with different shades of hellotrope. All yellow bonnets have fringes or wreaths or crowis co’ ered with yellow buttercups or the bright mus- tered or the paler cowslips. Charming wreaths for white bonnets are made of wood violets in two tints, the brim of the bonnet being ned with hellotrope satin and Scarf of lace or tulle used for strings. The all yellow bonnets are not so glaring as might be tmagined, for they are usually combined tn the paler tints, and ta several shades with handsome black tollettes the effect is exceedingly good, ‘The most striking contrasts and those whitch are the most distressing are obtained by uniting the strongest yellows With flery reds, aad these are unfortunately the most common. All-vellow dresses will not beat all uncommon this summer at the watering places, forsome have been made recently, one Of which was of yellow satin foulard ‘trimmed with yellowlace and poppy red satin bows. A NEWPORT TRUNK. Last week a trunk was sent to Newport whicti contained some charming toilettes in the fine summer materials which have recelved the spe- cialendorsement of /a mode. Among these I remarked particularly two of tine ivory Madras muslin, trimmed with rea: Languedoc lace and ruby satin ribpons. Oneof these was made with two skirt; the other formed a jacket with cascades of lace down each side of the front. The back of the skirt was a mass of narrow flounces. A pale blue dress was of the thin wool Ussue called “nuns velling.” It was flounced to the waist with plaited ruffles graduated in ne. ‘The boddice was a deep pitted moyen- age waist, cut In a square at the back, Into ich the pleatings were Inserted, but the Whole effect was tat and shaped closely toa beautiful Ngure. There was no satin trimming except satin bows and numerous pipings 0} satin outlining the square of the neck, witch Was cut narrow and filled in with fne tucked muslin. More in the line of the present rage for quaint figures Was a dress of Japanese chalé with its Pale ground of mixed silk and wool and ir- reguiar design, which st ts a lizard Ina Jeaty stalky a of the same shades of olive, with tlecks of brown, red, old blue and gold. ‘This dress is draped away from the front, which is shirred, aud also trimmed with lace. The satin ribbons, Which seems inevitable, are old biue ard gold. A lovely tea-gown was of cream Surah, trimmed with Mechlin lace and satin ribbons, anda stylish dinner dress was of rich fawn colored silk—the front a mass of shirring, the sides pleated diagonally, the back draped very gracefully above the flounce which was kilted in clusters, and the boddice, an open jacket of soft ruby and gold brocade, bordered with rich lack lace embroidered with gold, which was put on plain so astofallupon. The effect of this toilette was certainly exquisite. What was called an “heliotrope” dress was very effective, though strictly conventional The front was composed of shirred heliotrope silk, and this also formed a closely plea! lower founce. Above this the costume was satin foulard in a chintz pattern, in which there was some mixture of dull violet or hellotrope upon an ivory ground. The back of the basque was gathered in oe and formed an hollow which Was lined with heliotrope silk. The eer | was ruchifg of the silk and satin mixed, the interior plaitings were of fine real Breton lace. It was really tlower-like dress. CURTAIN AND RACING DRESSES. Much more odd and startling are costumes intended for Jerome Park races. One of these was a “curtain” dress, dark flowered chintz, claret and blue over a plain black velvet skirt; large hat of coarse straw trimmed with a soft handkerchief in the two colors, and a bunc! mixed roses; the brim faced with black v Another is a “ handkerchi blue with lines of black, white and pink. It con- sists of a jacket and two skirts trimmedwith cross. bands and a kilted tlounce, and is accompanied by a black “ Rembrandt” straw hat faced with tas but all black on the outside and principally feathers. A dark blue dress, tine wool, is com- posed of pretty trimmed skirt and basque no trimmings save gilt buttons. The bonnet is a capote of dark blue silk faced with yellow gold satin, and a bunch of sagpes is the principal trimming of the outside. A quiet almost quak dress, but very distinctive, is of soft brown foulatd combined with foulard of the same sbade, but dotted with paler petits pois in satin. This trimming drapes and kilts the gkirt, and forms the long close cut jacket, which has a of pure virgin gold, petther deepen Ror ated bs silver. |All the peur copper able m odistes ‘will ‘be brought ts boas - versify combinations of this description “and Fold Ince. goid colored satin, go ‘alk nd broidery mixed with pearls, and gold and pearl fringe, Will ali be Drought into requisition. FOR SUMMER WRAR, “high art” ball costume for roduces a Snow effect in the fo aterial is satin of the new changeable kind, which appears pale Tose in one liglit and shades to pale sfivery blue in another. ‘This satin Is almost as light as summer silk In tea he “snow effect” is ned by the adjustinent of tiny frills of fine alenele justered together upon the shoulders and the top of the hips in such a way that at the first clance 1t_ seems as though the wearer had been snowed upon.
