HOUSE.—After our report closed— The House went into committee of the whole (Mr, Carlisle, of Kentucky, in the chair) on the Teport of the committee on rules. Mr. Shallen- berger, of Pennsylvania, advocated an amend- ment which he proposed to offer providing that the committees having charge of the subject matters to which the general appropriation bills apply shall prepare these appropriation bills and report for reference to the committee on ap- propriations. Mr. Horr (rep.), in a humorous Speech, explained why all the committees of the House Should report tg the committee on mant- factures, of which he Ts chairman, instead of to the appropriations or any other committee. Debate was continued by Messrs. Sparks, Scales, Warner, Kenna, and others. The committee then rose. Adjourned. +. Maine’s Mixed Government. THE BRIRERY INVESTIGATION. The bribery committee of the fusion house in Maine held a meeting yesterday afternoon. Mr. Clark (greenbacker), ‘the counted-in member from Nobleboro, testified that about a week be- fore the meeting of the legislature his brother informed him that, a certain man wanted hun to tell him that if he would resign hits position and give up his certificate he should have a good place in the Boston custom house as long as the repubilean party was in power, A few daysafter a man,Whose name he positively refused to give, came to see him and renewed the offer of a place in the custom house and also $1,000 in money. $560 down and $500 after the organization of the legislature. This he positively refused. ‘The m0 wanted him to come to a hotise in Augusta. The man said the money he offered was his own. Clark was pressed exceedingly hard to ay e the man’s name, but positively retused to io. so. ifred S. Kimball, county attorney of Oxford, s the next witness. He said he saw Swan in the Augusta house on Monday, the night of the organization, and Swan told’him he had been informed that an effort was being made to buy up representatives; that he was going Into it to get some money and expose them. He § van about noon the next day, when showed him a roll of bills, which he said he had elved from Wal . White, which, id, he had received In consideration of resigning his. ‘at in the house. ‘This testimony contradicts Swan’s affidavit, which sets forth chat he went from the court house, where he received the money, to the Granite National Bank, and there obtained a draft. At this point the investigation ‘was suspended for the afternoon. 10 OBEY THE ACTING Gov- ERNOK.
