In a few minutes ‘he heard pistol shot: and Sam Bray ran across 10th street and sai “Frank is shot.” In a few minutes he saw ae- ceased dragged out of the house and left on the pavement. There was great excitement about half-past three o'clock yesterday afternoon en G*street between 6th and 7th streets, In coneequence of the shooting of John H. Morgan, son of Senator Morgan,of Alabama, by Miss Lucy Walton Rhett Horton, a young lady from Dayton, jbama. Tt appears from statements of persens who claim to be cognizantot the ‘tacts, yesterday afterncon Morgan, in asians ‘with @ gentle- man friend, was retu is father’s resi- dence, at the corner of 4th and @ streets, and that on, between 6th and 7th streets, in the neighborhood of Gheen’sstables, they were met by Miss Horton, and THE SHOOTING took 2 The ball tock effect in the left shoulder-of her victim, and tt 4s represented by spectators that ne ‘was within a few feet ef By at the time, and was porns from striki in him Ina vital part by his friend, who knoek« her arm up.as she fired the pistol. She at once started up th street and took an F street car going east, and was pursued by a large crowd, several persons persuading her to effect her escape before the police appegred, In the mean- zime young Morgan was assisted to his home by iriehns. Officer Joseph Carter, who was first on the spot, followed the car to sth street, when, understanding that it was a man who had fired the shot, he preceeded to the car and was about to.arrest a man inside who was pointed out by some one as the right party, when he was in- formed by another officer who arvived that it was a Woman who was wanted. MISS EORTON ARRESTED. Miss Horton at once rose up, remarking that she was the one wanted, and left the car, sur- rendering herself te Officer Carter, who turned her aver to Officer Britt, of the 5th. preeinet, and started to look after the wounded man; Mr. Britt in the mean time escorting her to the 5th ee station, on 10th street. Wm. A. Cook, called and held a brief conversation with her. HER STATEMENT. Miss Horton did uot seem to be excited in the slightest degree after the shooting, and talked freely and quite as calmly us upea any com- mon place subject, stating that Morgan had deceived her at her home in Alabama, and had tried to biast her good bame in this “elty, and that through him she had been dismissed from the Treasury department by the circulation of lies as to her reputation until the head of the pureau she was in was compeiled to take notice of it; that she was without friends or a home in this city, and that it was her intention to have taken her own lite had her shot ef the destroyer of her happiness proved fatal. This isprobably ee Lieut. Kelly took from her a vial contatn- ing three grains of morphine, which she said she intended to have swallowed had her shot been fatal to Morgan. She states that her father and Senator Morgan were law partners, were both officers in the rebel army, and were fast friends during her father’s life time at Selma. At this time she became acquainted with John Morgan, she being young and inex- perienced, and it was not one before they were engaged to be married; that he took advantage of her, and after betraying her, refused to keep his promise. In the meantime her father Gied, and she had no one to a eet to for rotection, and to vindicate her honor. Finding him firm in his purpose to cast her away she finally appealed to the law, and had him Indicted for luction, which case is still pending in Alabama.
