Mr. Tilden has announced that he Is a candl- date for the presidential nomination at the hands of his party, and this means that he will Spare no effort to win the prize he is seeking. ‘The announcement ts made through General Steedman, of Ohio, who interviewed Mr. Tilden afew days agoon the subject of his action in ‘the past and his desire for the future. When asked If he wasa candidate for renomination Mr. Tilden replied: “I amin the hands of the democratic party, and will cheerfully acquiesc in Its decision.” This “interview” w in all probability, a pre-arranged affair. General Steedman is a confidential friend of Tilden, and would not make public anything of the latter’s plans and purposes without his consent. In connection with the statement that he wants a rénomination the ex-governor defends himself against the charge of “cowardive” in having re- mained silent and inactive during the exciting dispute over the result of the election of 1876. This accusation was more potent than all Other causes combined in depriving Mr. Tilden Of the hold he had upon his party. It was said that he preferred rather to lose the presidency than run the risk of unsettling the value of United States bonds; that he was old and timid and could not be induced to take a single deter- mined stand or utter one manly word in favor of maintaining what it was claimed he had won; that when friends urged him to say or do something definite he evaded and put them off. Now he denies all this and proclaims that it was the fault of his party in Congress and not his own that he lost the presidency. The effect of ‘this defense by Mr. Tilden will be to strengthen ‘him in his party. This effect will grow, too, and it begins now to look, more than ever, as if Mr. Tilden will be his party’s candidate for the Presidency next year. ——_—_+-______ Among the newspaper changes at the opening of the year is that of the Richmond Dispatch, which has been sold by Messrs. Cowardin & Ellyson, its late proprietors, to “The Dispatch Company,” of which Mr. James A. Cowardin is i po LACE NOV pee OFF CLOSING OUT Py duos! OF OUR WINTER BARGAINS! St BARGAINS! The Baltimore Gazette yesterday reduced its subscription price to one cent per copy, or six cents per week, for the daily paper, and states that no other change will be made. This isa eduction of one-half its previous price. ——+ore-__ ‘The arrival of Mr. Parnell in this country makes pertinent the question, What do Ameri- cans intend to do for Ireland in her present dis- tress? Send them food for the hungry and cloth- ing for the desti ute, ts the sensible reply, and that is,perhaps, all that Americans can do. There is much suffering in Ireland. Want and misery are widespread, and those who are starving care more for something to eat than for “re- form of the land laws.” The American people are charitable and will contribute liberally to relieve the want in Ireland. After the hungry Shall have been fed it will be time perhaps to discuss questions of policy and reforms. The Starving men, women and children will not listen to such discussions now. —_—_—_--_____ ‘The imputation that the offer of the mission to Russia to Gov. Van Zandt grew out of politi- cal complications and personal ambition on the part of other prominent Rhode Islanders ts in- dignantly repelled by the Providence Journal. "That paper pronounces as “too weak even to be Yidiculous” the stories printed to that effect, and says that the offer of the place was un- Sought and unexpected by the Governor, and that it was, moreover, determined upon by the administration without the solicitation or knowledge of any member of the Rhode Island Celegation in Congress. +22 -—____ Now that both political parties have had their ‘turn at the counting out business, we suggest ‘that it be dropped at once and forevermore. ‘This thing of setting aside by legal technicality and trickery the will of the majority as clearly and unmistakably expressed through the ballot box isan exceedingly hazardous practice, and ‘One that can hardly fall to be alike damaging to ‘the party indulging in it and dangerous to the perpetuity of a republican form of government. Games are even now, and it will be better to op at that than to play a rubber for the odd Metory. The risk is eo ) erent for the stakes. ‘The Ricmond Sta tent taking a democratic view of the republican presidential canvass, thinks ‘that Secretary Sherman stands about the best show of nomination. It says: “President Hayes’ influence with the anti-stalwarts and the power ‘that the Secretary of the Treasury wields over @ large number of government oficials through- out the country, give strength that Mr. Blaine or Mr. Conkling may well envy. Next to Grant, the ‘strong man’ proper, there is no candidate so strong as Secretary Sherman. He may not be so popular as others, but he is more powerful. He has no magnetism, but he dbas the machinery.” ——___~--—_____. Yesterday was a pattern day for the com- ™mencement of the year, and it was perhaps more generally observed in Washington thanon any previous occasion. Notwithstanding the fact that everybody seemed to be calling or re- Celving, scarcely any intoxicated persons were Been on the streets. This satisfactory state of things was due largely, no doubt, to the fact That the beverages set out upon New Year tables were almost unifersally of the innocent Kind that “cheer but inebriate not.” ‘The cental system — substituting hundred ‘weights for bushels—went into operation in New York yesterday.
