WISE RELIEVED TO HAVE MET THE FATE OF DONALDSON, A telegram from St. Louts, Oct. 18° says: Prof. John Wise made an ascension in ns large balloon Pathfinder, from Lindell Park, on Sunday evening, intending to remain tn the air as long as the sustaining power of the batloon held out. The ascension was made solely in the interests of science, particularly meteor- ology. A brisk breeze was blowing when the fastenings were cut loose, which Carried the balloon in @ northerly direction for perhaps two miles, at an elevation of from 1.900 to Lest) foot It then turned due east and sailed away out of sight. Prof. Wise expected to enter what he calls a permanent eastern wind current at an elevation of about 1,500 to 2,000 feet, which he desired to keep in if possible and make observations; and to effect this more surely, his ballast consisted only of a three- quarter inch rope, 1,500 feet long, which trailed {rom the balloon.’ When the gas is exhausted the balloon was to descend, and the end of the TO} pods on the ground was to relieve the balloon of part of its weight and hold it ste: in the current. Geo. Burr, teller of the Louls National bank, who has made three as- censions and takes much interest tn the subject of air navigation, accompanied Prof. Wis tidings have yet been received of the rainnes abouts of Prof. Wise and nis companion, ant the opinion is growing very strong that they have met the same fate as Donaldson ani Grimwood, who ascended from Chicago two o three years eo ‘The balloon was new and ha | made only a few ascensions. The last was at Sierling, I, on the 19th ult., whea John Wise ir... @ grandson of Prof. Wise, reached an altl tude of over three miles and made a voyage 0. 1S miles. Prof. Wise 1s 71 years of aze, and ballooning with him has been a life study. He has made 462 successful voyages. Later dispatches say: It was the intention of Prof. Wise to stay up only a few hours. At Si in the afternoon the balloon passed over Alton, twelve or fifteen miles northeast of St Louis, sailing rapidly eastward and toward threatening clouas, in which it soon disa peared. On Monday morning a report came to the Giobe-Democrat office that a landing had been made in a thick forest uear Fort Wayne, Ind., but at 11:14 p.m. of Monday the panned was reported as passing over a point twen niles west of Laporte, Ind, a few miles south of Lake Michigan, and still drifting rapidiy the northward. On recetpt of thts news vine most gloomy conjectures were made concern- ing the fate of the aeronauts, and the deatn of Donaldson and his companion in the same lake four years ago was recalled.
