THE EVENING STAR. WABHINGTON. FRIDAY October 3, 1879. OBORRY & NOYVES.,... Editor. Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘The advertising columns of Tae Star con- tinue to be so crowded that In order to give its Teaders their quota of reading matter another Gouble-sheet will be issued te-morrow. Yes- terday there were 61 new advertisements en- croaching upon reading space. Advertisers and news dealers will please send in their orders as early as possible for the enlarged and extra edition. Late ordersremained unfulfilied last Saturday. The dead-lock in the New York police board ‘over the appointment pf a fourth inspector for each election poll remains unbroken. The board held two meetings yesterday, and the struggle was maintained with an equal show of determination on both sides. It is apparent now, that nothing short of a peremptory order of the court will bring about the appointment of the other inspectors. The democratic'mem- bers continued to submit lists of anti-Tam- manyites and the republicans just as regularly voted them down, stating emphatically that they would not vote for any but Tammany In- spectors unless compelled to do so by the court. Finally, at the meeting last night, the two re- publican commisstoners announced that they were tired of the farce of voting upon names that could not be agreed upon, and withdrew without the formality of an adjournment. Mayor Cooper notified the commissioners that, in consideration of the mandamus case pending before the supreme court, he had con- €luded to postpone his hearing of charges against the police board until Saturday at noon. He had cited them to appear before him yes- terday afterncon and show cause why they should not be removed for having neglected to perform their duty in the appointment of in- spectors. This postponement is regarded as a retreat by the mayor from his purpose to flank ‘the court. ‘The police commissioners appeared by counse) yesterday before the Supreme Court in answer to the order of Judge Barrett, granted the day before, directing them to show cause way a Mandamus should not issue to compel them to appoint the fourth election inspector for each voting precinct. Tammany hall was repre- sented by David Dudley Field and other promi- nent attorneys, and after some preliminary proceedings it was agreed to defer the hearing until Judge Davis (who was indisposed) could be present, and thus hold it before a full bench , It was expected that Judge Davis would be able to sit this (Friday) afternoon. The tm- pression among the lawyers, who were present in large numbers, seemed to be that in the end ‘Tammany would win by procuring a writ to compel the appointment of its inspectors. An election for public school directors ts being fought on a new tssue In St. Louis. Party lines “Raye been ignored in making nominations, and the qtestion of the contest is upon continulng or abolishing the teaching of German. The Globe-Democrat leads the move to abolish Gai man, and argues that it would save the tax- payers many thousands of dollars. In reply to an invitation from the republican committee of New York, to assist them in will give me great pleasure to do my utm: Aid of the election of Mr. Cornell and the re- publican ticket at the coming election, and I wish I could accept your invitation without Teserve.” In view of his engagements tn Ohio and his official duties, however, he could not make any more detinite reply than to say he hoped to be able to set aside two or three days about the middle of October for speeches in New York. Secretary Evarts is now in New York, and it is understood that ne will make at least one speech in behalf of Cornell and the Tepublican ticket. — Acommunication, signed “Many Citizens,” ‘Was addressed to Senator Blaine in Onto, the other day, inviting him toa joint discussion of the issues of the Ohio campaign with Gen. Sam Cary. The Senator has not yet replied to the letter, and in all probability will not, as the re- publicans say 1t was gotten up by the wily dem- ‘ocracy. : — The man who votes against his party in November is a traitor, and the man who does Lot vote at all {s a shirker, who ougnt to be deprived of the citizenship whose most im- portant duty he refuses to perform.—| Philadel phia Bulletin, ‘To which we trust some such paper as the Nation or Harper's Weekly will have the courage to rise and add that a convention which nomi- nates an unfit man for office is a lar and a horse-thief, and when it insists on his being blindly voted for by free and intelligent citizens it becomes a burglar and a bigamist. —_—_~+-_____. Is the street-sweeping contractor dead or has he retired on a fortune? He certainly has’nt been seen in the northern part of the city for a long time, and the streets,—M street, for in- Stance,—are in a disgracefully tilthy condition. It ts likely that Senator Conkling has been and may still be quite ill, though probably not ‘80 low as has been reported. It is likely, too, that bis congestive chill was the result of ma- larial poison in his system, as has been stated. But the volunteered opinion that his illness is attributable to the long session of Congress and the malarious atmosphere at the Capital, is the merest bosh. Washington 1s as tree from dis- ease and causes of disease as any other large city in the country. All talk to the contrary is less as it is mischievous. The latest estimate places the aggregate wheat crop, of the United Sjates, this year, At 440,000,000 Lushels, an Increase over last year ot 5 per cent. In round numbers 130,00,000 bushels can be exported without any danger whatever of trenching upon home needs. It is also estigiated that the European deficit will de 285,000,000 bushels, and the total supply from the United States and all other sources 23 000,000 bushels, leaving the supply 50,000,000 Dushels short of the demand. If these esti- mates be correct the price of wheat will very likely advance and hoid tts own. Indlan corn ‘Will also command a better price and good market, as the deficit in wheat must be mainly made up by this cereal. The indications are tha‘ the American farme-s will reap a larger Profit from their graiu tian was estimated in the earlier part of the season. eee The librarian of the New York Mercantile brary reports that the reading taste of the people ts undergoing a great change. He says that formerly four novels were called for to one standard work, but now the demand for the latter fs ahead. Ue thinks the days of novel reading are passed. Perhaps the quality of the thing to do with the declining interest noted. ‘The great novelists of the century have died leaving no successors. ——_$_---____. We are admonished by the Indian troubles td the appearance of some of our exchanges ‘that we are likely to have a season of news- paper war maps, so called. Ex- -Congressman Hewitt, of New York, is credited with having expressed the hope that Foster would be elected governor of Ohio by 40,0¢0 majority. Chairman McKloney, man- ager of the Ewing campaign, called upon Mr. Hewitt for a contribution of money to aid the democrats in Ohio. Mr. Hewitt replied that he ‘wouldn’t give a dollar to help elect a man who entertained such “dangerous” financial ideas as Ewing, and then added his hope of Foster's election. present product in the way of fiction has some- | F sts aw.
