THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: --April 11, 1879. OROSBY &. NOYES....Editor. otrowlation ad of all the other daily cavers im the city added together. The Candidates of 1880. A publication in the New York Times filling thirty-two columns of that paper of yesterday, im the shape of reporis of popular sentiment in nearly one thousand localities, distributed pretty evenly over the whole country, upon the tial candidates, is exciting much at- tention. The results, as summarized by the Times, “point unmistakably to the nomination of Gen. Grant by the republicans, and of Mr. ‘Tilden by the democrats. The vast preponder- ance of republican sentiment in favor of Gen. Grant leaves all other candidates hope- lessly in the rear. Many republicans who are personally opposed to his nomt- mation confess that his name is almost the only one mentioned in their vicinity.” ‘The figures in the estimate show that were the republican national convention to be held at once, Grant would receive the vote of every state except Maine, Nevad2, and Oregon, and possibly California. Out of the 157 points from which the Times’ advices have been received, Grant ts the expressed choice of 130, Blaine 10, and Messrs. Washburne, Sherman, Conkling, Ed@munds, and Chandler follow in the order named. The democrats in 9s of the 157 districts prefer Tilden; Thurman comes next with 23 dis- tricts, Bayard with 11, and Hendricks and Han- cock bring up the rear. Tilden, if the demo- cratic convention were held to-morrow, would besure of the votes of not less than 21 of the 38 states. As the Times declares unhesitatingly that Gen. Grant is neither its first nor its second choice, and that Tilden in its opinion Is the worst of the democratic candidates, its estimate of the state and tendency of public opinion in their favor may be considered as candid and in- telligent. The views of the 7imes, tt may be added, are sustained by the information re- ceived by members of Congress generally throughout the country as to the feeling in re- gard to the candidates for 1899. ———— or The visiting Virginia military company yes- terday to show that they had not the slightest disinclination to march under the Stars and ‘Stripes, not only carried a full sized specimen of the grand old flag in their parade to the wharf, but each individual member of the com- pany mounted a miniature flag upon his person. The handsome company looked all the hand- somer thus adorned with the beautiful emblem of the nation. ——_—_~+-—______ Peni McCormick, who managed the American department of the Paris Exposition with such exceptional success, makes some valuable suggestions to the N. Y. Tribune con- cerning the proposed Worid’s Fair in New York. In his opinion the year 1996 will be quite as soon as the Exhibition can be held with credit and success. If Germany should decide to have an Exhibition in 1335 it will not necessarily inter- fére with holding one in this country the fol- lowing year. It might, indeed, prove advanta- geous in affording an opportunity for European exhibitors to transfer their goods directly trom Berlin to New York. The site of the Exhi- bition, he says, should not be Central Park, mot only because of the serious inter- ference with the legitimate uses of the Park and the fact that it would require ten years to restore the parts occupied by the exhibition buildings to their former condition, but also because the park is by no means the best place for such buildings. A great desider- atum is a river front, where heavy pieces of machinery and bulky goods may be unloaded @irectly from vessels, and reloaded, thereby avoiding extra handling and terminal charges, which are usually high and very objectionable to exhibitors. Moreover, a water front and landing upon the East or North rivers would be &@ great accommodation to visitors who might come in steamers from many parts of New York, New Jersey and New England. To those persons who could spend but a day at the exhibition it would undoubtedly be a relief to eseape the delay, the cost and the inconvenience Of passing through the city. Governor McCormick makes various other suggestions in regard to the administration of the exhibition, the appointment of jurors, the Congressional action needed, &c., that merit attention coming from an authority of such experience. a ‘The law and precedents have been duly con- sidered, and sufficient democrats have voted for the admission of Mr. Bell as Senator from ‘New Hampshire to make the decision a non- ‘one, and to overrule the report against the applicant made by the democratic majority of the committee on elections. The amazement and surprise of the latter you may judge from the expression of their eyes. —————— ‘The struggie in the Pennsylvania legislature over the proposal to make the state pay four million dollars to cover the damages caused by the riots of 1877, instead of Allegheny county, where the burden ts now placed by state law, 1s a. close and desperate one. The consideration ‘Of the subject was indefinitely postponed by a ‘vote of 13 to 96, Duta motion to reconsider, made with the intention that it should be voted down, thus killing the scheme for the present session, was postponed for the present by ‘Vote of 100 to 99. The question is, consequently, not yet settled. Meanwhile the question of re- ity has been brought before the state and the United States courts for decision. At- tempts at bribery in connection with the bill before the legislature are alleged, and a com- mittee has been appointed to investigate the charges. Altogether Pennsylvania ts having a local excitement over an appropriation bill which is more interesting to the state than the legislation concerning appropriations at Wasb- ‘5, mal See a ‘The Cincinnati democrats are now examining through microscopes the naturalization papers of their republican mayor elect, and think they detect a flaw inthem. Attempts to invalidate the title to cMice of an Ohio man are historically unsuccessful. —_—___<o. __ ‘The Pennsylvania College of Veterinarians does not believe that contagious pleuro-pneu- monia exists around Philadelphia. Dr. Gadsden The Anglo-American Cable Company ts try- ing, anaconda-like, to swallow the new French Cable Company. The jatter does not have the appearance of an orga:tzation born to be swal- lowed, but the Angk nerican Company has had some experience in the itue of its present ef- forts, and can, at an emergency, develop great powers of absorption. The laying of a new and independent cable would, {t is thought, re- duce present rates more than one-half, as the business even at that scale of prices would be profitable. The capital of the new company ts about ten million dollars, and Is said to be guar- amteed by three of the strongest corporations in France. It tz proposed to lay two cables, one to Cape Cod, and the other to Nova Scotia, both by way of St. ft St. Pierre. Miss Julia E. Smith, the the only survivor of the Smith sisters, of Glastonbury, who refused to pay taxes without representation, has become @ blushing bride of eighty-seven summers. It seems to have been a long and doubtful strug- ie, but Miss Smith has in the end been com- acknowledge n pauses for a reply. ——--—— — to ‘the sway of the tyrant — + ICE ORE. {ee Restor Sunday. a0 1427 New York avenue. <oee oe _1471 New York avenue Rey apes, Pe UNI WERSAL, ee TER, Ww. ave. he ote - of the Inventor pasted o 3 Sone Be IC a dlica: mee sr che National Gopi ital. “A hand publication Bertier Sees ieee bound.
