TRUSTEE CasE—Snit of Quo Warranto by ex-Trustee Davis —To-day in the Court in General Term the case of the United States on the relation of B. P. Davis agt. W.J. Rhees, was ordered to be calendared for hear- ing at the present term. The stench complained of emanated from the tar composition works on B street, near 1ith, and was driven tothe jo. cality mentioned by the southwest wind then prevailing. It isan annoyance to the inhabi- tants of the southwestern part of the city whenever the works are in operation, and the wind 1s from the northwest; but while objec- tionable in some respects it is urged by the contractors, and apparently believed by the authorities, that it more than offsets this by its value as a disinfectant in this malarial season. The public is slow to accept this theory, how- ever, and would much rather see the objec- tionable works removed to a point where they — cease to be a nuisance to anybody iu any form. PARDON FOR SAMUEL A. PEUGH.—To-day a Pardon by the President was received by the marshal for Samuel A. Peugh, convicted in the Criminal Court on the 25th of May last, and sentenced to pay a fine of $100 and im: prisonment for six months in jail, for taking an unlawful fee for prosecuting a pension claim, and he was released accordingly. This sirixe one as Short sighted, unjust and partia! Wasi GHASTLY FREAK OF A ATIC.—A strange freak of a maniac occurred in South Canaan last Friday night. William Blodgett, son of Harvey Blodgett, and who has been deranged more or less for the past ten years, and has repeatedly been confined in the Middletown ‘lum, procured a shovel, aud proceeded to the cemetery, a short distance to the south of the village, with the design of ‘*resurrecting” his brotler Milan, who was buried there five ‘Aer ago. Hedugupthe coflin and opened it, revealing the sickening sight of the horrible ‘inning skeleton. He then went to Thomas jailey’s, a short distance off, aul procured a pitcher of milk, by the application of which the “resurrection” was to be accomplished. and remained all night, bathing the skull and other bones with the fluid. He was found in the morning still occupied and talking inco- herently to his ghastly patient. The town authorities have been notified, and proper measures will be taken for his safe confine- ment. Gazette tells this story: “At a camp meeting, when penitents were called upto be prayed for, an old reprobate ‘half-seas over, went to the altar. He was not satisfied with that, but requested the minister afterward to put up a special prayer in his be hail. He did so, and begged the Almighty to have mercy on Mr. White, as he well knew what a torn-down sinner he was: that he would get drunk and swear, and in fact break all the commandments: but as he was peni- tent, to forgive bim. The old sinner did not like to be so exposed in public, and on return- ing tohis seat met with a youns lawyer, who served to him that the p er had ruined his character, and that he ought to sue him for ‘defamation of character,’ and that he would undertake the case for half of what he recov- ered. It was carried to court and the preacher was fined $100,” 5 SHOT AND KiLLep.—A young man named Charles R. McBlair was shot and killed Tues- day at Shields’ l’oint, near Williamsburg, Va., ua a negro named Anderson Wilson, with whom he had a quarrel. The negro gave him self up, and claims that the shooting was done in self-defense. There were no witnesses of the occurrence. Forty-twe buckshot were found in McBlair’s left breast. The deceased was highly connected In the state of Mary- land. Since he has resided in Virginia he has been in very poor circumstances, and ob. tained a precarious sort of living by hunting ana fishing.
