Advertisers who wish to make for that issue any change in their announcements, as Standing at present, will please send in new copy for that purpose not later than Saturday One is liable to do an injustice in making She suggestion, since circumstances not visible om the surface may explain matters, but it does seem as if the way in which the ninety Cheyenne warriors, amounting with their families to not less than 400 persons, have been permitted to ravage the settled portions of Kansas and Nebraska is disereditable to our national police. Soon after the Iadians left the reservation the army authorities close at hand were informed of the fact. They nevertheless permitted the Indians to get nine hon s start. ‘The march of the rebellious band, which has not been checked has been marked by robbery, ravishment and murder. They have crossed the Union and Kansas Pacific railroad lines, which fact if properly acied upon, should, it Would seem, have been sufficient to ensure their close pursuit and capture. Bat plains ©f interception have been as unsuccessful as the sternechase. Neither state nor federal authorities seem to be able to Dring to punishment ninety raffians who are ravaging a well peopled section of the country, pierced by two great railroads. Asa conse: nee disaffected Indians in all quar- ters are beginning to feel encouraged. Some have become openly hostile and others have acted in a way to cause rumors of an impend- ‘ing War of serious proportions. If the Indian Durezu can be shown to have neglected its duties in the way of furnishing food which ‘was provided for by Congressional appropria- fion, then it must share the responsibility for this dcplorable condition of affairs with the army, which has, apparently, mismanaged the Cheyernes ever since they have violently transferred themselves to its supervision. The conference of believers in the personal pre-milennial advent of Christ. to be held in New York during the last two days of this month ard the first of the next, will attract Much attention. The purpose of the ministers who will then assemble will be to set forth in clear terms the ground of the hope which in- Spires them, and to give mutual encouraze- ment in the maintenance of what they believe to bea most vital truth for the present times. Similar gatherings have assembled In Eagland, and the movement has assumed large propor- tions within the past few years. Some of the foremost men in the church of England are among iis supporters. The call to the meet- ing in New York is signed by 11! ministers, many of them being men of acknowledged abiltty. The call sets forth that when from any cause some vital doctrine of God's word has fallen into neglect or suffered contradie- tion and reproach, it becomes the serious duty of these who hold it not only strongly and constantiy to reaflirm it but to seek by all meaps in their power to bring back the Lord's people to its apprehension aud acceptance. The doctrine of Cnrist’s second personal appearance is believed to have long lain under such nezlect and mis- apprehension. The sad decline in our times from the clear, vivid faith of the early church on this doctrine is pointed out. Very many Christians have been taught to think of the coming of Christ as equtvatent to their own death ; others regard it as synonymous with the gradual diffusion of Caristianity ; here and there are those who speak of such an event as a fascinating dream, never to be re ilizad. The conference will labor for a wi‘lespread revival of the ancient faith on the subject, as based on the scriptures, in which it is “strongly and constantly emphasized as a personal and imminent event, the great object of the ehureh’s hope, the powerful motive to holy living and watchful service, and the inspiring ground of confidence amid the sorrows and sins of the present evil world.” The collapse of the inflated balloon of green- Dbackism and a death-blow to the hopes of those Politicians who have aimed by concessions to profit by the supposed strength of the new Party, are the evident results of the Oztober elections. The decision of Onio is a victory primarily for hard money and secondarily for the republicans. Whether or not the latter party succeeds in making a tie in the Congres- sional delegation, the effect of its success in carrying the state ticket and in nearly neu- tralizing the democratic gerrymander will be felt in the November elections. Unless it is discovered that the democrats have control of the Congressional delegations from both Ohio and Indiana, greater encourazemsnt, therefore, will be taken by the republicans than by their opponents. But as far as abso- Jute gains are concerned in the important Points at issue the democrats have come out ahead, however short of their expectations they may have fallen. The poor showing made by the national party lessens the likeli- hood that there will be no popular choice in the next presidential election, and that the Vote will be thrown into the House. But in Such event the democratic control of the Congressional \iclegations from Ohio and In- diana would be fatal to the success of the republican candidate. It would bring the democrats within one of the twenty states mecessary for an election. The nineteen States controlled by them would be Ohio, In- diana, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Car. Olina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vir- ginia and West Virginia. And there would ra. main California, Connecticut and Nevada from which to draw the other vote. But it is not certain that the congressional delegation in either of the states under consideration will be democratic. The vote in Ohio may ba atie. The republicans must have a clear ma- jority in the Indiana delegation or lose the vote of the state. If they tie with the dem- Ocrats the thirteenth representative, who at present indications is a national, being elected by democratic votes, will decide iu favor of that party. Accurate news of the result in the congressional districts is consequently @waited with interest. ————<-e--_ Mr. Tilden’s chances for the next presidency Would seem to be represented by a cipher. The Ohio idea is discovered to be that Sena- tor Thurman’s prospects may be properly Fated at the same figure. —__$§_soo-—_____ It appears from the report for the year end- Ang September 28 that the yield of the mines in the Cumberland coal region was 1,167,610 tons, being an increase of 59,915 tons over that of last year. It is stated that accounts from other localities Indicate more or less increase over several years past in the supply of this fuel. Itisto the demand rather than tothe supply, however, that one must look first for of the prosperity or depression of the coal trade. Much of last year’s large pro- duet is stored waiting for the return of pay- ing prices, and much has been sold at an ac- tual loss. ——__—__-see.__ The curious agricultural fact is laid before the public that the production known as the “Ohio idea” flourishes better when trans- Planted in a cold climate, such as that of Maine, than upon its natiye heath, tor of BATES BGs rata sccrifice, A.
