October 10, 1875. The Rev. Mr. Hayden in Ja: REARRESTED ON A BENCH WARKANT ON CHARGE OF MURDERING MARY STANNARD. A telegram from New Haven, Oct. 5, says: The Rev. Herbert H. Hayden, of Mailtsoa, charged with the murder of Mary S'annard, who has of late been at large with a Scotch verdict of “not proven” hanging over his head. was rearrested to-day by on a bench warrant sworn out by State’s At torney 0. H. ‘tt, and issued by Judge Hitch- cock, of the Supeiior Court. Sheriff Byxbee left New Haven on the 3:27 train this afier- noon, went to Guilford, hired a team and drove to South Madison, where since the preliminary hearing, the Rev. Mr. Hayden has resided. On arriving at that little town the Sheriff drove to Mr. Baveen 's house, where he found him with his wife and three small children. Sherifl Byxbee called the reverend gentleman aside and informed him of the nature of his visit, Hayden's cool, collected manner, so notice able at the former trial, stood him in good stead, and he was apparently the more unconcerned one of the two. He told his wife of the visitor's errand, and she was entirely overcome and gave way to her feelings unre- servedly. Hayden went to his room, packed a yalise with some necessaries, and informed the sheriff of his readiness to accompany him. There was a sad ing with the wife, who loves her husband so devotedly and who has clung to bim so tenderly since his first arrest, and he was allowed a few parting words with her and his children in secret. To the sheriff he said the arrest was not ees) eye unex- pected. A few friends were notified, and they assembled at the depot and bade him good-by as the 6:33 train left the depot, strongiy assert- ing their belief in his innocence. Among the party was Justice Wilcox, who presided at the reli gor hearing; Wm. Minor, who had ¢n one of the pastor's Keepers after his first arrest, and other promiaent citizens of the town. The sheriff and tesa took seats in the sae car, and during the ride to New Haven Mr. Hayden talked about everything except the one thing that he would be sup- osed to talk of—the murder. The arrest was Kept as quiet as gta and but few passen- gers Knew that Mr. Hayden was on the train. On arriving at New Haven the two got intoa hack and went to the county jail, Mr. Hayden retaining the unconcerned and indifferent manner he assumes so well. On arriving at the jail office the prisoner entered, deposited his valise near the clerk's desk, walked over to the water tank and took a glassof ice water. He looked about the office, remarked that it was not a particularly unpleasant place so far, and satdown. As he did so, he glanced at the Latin inscription over the door leading to the prison, which is: “Dum spiro s "0 and turning to Cierk Birdsey, said: * What does that mean?” Mr. Birdsey replied: “ While there is life there is hope.” Mr. Hayden smiled and said: “That's so,” and nodded his head, signifying his readiness to be locked up. He was taken to his cell in the main room, and at 10 was fast asleep. He was ealm, cool and col- lected all the while, and exhibited no emotion whatever. He will be brought before the su- perior court to-morrow morning. Mr. Hayden refuses to talk with any one. It is understood that the state's attorney has S overed new evidence, but refuses to say What. eri Byxbee, A Henore Girt—A Child Saves Her Futher from Highwaymen.—George H. Dyring, who lives about six miles out on the Grand River road, tells the following story of Miss Anna Brown, his niece, who is but ten years old: Oa Saturday night Miss Brown, with her father, ft this city to drive home in a light wagon drawn by one horse. Mr. Brown has been an invalid for two or three years, and is very weak and unable to resist an assault. They had driven about a mile beyond the toll gate, the father holding the reins, when two men ey jumped to the head of the horse and stopped him, after which one of them Gy | back and informed Mr. Brown that if he had any money or other valuables he would do weil to produce them. Mr. Brown explained that he was a poor man and had no money, and begged them to let him proceed unharmed. By this time the second highwayman had left the head of the horse and joined his com- panion, and both were badgering Mr. Brown, telling him that it was useless to affect great physical weakness and poverty, for he must “shell out.” Meanwhile the girl had gained possessson of the whip, and at this point she suddenly seized the reins and, with the heavy butt end of the whip, knocked one of the rob- bers down, while she dealt the other a severe iow. Then, giving the wnt to the horse, she succeeded in driving herself and father out of reach of the robbers and beyo danger, although one of the highwaymen discharged a puto t the flying couple.—{ Detroit I’.ee Press, BoB INGERSOLL 0! INFLATION.—We have agnificent inflition. Years some ) miles of railroad, and in order to build that we have spent about $5,000,00,000, Well, there was work for everybody. We had everything growing, and there was prosperity all over the land. Everybody worked for everybody— everybedy wanted to employ somebody eise. In the meantime the war came upon our hards, and in that we spent $10,00,000,000, What for? To build up? No; to tear down and destroy. Every single, solitary dollar that was spent was wasted by us. But, asa matter of fact, we didn’t spend the moaey— we only agreed to. We scattered all over the country ceitain notes which we agreed to pay, and we have not got them paid yet. In my judgment it did not take as much patriotism to put down the rebellion as it will take to pay vhe debt. A man can be brave fora few min- utes when he is — in the line of battle, and when he looks and sees that nobody else runs. It is comparatively easy to die for a SroeDle. But it is mighty hard to live for it. It is hard work to at ‘up at 4 o'clock in the morning and work until the sun goes down, and do that for a life.—[Ingersoll’s Speech at York, Fair. ROMANCE.—Mr. Stephen Goodrich, of New York, for several months past has been paying attention to Jennie, the pretty eighteen years old daughter of Mr. Conroy, of Avenue C. Bayonne. The young woman's parents did everything they could to prevent a possible marriage of Goodrich and their daughter, and finally sent their daughter toa boarding school. On Saturday she appeared in her father's store in New York and informed him that she was married. She had not been to boarding school, but on the day she started from home she met her lover and was married. Since then she ‘as San living with her mother-in law. THE SILVER Lake MURDER MYSTERY.— The late residence of Edward Reinhart, on Staten Island, N.J., was searched foanaay. and a small inger ring was found and identified as belonging to Mary Ann Kegan, who has been missing over three months. A package of letters was also found of a very compromising character. The body lately found at Silver Lake, Staten Island, tis sup- posed to be that of Miss Kegan. "Pauline Dettman, Reinhart’s last wife, assisted in the search of the house. Mrs. Herborn, his land- lady, testified that Miss — peppers on the 20th of July, that Reinhart said she had gone to visit her mother, and that the prisoner soon afterward left the house wheeling a barrel, which he at one time said contained crockery and at another iron, up the Rich- mond road. It is suspected that this barrel contained the body of the woman Kegan. Reiphart, who has been recently married, de- clares that Mary Kegan is alive in New York, and can be produced. Kv-KLUK IN Ont0.—The citizens of Green- ville and the county of Darke, Ohio, are in- tensely excited over the act of an armed mob Monday night. Some time ago, because of much stealing in Darke county, Stephen Wade, @ respectable colored man, and his three sons, were warned to leave the county. Monday night thirty masked men on horseback rode » to Wade's house, called him out, and as he af tempted to escape, riddled him with bullets. His three sons were away from home, other- wise they would have shared his fate. About @ year ago these self-styled vigilants killed a fea i ieee thief in Palestine, ‘ke county, while he was standing by his wife's side.
