This fact is apt to be overlooked in the excitement of conflicting hopes and fears which precede tomorrow's struggle in Ohio and Indiana. The chances are that both West Virginia and Iowa will return solid democratic and republican delegations, respectively, to Congress. There is more prospect, however, of a revoiution in the latter than in the former State. It is possible, bnt hardly probabm, that the fusion of greenbackers and demverats may cause Iowa to follow the example of Maire. i ‘can platform is for honest money and opposes the payment of “rebel claims.”’ ‘The efforts of the democrats to reopen the Presidential question are denounce: ‘das “dan- The vors the uncon:itional repeal of the resumption act, and the substita- tion of greenbacks for national bank notes. fraud” investigations are approved, The greenback platform is of the usual kind. In Ohio the confusion and uncertainty in respect to the result inerease as election da: draws near. Both republicans and democrats confess their inability to estimate the national vote with any accuracy, the figures ranging from 20,000 to 1€0,000. But it is proved by each side beyord the shadow of a doubt that its opponent will be defeated by desertions to the nationals. With the prestige of last year’s victory in their favor, and through the coa- cessions which they have mads to greeabacit- ism, the democrats would seem to have the advantage; but Ohio is a geod state for sur- prises. The republican platform, which was adopted last June, opposes further agitation of the financial question as injurious to busi- ness and devoid of other than evil resuits. The movement to reopen the Presidential question is declared to have been revolution- ary and calculated to Mexicanize the affairs of the country. The aetion of the last legisiature in redistricting the state is condemned as out- Yageous and unjust. The democratic plat form contains a “fraud” plank, and charges the commercial depression to the republicans. At favors the absolute repeal of the resumption act, the free coinage of silver, and the substi- tution of greenbacks for national bank notes. The greenback and prohibition platforms are in the usual form. In Indiana the condition of affiirs is about the same. In the last legislature the repubii- cans had a majority of six on joint ballot, the congressional delegation is composed of nine republicans and four democrats, and in 1876 in the presidential vote the state gave ademo- eratie majority of 5,515. The republican plat- form opposes all kinds of subsidies, repudia- tion in all its forms, and any abandonment or depreciation of the greenback currency; favors “a sound and stable currency of gold, silver and paper of the same value;” and op- poses “further financial agitation. stability in our financial system belng essential to busi neas prosperity.” “The action of the demo- cratic House of Representatives in demanding the payment of over $200,000,00 of rebei claims” is denounced as‘‘a conspiracy agains: the government, less open but not less danger ous than armed rebellion.” The platform als declares that there can be no appeal from th decision of the electoral commission exept by revolution. In the President’s personal integrity, as well as the general course of his administration, the platform recognizes “the guarantee that he will conduct tho govern- ment so as to preserve the honor and pro mote the happiness of the whole couatry.”” The democratic platform favors the substitu- tion of legal-tender greenbacks for national bank notes, the “taxation by the states of the United States notes in common with all other money,” the restoration of the silver dollar, and the unconditional repeal of the resump- tion act. Any further legislation for funding the national debt abroad is opposed. The de- cision of the electoral commission is held up “as the monster crime of the age.” The na- tional greenback-labor reform platform is drawn up after the same pattern as in the other states. The importance of to-morrow’s elections af- fecting not only the control of these states, bat of those which elect in Noyember, and of Con- gress and of the Presidency, is fully appreci- ated by the politicians; and the wearing ex- eitement which is said to shorten the lives of Statesmen, will have full play until Wednes- day sets all doubt at rest. It iscuggested that, in justice to the People who have so generously come to the relief of the yellow fever sufferers, the Howard As3o- ciation of New Orleans make a report to the mayor of that city showing the amount of money «nd supplies received, and the amount expended and distributed. It is clalmed that this wouid satisfy doubts and put at rest sus- Picions inspired by the conflicting dispatches and reports—some of the latter oflicial—which come from the south as tothe use of the money and supplies by the Howards Such a course Would also preyent a threatened cessation of supplies. toon The police authorities of Paris act with ad mirable severity in the attempt to repress the toy-pistol nuisance. Not only is the Parisian small boy, whose heart delights in the explo- sion of gunpowder, watched with care, but the very sale of toy pistols with enplosive com. pounds is probibited. In our air of freedom it would not do, perhaps, to go so far as this; but in view of the many painful accidents which would be thus prevented, one might | almost wish that the traffic in toy pistols, to Say nothing of tin horns and other instru- ments of torture, were regulated on despotic Principles. In this respect, at least, a strong government is desirable. The tramp’s forte is to live without working, to trudge along dusty roads, and to frighten ‘Women and children. Asa belligerent he isa conspicuous failure. Ina recent engagement at Akron, Ohio, between thirty tramps and a militia company, all of the former fled igno- miniously except those who surrendered at Giscretion. They paid the penalty of over- ‘Stepping the lines that define the tramp’s true sphere. _—_—_—_—_—— 12 m., until WED- DOUGLASS & BRO., 9th and F sts, M4*.nis xp evove DEPOT, 929 PENNSYLVANIA Ave, (One door east of Mitchell's @ Martia’s.)
