LIVELY CAMPAIGN IN CINCINNATI.—A spe cial dispatch to the New York Times from Cincinnati, October 3d, says:—The campaign in the first congressional district is growing interesting. For the first few weeks Milton Sayler feli so sure of election that he did but little work. Major Butterwortn’s brilliant can- tion, and a few days past Sayler and _his friends been thoroughly alarmed. ‘To check the ng Strength of Butterworth, the two have been secured and eres vever, has altered the sit ve growi jeading German papeis their columns filed w low attacks. 0. charge, industriousiy circulated among the Germans, is that Butterworth, when in tl state senate several years ago, favored legis ‘ation in the interests of temperance. Another | attack, printed in the Vo jreund to-day, charges him with dishonesty in connection with the payment of war eldims. In reply to this, Masor Butterworth has precured a. war- rant for the arrest of Evitor Haacke on a charge of criminal litel, aud will also bring a civil suit against the paper. The charges are outrageously false, and are fully explained by Mr. Butterworth. He has lived in this city since he was a child, and is known to ever body as a man of the highest personal ehara ter. There is no doubt that Sayier, by inst gating this method of warfare, will lose more votes than he will gain. He has represented the first district six years, and the prospect of his defeatis very distressing to the democracy. Dip COURTNEY SELL THE RACE?—A dis- patch from a leading sporting man at Auburn, N.Y., is to the effect that the most intense feeling exists in that city ae Courtney, the oarsman, as they believe he sold the race with Hanlon at Lachine on Thursday. A lar, number congregated, and it was proposed by some to drive Courtney out of the town when he should return home. Edward B. Rankin, Who acted as judge for Courtney, publishes a letter, in which he says: “I venture the judg- ment now that Courtney is the better and more enduring sculler of the two; that pee the roughness of the water he succeeded, when- ever he made the effort, in closing with Han- Jon, and that at the finish he rowed the Toron- to man and lost the race _by ceasing to pull at the critical moment when nearing the goal. Had he continued rowing and hauled out into the course, instead of resting on his oars, the race was hisown. It seems incredible that a man of Courtney's intelligence shovid be so far lost to pride and the interests of friends as to lose the race intentionally, and until some- thing definite in the uature of fairness is de- veloped, it is only just to hope and believe that the race was lost through an error of -udgment.” MISCEGENATION PROHILITED BY VIRGINIA Laws.—The supreme court of appeals of Vi - Dies has decided an important case, estab- sishing the social status of the negro in Vir- ia with ears to marriage. Judge Chris- Wan delivered the opinion of the court. It Was held that a marriage between a negro and @ white woman domiciled in the state who Went into the District of Columbia and were there married ard returned to the state, was 8 Marriage so celebrated coul not be pleaded in bar of criminal prosecution against the parties for lewd and lascivious co- habitation.
