Smith, Lollector of Custome here, 1or an official report upun the actusl extent of suflering, of the reltel on hand, and the naturo and extent of the rellef indispensable. The re- port at length han just been forwarded by mail. It mnay be given In substance ss follows: A meeting has becn held of the representatives of the thirty charitable associations, coustituents of the New Orleans Rellef Commitiee. They met to consider the situation, the necessitics of tho peuple of New Oricans, and the extent and means of relief on hand and available. The great mejority of Associations reported thelr means of relief exhausted. A portion reported means sdequate to the demands of a very few days. ‘The Young Men's Christian Association, the best provided of all, reported efglt or unine dasa' supply. These gentlemen wers of the oplnfon that TUE MEANS OF THR HOYARDS had been overrated; that, when tho Howards said they had funds sufficlent, the Assoctation shared the popuiar betief that the epidemic was declining, and would by this date be practically extinct, and that, Io view of the present in- crease of mortality snd cases, and the present prospact of = continuance of the cpidemic for another month at lcast, the funds of the Howards werg not adequate, even to the requirements of their ppeciul work. Whether this opinton bo well or {ll-founded, it Is evident that th= How- ards do not intend ta divert ony portlon of their fund from the care and medicine of the sick, and that the people of New Orleans do not expect them to do so.
