The discovery of rich ore at a great depth in the Sierra Nevada mine on the Comstock lode has caused a new outbreak of the mining fever in California, and there are indications that the craze for gambling in stocks, which had neatly died out in the state, will be again Fevived in its wildest forms. A period of extensive speculation, of large dividends and of quickly-won wealth will soon give way to an era of collapsing fortunes and of profound distrust in all men. In the latter stage it wili be discovered that a few crafty spzeulators have absorbed the money set afloat, leaving expectant millionaires with empty pockets. Such manias throttle healthy trade in the State, and in their consequences seriousiy inj its business interest: Why 1s i that none of the inflation. cratic newspapers have charged the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank and the failures which followed it in Great Britain to Secretary Sherman and his resumption policy? As governor, representatives in Congress, 2nd a Tegislature which will choose a United States Senator, are involved in the election, the ex- tent of the revolution, of whose approach there are indications, is of importance. It is not considered unlikely that the third party, the organized dissatisfaction in the state, will have sufticient strength to cost the republi- caps the loss of the legislature, which decides the Senatorship, and, in the absence of a majority for any candidate in the popular Vote, will select state officers as well.
