The Burning Mane at Pittston. A correspondent of the Boston Adrertiser hus deseribes the burning mine at Pittston, Pa.: Close by and in plain sight from the Con tral railroad of New Sersey, & mile or so from the Lebigh Valley and the Delaware, Lacka and Western railroads, and fast out the dorough of Pittston (an anthracite .) a large amount nes has been on fire fo. @ Year or more. The rule in coal lands is 2 to.S of coalto one acre of one foot {hickness of foal, about twenty-five acres of nd containing the fourteen foot vein (70)! tons,) out of which two-thirds of the coai have been taken, is already burnt. and as much more Wi consumed before this fire reaches the “‘eut-off.” Charles F. Conrad, a skillful engineer, at_the probable cost ‘of #0, began last February the work of ae, off the fire. aud has by this time, artly by tunnel and open cut—in allover 1,00) eet long, 20 feet wide and 60 feet at the deep- est point—rescued the remainder of this coal property from destruction unless the projected work proves a failure and the fire crosses the “eut,” in which event it ean be stopped at no other point for ten times the cost of the pres: ent plan. Extinguishing such fires by injeot- ing steam into a shaft or tunnel is not feasivie here, as the surface is broken 7. penings through which the air circulates 3 and the other mode, of Sooding. being impossible from the elevated site of the land. As one waiks up and down thrs cut he has before him a fine exhibition ol the coal and rock as it lies in its natural deposit, with an unusual dispiay of impressions of ferns and a thousand other antedeluvian plants. The fire originated in the wooden props and coal pillars or supports of an abandoned part of the mines—the temporary retreat of an ohi Woinan—and has spread in a horse shoe shape within 500 feet of the “cut off,” and has burn to fine ashes earth, rock, slate and coal, where. air could feed the fire. Exeep: this nothing could hinder the fire from co: suming the entire coal bed for a distance of 15 mules southward down the Susquehanna river, and ‘eed under it, where coal is now being actu mined hundreds of feet beneath the very bedof the river. This 1i-foot vein is di- vided in halves by six inches of Slate, and in a fire of 20 years ago in the same property this strip of siate, where no air could circulate, found burned to ashes for quite a distance, while the coal above and below the slate be seen unscorched and as bright and clear asthe purest of anthracite. It’ may be that anthracite coal has less gas than slate, but whatever is the explanation it is hoped that this mysterious cremation may go on till the eutire Slate is eliminated from these coal beds. Standing on the top of this cut one looks out on a spectacle to be seen nowhere on the face of the globe. Much larger than half of Boston Common this burnt district stretches away, dotted over with caves and pits, caused in part by stripping the coal supports and partly by the fire beneath, and seuds forth rom every direction at night jets of bine flame like burning aleohol, and in the day the atmosphere is in such fierce and incessant motion as to be painful to the eye. I stood icokingin'oone of the openings while the wind Was blowing from me, and saw solid rock red hot, or burnt to fine ashes. For a moment the wind ¢ ged, and I was forthwith enveloped in hot, stif ng air and sulphurous smells, hiss- ing sounds, hobgoblins and apparitions “in a way I despise” Last winter the line of fire Was marked with utmost distinctness by surroundivg snows coming up to the very edge, and inclosing the large area of dry and a vegetation. Milton has imaginary de. scriptions of this earth, which, he thought, he had sketched more inimitably than would ever be found after regular formation should take the place of chaos. No doubt the great poet succeeded, and yet a stranger cannot enter one of the underground countries in these anthracite coal fields with now and then an “‘air-hole” glimmering, without realizing with some nearness of resemblance that poet's description of this earth as Satan first saw it:— Dark wasie and wild, under the frown of night, Starless exposed, which, from the wall of heaven, Save on that si Some small refiection gains of glimmmeriag air. Sure we are if the most skeptical of the an- cients could be summoned from his tong sleep and taken around this burning abyss he would think they were not so allegorical in his day after all.” The heathen mythologies would grow are apr he would realize the Grecian picture of the world of spirits from which his nfidelity had left him n0 eseape—not the Ely- sian fields, where the air was wholesome, se- rene and temperate, but the veritable Tarta- rus assigned to wicked spirits. We were won to read over the story or the Creton labyrinth, with its winding passages and intricate con- struction, but, though fabulous, how vastly be- low in extent,'in purpose and results to these labyrinths in the anthracite coal fields over which the inhabitants of coal towns walk daily in all the reality of fact. No tourist whose way takes him throng Wyoming gs J for the | first time should fail to stop at the birthplace of the black diamonds, and go into one of those subterranean workshops and take a look at this burning mine. A Woman Swimming Twenty Miles. Miss Beckwith accomplished the task yes- terday of swimming 20 miles in the Thames, and it was stated that the feat was not per: formed for a wager, but to encourage ladies in the artof natation. The start from West- minster was fixed for noon, but it did not take place until 26 minutes later, by which time several thousand spectators had gathered on the bridge and the Victoria embankment. As soon as the young lady, attired in an orange- colored costume appeared on the steamer which was tu accompany her, she was greeted with cheers, and the cheeriug was repeated when she dived into the water. She was fol- lowed on the journey bya boat containing Protessor Beckwith and his son Willie, the champion of London. She swam In the middle of the stream, with along, powertul breast- stroke, and reached Lambeth bridge in 9 min- utes. Battersea bridge was pace in 54 min- utes and Chelsea in 47m., while the distance covered in the first hour was about three and a quarter miles. Going merrily along, the swim- me~ was off Wardsworth in Th. 15m., and Pu: ney, five and a half miles from home, in 1h. Sim. She continued the same measured stroke, and in 2h. 9m. passed Hammersmith b idge, where a large crowd encour: er efforts with a cheer The ship at Mortlake being reached, nearly half the journey was riormed in a little less than three hours. ew bridge, 11 miles, was shot under in 28m. from the start, and then for the first time some refreshment was partaken of. At 5 o’c'ock Richmond was sighted, and a short distance beyond this pleasant resort a turn home, the young lady not exhib. ‘he slightest 3m ms of fatigue. The journey back to rker’s Rails, Mortlake, where the twenty miles were completed, was ag Hagia nia mishap, and Miss Beck- wish, far from being exhausted, was taken into the steamer amid hearty manifestations of satisfaction, having been in the water six hours and tweutyfive minutes.—{ London Tekgraph. Du THE ECLIPsE the Pueblo Indians of Taes, M., were much agitated. The chief- tain of the village came forth in great excite ment and declared that some oue had com- mitted a great sin and the destruction of the village was imminent—or, at least, the ex- tinction of the sun. Three trusted messengers were therefore sent at once te the priests to conjure tiem to keep the eternal fire on the aitar burning at its brightest while all the wo- men of the village were ordered to strip them- selves nuked and run in pairs round the race course whese the foot races take piace. Thanks to thes ae precautions the eclipse seon passed off. The custom of having the women run these races in a nude state is uni- versal with the Pueblos on occasions of this kind. They have a tradition that Montezuma was betrayed into the hands of the Spaniards by his daughter, and it is thought probable that the requiring of the females to humiliate themselves as penance for the original crime committed by one of their sex against this ys out of the tradition. dignitary gro CssTs FROM Livinc ForMs.—I was taken by a Giend to see the wonderful plaster casts of living human beings, which are among the cu- rigsilies of the Russian ee a How the thing is done it is Impossible to imagine, but there the two statues are, ‘um bent female gures undoubtedly taken from living women. One lies slightly tarned upon her side, her lips parted in a smile, as though she was striving io sunpress a iaugh. The other, who has muc! the finest form of the two, lies face downward, her feet crossed and her head pillowed on her folded arms, as though she thrown herself cown to sleep. The minutest details of the texture of the skin, nails, &c., are very per- fectly reproduced, the “goose-flesh” wherc with the skin is covered being amazingly no- ticeable, and showing that the preparation used for these casts, the _—— ion whereof is a secret, must be applied cold. Then ali the Little indentations in the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands, and the eurve of the nails and their rimming of skin and flesh are reproduced with even startling accuracy. The process by which these figures are produced Is still a secret. but it is certainly a wonderful and cwious discovery.—{ Paris Correspond- ence Phila. Telegraph.
