Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being a much larger bona fide, regular and permanent circulation than that of all the other daily papers in the city added together The Bevelepment of the National y- The national party in Pennsylvania, which developed such unexpected strength at the last election in that state, casting over 50,000 yotes, has now arranged its line of battle for anew campaign. and hopes. with the nomi. nees and platform which were chosen yester- day, to treble its November vote. Whether or not it has rated its strength too high, there is little doubt that it will hold the balance of | power in the Legislature, and decide Don Cameron's successor in the United States Sen- ate. Its power will also be felt in the other elections, by which a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of Internal Affairs, and a Supreme Judge will be chosen. The contest in the triangular fight for these offices will be exciting, and its result cannot be predicted with | anycertainty. H. Armstrong and Hendrick B. Wright— the representatives of the modera treme branches, pectiveiy, were dens by opposing delegates, the former as a repub- liean, the latter as a democrat, and 5. R. Mason, the * Father of the creenback party in western Pennsylvania,” carried off the nomi- nation. The principal planks in the platform adopted are government aid to persons set- ting on publie lands, rigid economy in the administration of public affairs, the eight hour system of labor, a graduated income tax, a protective tariff, equal civil and political rights te Women, and a national paper money. The republicans will make their nominations on the Hth and the democrats on the 221. After these moves for position, will come the real battle, and if promises to be an interest- ing one The District people express themselves as satisfied in the main with the Distriet govern ment bill passed by the House. The provision for an elective council, is, perhaps, the one about which they are the least enthusiastic, as involving a large cost for registering and vot- ing. with very little returns in the way of any effectiv reise of the ballot: but they are quite willing to accept this feature and try nd make the best of it, if they can at the t relief from some of the colossal burdens under whieh they e how ting. They will dotueir best to make the provision a success by securing so far as they ean good intelligent men for {he souneil. In view of the past, there may be some doubt whether they may not be swamped in that effort: but at least the trial will be made in good faith, and if it should fail, and the resut | be a “feather-duster” council. why Congress cant its suffrage action in the light of experience. The fact that the House is about to enter upon an investigation of the alleged eleetora- frauds in Florida creates no excitement, and it is evident that no one, with the possible ex. ception of Montgomery Biair, expects that inquiry will amount te anything more than tosupply a little camp capital for the next Presidential election. In the opi ef some of the shrewdest of the democratic leaders, it will fail to secure even this fruit if pushed at this time, for the reason that the mat er will be stale, flat and unprofitable lon before 15~). It is certain that the level-headed demoerats will not be betrayed into any scheme for un- seating Hayes as the result of the investi tion, for they know well ‘hat the alarm and business disturbances ereated throughout the country by any movement of this kind would be fatal to the party attempting it. The Amer- ican people doubtless have their own opinion of the manner in which the elections we carried in Florida, Louisiana and some o‘her southern states, but they hold that Mr. Hayes has been seated in the Presidential chair by the action of the two houses of Congress, and that any attempt to disp'ace him now would be Mexicanizing our rule in a way they do not propose to tolerate. A paragraph in this paper, giving the fiz ures to show the rather curious fact that those sections of the country which were loudest in their demand for the passage of the silver bill take least kindly tothe silver dollar, caused the Repuhlicun to remark in arather lofty Way that the Stax is only a local paper, and doesn't know much about matters of ** gen- eralconcernment,” anyhow. We haven't space or inclination for carping upon the manage- ment of our cotemporaries, bul will, for just once, pause to inquire if the Reprlican’s Statement to-day that “Judge Field was not a member of the Electoral Commission,” is in- tended to illustrate its immense fitness to deal intelligently with “questions of general con- cernment All is not harmonious in the camp of the California workingmen’s party. The state and county committees have denounced the irre- pressible Kearney, and declared him to be outside of the party: Kearney, undismayed, denounces the committees in turn, asserts thaf he is the true and orthodox party, and proceeds to read the committees out of the party ranks. The voice of the people has not yet been heard. eee ‘The platform of the national party is not ap parently very communistie: in fact, it will take some time for that wrinkle to grow npou the horn of the practical American working man. ———~ore.
