FEARFUL STATE OF SOCIETY IN SOUTH RUSSIA AND POLAND. Crime is increasing to such a frightful ex tentin South Russia and Poland that it has been humorously suggesied to siart an insur. ance society against assassination. Nobody in the Polish cities cares to leave home after nightfall, and in spite of rigorous police regu lations to the contrary, people carry about with them revolvers and lite preservers. In two well-known Russian townas—Khar. K the seat of a university, and Riazam, the e chosen the residence of Osman i—there have been lately two foul and stardly murders. At the latter town a Mr. sen berg, ilor Of state, was fo: ug dead in a forest with a revolver bulle s body; and at Kharkoff Dr. holdin, i the room of a hotel with his head split down. to the very chin with a chopper. On the Saturday before Christmas the doc. lor Was summoned to the hotel to attend a patient. Not returning home that day, in quiries were made for him at the hotel, when it was learned that the stranger had gone invo the country for a day or two, and had told t waiter that the doctor, whom he Was to meet in the town, would ny him in his ex cursion, eemed provable enougl ried a miles from ing Wore When, howeve: third day came aud went without any t being received of the missing gentleim ae police were appealed to, and they, like’ ti doctor's family, commenced th Ss at the hotel. The str: Yy, and his room was still close taken the keys with him. After a short deliberation the door was broken open, and the the police sa i ful spectacle — Doctor Kovalchu: stretched on the floor with a peas: per sticking in his severed head, From a vial he held tightly in his hand it was p! eater that the unfortunate physi been engaged pouri! out some medi his patient, when the ee anim mensely muscular man—had dealt him the terrible blow which had killed himon the spot. The blow was so accurately delivered that death had been instantaneous, and the murderer, letting go the weapon which had fastened in the wound, had caught and low. ered the body to the floor without the slighiest noise or scuffle being heard. Then appropri- ating his victim's purse, and his gold wateh studded with brilliants, he had quietly walked away from the hotel as though nothing had Bappenied, A strong impression prevails that both these murders were committed by the emissaries of seeret socteties, to whose machinations are ascribed the whole, if not more, of the in- crease of crime shat has taken place since the army left Russia. ing such wonderful stories of plots and plans for the annihilation of society which has come to light during the last few days in connection with the Ninilist trial, it is not surprising to find this belief so prevalent. The European Situation ¢: awa d, he having tle: . urg telegraphs as follews: “I can state positively that orders have been sent to the Russian troops to eater Constantinople. Count Schouvalaff has been ordered to expiain to Lord Derby that as the great powers have determined to send their fleets to Constanti- nople, Russia is obliged to adopt similar meas- sures, but Russia has no intention of aggra- valting the situation.” THE BRITISH FLEET TO PROCEED. The Times in its leading article says a tion of the British fleet will proceed to Con- stantinople. That is unavoidable after what S$ occurred. The leader points out that d Derby emphasized his statement that the other powers may not consider it necessary to avail themselves of firmans for the admission of their fleets, although they had applied for them. It is possible, therefore, that tue Brit- ish and Russians alone may be present at Con- staptinople. Such a position would be one of the gravest anxiety. Everything may turn upon the character of the Russian occupation. A mere demonstrative occupation, as that of Paris in 1870, eught not to be regarded as alarming, but an occupation in force, with no apparent limitin poiut of time, would throw upon our government a very grave responsi bility. The moment is one at which a few hasty words or a single-hasty act might pre- cipitate a conflict. The government have laid down certain limits beyond which we cannot remain indifferent to the advance of Russia. If these limits are passed it will be their duty to ect prog, and boldly, but it is equally their duty to place no hasty construction on note which may be capable of two interpreta- jons. THE GERMAN EMPEROR expresses the opinion that the situation is very serious, but he still hopes that peace will be maintained. ‘WINE-DRINKING MINISTERS.—The Massa- chusetts Total Abstinence Society at its monthly meeting in Boston on Thursday dis cussed ‘again the question of wine-drinking among the ministers of the Hub. William B- Spooner said that, according to his observa- tion,a great many Roman Catholic clergy drink ine and stronger liquors, though many are faithful total abstinence men, aud even the drinkers preach temperance : in the Episcopal Chureh a large proportion of the clergy drink wine ; in his own denomination, the Unitarian, about one-half; in the Universalist, a few; among the Methodists, none, the discipline of the church forbidding the practice entirely, and as to other denominations he said nothing. An address to the clergy was adopted, stating that probably over half the elergy of Boston “indulge” more or less, and that the practice isa most serious obstacle to the temperance cause, and appealing to the erring brethren to reform. THE SILVER QUESTION ABROAD.—The Lon- don Economist says investment business is much checked by the political uncertainty. The further relapse in United States bonds secompanyes an increased belief in the proba bility of the i ol establishing a silver par. We note, however, a feeling that some modification will be taken, but of what form nobody can profess to foretell. The adoption of asilver eurrency would premenly: by rais- ine the value of silver, compensate in another way. The Economist controverts the idea that a balance of trade favorable to America would prevent loss tothe bondholders, by re- marking that the adoptien of a silver par would cause so large an immediate sellin United States bonds that the balancé of in- debiedness would of necessity be against the United States. There has not been much movement in the price of silver because it is known that the rman government has a large stock of silver to dispose of, which any advance would bring upon the market. THE FATE OF CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLE.— From astudy of the subject, a German doctor has come to the conclusion that the mouoliths of Egypt decay with rapidity in European climates. Observations on the Luxor obelisk show that within the last twenty-eight years it has suffered a gradual chanj in the atmos- here of Paris. Gradually the red color of the syenite has become duller and lighter; now the obelisk bears a white film of Kaolin, the last product of the decay of granite. In thirty-six years the stone received more damage from the atmosphere of France, than during aS many centuries in Egyptian air. The injury which the moist climate of Eng- land will inflict upon Cleoperns Needle, % likely to be yet more rapid; but there is at least the consolation that its incidental injury in London fogs will not be much worse for the stone than the bad treatmeni it was receiving nits neglected state at Alexandria.
