The bank note companies are working here with an active lobby in behalf of the bill now pending for the abolition of the Bnreau of Printing and Engraving, and the transfer from it to them of ali the Treasury work. Governor Boutwell, and Mr. Shepherd, of New eting as counsel for the companies, arguments before the Banking and ommittee in favor of the bill, and bas presented an able and conelusive ent against it. The propositions clearly is conformable te all the analot ment service to have all the printing on the currency and bonds of the country done in an establishment owned by the government and administered by persons directly responsi to the Exeeulive and the Congress, proved that no other system can be ined without serious d constant risks and dangers, and great expensiveness. It is demonstrated that all the requirements of the law can be met only by the maintenance ‘of the government establishment, namely, cheapness of work, perfection of work, and safety of work. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, sustained by the law-making power, deserves to become an integral part of the administration, and, so maintained, is, and will be. of priceless value in maintaining the pre-eminence of the government issues as to excellence and perfection of protective fea- tures. The progress already made in perfect- ing the organization and work of this bureau is such as to entitle it at this critical period of its history to the friendly action of Congress, instead of being retarded and injured by pro. posed unfriendly action at the instance of those whose interests are to first cripple and then destroy it. The bill intrody House yesterday ti support of the Distric cal year ending June es of govern. government for the fis- seems to cover the points of District legislation directly needed in very simple and intelligible form. In general terms it proposes what the eitizens committee have asked in their memorial, namely, that Congress should appropriate one- half of the expenses of the District govern- ment in lieu of all appropriations for the sup- port of the police, health, and fire departments, interest on bonds, street improvements, &e. A plain, simple measure of this kind ought to have a good chance of passing without op- position, leaving for future consideration questions of suffrage, modes of taxation, &e., likely to lead to protracted debate. It is im- Peratively necessary for the oppressed and impoverished tax-payers that some measure of relief for them should be passed this session, and the bill introduced by Mr. Hendee seems to have a better chance of getting through than any other offered. +22 Ingersoll had another large audience last night, and the continuous and obstreperous applause showed that his hearers pretty unani- mously shared his antipathy to the doctrine of eternal damnation. It was noticed that many of the ladies present were quite as enthusiastic as the men; which fact may be partly ac- counted for by the eloquent blarney of the speaker in showing how shockingly women vere underrated, and made subject to men in she Bible. His impassioned denunciation of the doctrine of infant damnation also seemed to touch the sensibilities of the women, and to eause them to listen with a somewhat atten- tive ear to hisrepresentations that they, as the Principal church-goers and supporters of ehurehes, were largely responsible for the maintenance of these doctrines. But the smart and piquant speaker, while maintaining with eloquent force that a just, merciful and loving Supreme Being could not be guilty of the cruelty of condemning His children toa State of suffering in another sphere, failed to refer tw the fact that His ehildren are con- demned to suffer pain in this world, and that, reasoning from analogy, they may possibly Suffer in the next. The doctrine of a literal hell of fireand brim- Stone, with a personal devil with horns, hoofs and pitehfork, has been so long exploded, that Ingersoll was rather wasting his time in de- houncing it. ——_—__~«e. The petition to Congress to contribute the unexpended balance of the Chinese indemnity fund to the relief of the famishing citizens of China can hardly be granted If the money rightly belongs to China, it should be given ab- | solutely, without condition as to its use, and without pretence to charitable beneficence on our part ; if it belo: the same difficulty in making foreign charity from this eas from other government fund. Seruples fo precedent and the constitution are likel: prevail. The sympathy of our people for the money grant for starving Chinese must find expre vate contributions, as they have done past. in several great faminesof th Archbishop Wood evidently considers that the age of miracles is past. Father Heinen had the satisfaction of reading to his congre- gation on last Sunday the opinion of his supe rior that “what is derisively called the } Chunk miracle” is a “delusion and a pi fraud,” sures authorized by the church” will follow a repetition of such doings. So the “ecstacy” case nmst be rankea in the same category as the “suspended animation” marvel, and all modern attempts at the supernatural turn out dismal failures. and, further, that “the severest cen- ———_-+e2- —___ The January number of the London Quar- terly Review (received from E.
