The four oared shell race between rival crows of the Potomac boat club took place last evening. Quite a large crowd of specta- tors gathered at the boat house and the neigh- boring wharves, while the river was filled with all kinds of pleasure boats. Everything was favorable for an interesting contest; the water was ve! and the crews were in good condit the following men:, Been s'roke; Doyle, 3; a Eiliott_ Wheeler, stroke; Barbarin, 5; Down- man, 2; Gi bow. The course was & little over a mile down the river aad return. At 6:30 the word was given, and both crews made good starts. They passed the Potomac house bow and bow, but after reaching the Analostan boat bouse, the Elliott gradually forged ahead; but here the boats separated, the Saratoga keeping the center of the river, avd the Elliott, hugging in close to Easby’s wharf, for the purpose of taking advantage of the current of the ebannel. low Ana- lostan Island both crews straightened away for their respective stakeboats. The Elliott turned a length or more in the lead, and took the center of the river. The Saratoga pulled In close to the point of the island, and pulled hard. but they could not closeup the gap. The Elliott crew spurted from G street to the finisk, increasing their lead and coming in Several lengths ahead. Time, 1430. The vie Were greeted with applause and cheers from the 8 ators. The above boat race was the second of a series. It will be remembered that several weeks ago the first race was rowed, when the Saratoga was victorious, in 15:25. Each (rew baving now won a race, it is under- stood that the deciding contest will take ce Dext Friday at the sanie time, over the perhaps, one or two changes in the makeup of the crews. The-e races are well wo! Witnessing, for, al- though only of a friendly character, and be- tween crews of the same clab, yet the men are so well matched that the race ts sure to be interesting. On sneh occasions, the boat house js always thrown open to visitors. It will be remembered that the Potomac club. although holding the championship, some days ago, sent an invitation to their rivals, the Analostons, to meet them in friendly contest. sometime before the boating season closes, for the purpose of putting @ stop tothe complaints constantly heard on all sides that our two boating organizations no longer meet with representative crews. The Potomnes yesterday rece! &@ commu- nication from the Analosians, stating that their challenge had been received, and wou te referred to the regular meeting of the c! on the Istof Sept. The citizens of Washing ten now are greatly interested in aquatic sports, and they have rendered valuable a+ sistance to both clubs in achieving the resent high standing they hold amoug boat- Es organizations, and it is no n than due to this community that the clubs should have at least an annual race. Ti atest’ between them heretofore have always at- tracted throngs of people to the banks of the Potomac, and have created considerable general Interest. Although the Analostaas. with one exception, have coma out second best im these races, their chances of success now are much better than at any time since the two clubs have met, baving a splendid crew in training for their intended race with the Undines, of Baltimore, and it is hoped that they willaccept the offer of the Poto- macs, and give the many people who are fond of boating an opportunity of witnessing another genuine race between our two home clubs, of which they are justly proud. —_—eo——— Educational Institutions.
