All letters intended for publication, or referring in any way to the editorial department of the paper, should be addrens The Ectator of Tae Star. Those ing to ite business departments should be ad. dressed to The Publisher af The Star. Observance of these di « will prevent provoking delays. to the order of The Evensng Star Bowspaper Company —vot to that of any individnal. ications read. Bo re Sected commu: Brighter Ensiness Reports from the various commercial cities all agree in saying that business is rapidly reviving, and that the back-bone of | the hard times has finally given away. In New York, Boston and the north, the mer- chants are very much encouraged, and the report from Chicago and the west isto the effect that more business is now being trans- acted than at any period during the past sev- eral years. The immense grain crops of the ‘West and the cotton crop in the south are the jargest ever grown in this country. The bal- ance of trade with Europe is largely in our favor, and weekly shipments of gold from England to New York is becoming quite ex- tensive. Real estate the foundation of all monied wealth—so long depressed, is again being sought for as the safest of all invesi- ments. The N. Y. World inan extensive re- view of real estate market in that city shows that real property is again in active demand with a dec improved tendency in prices. tis “undeniable that all distrust” securities, whether they “be railway stocks or bank deposits,” tends to improve the value of one species of prop- erty—real estate—which cannot run away or be rendered worthless while civilization continues.” As we have here*ofore stated, the real estate market in Washington be- coming quite active again, and this is one of the surest Indications of returning confidence and a revival of business. Widticngicn comes in for a compliment from brother Moody, the revivalist, who, in bis letter dectining to pitch his tent here, #ays that he feels “that New England cities are just now the places where the harvest seems to be more specially ready for la- borers.” Brother Moody wants it understood that he has selected the wicked New England Cities only after praying for divine guidance. This is most conclusive evidence that the Wickedness of Washington is always greatly exaggerated by sensation letter writers and fault-7 citizens. Several of our southern exchanges are un- duly exercised over the statement inciden- tally roade in these columns a few days ago to the effect that the late democratic conven- tion of Virginia indorsed President Hayes. ‘The statement made was a mistake which arose from an impression cansed by the in- troduction in the convention at its second day's session of a resolution complimenting the President «for his wise and conservative @ction towards the south.” With other res>- Tutions offered, it appears on reference to the Published account of the proceedings, this Wert to the committee on resolutions, which failed to include it in the platform adopted by the convention,—a fact that the writer of the paragraph referred to happened to over- look. So far as this paper is concerned, it doesn’t make a particle of difference to it Whether all the states south of Mason and Dixon’s line endorse or condemn President Hayes or his policy, or let them severely alone. It could therefore have no pessible object in making any misrepresentation in regard to the matter, as we hope our criticis- ing contemporaries will understand. The latest comparative statement prepared by the Bureau of Statistics, showing our ex- ports aud imports for the fiscal years which ended June 30, 1575, 17" and 1577, respective- Jy, is an encouraging exhibit, since it shows & large falling off in imports and a heavy in- Crease in exports. Tne money value of the increase in onr merchandise exports since 185 is shown to be nearly 390,000,000, while $50,000,000 represents the falling off in exports fince the period named. As showing the falling off in the importation of tron and Steel it may be stated that our imports of these articles were in 1575 818,475,733; 1576, $13,191,613, 1 0,600. Of fax fabrics in 2; 1876814 446,046; 1577, $11,599,504. Of woolen fabrics we imported in 1575 $14,- $25,698 300—a de- creose of $14,000,000 since 1575. The statement also shows that American watches are rapid- ly superseding those of foreign manufacture- In 1575 we drew on Europe for watches amounting in value to $2,252,925. For the Bseal year which ended June 30th last, the Value of our imports in this line was but by These figures show that we are be- gimning not only to stand alone bat to be abundantly able to assist our nelghbors across the water to the very articles which a few years ago we were importing largely. 2+ The tipple of the Russian soldier ts t prepared in such a novel manner as sed to be recognizable under that name.
