Atabout threeo’clock yesterday afternoon, when the news had been received in Balti- more that the strike at Cumberland threat- ened to assume @ dangerous aspect, (iov- ernor Carroll beld a consultation with the officers of the Baltimore and Ohio railroai, and from the additional information thus re- ceived he became convinced that the pres- | ence of the military at Cumberland was | necessary for the preservation of peace and | order. Upon returning to Barnum’s hotel, | the Governor sent for Gen. Herbert, brigadier general of the Ist brigade M. N. G., and after short interview with him issued an order directing the ist brigade of National Guards to proceed to Cumberland. GOV. The alarm used to call ont the military Was the striking o: 151 in the City Hail and Fire Alarm Telegraph. Carroll was adverse to sounding it, fearing it would produce excite- ment, but left the matter to the discretion of Gen. Herbert, commanding the military, who decided to use it to muster the troops af the armory. The people knew wha! it meant, and it is unnecessary to say that the worst anticipations of the governor were realized. Men ard boys of all ages congregated tn front of the armories, and their ¢ actions showed that the majerity were in sympathy with the strikers, aud determined, if possibie, to prevent the ‘soldiers leaving the city for the seene of the disturbance. AS it was evident thatany unnecessary military display through the sireets of the city would ercate excitement, Gen. Herbert sent’ word the armories that the men should marci | frem their headquarters direct to Camden station. The armory of the 6th iment is located on the northwest corner of Fayette and Front streets, and at about 7 o’clock it was sur- rounded by a mob, numbering at least two thousand persons. crowd was continu- ally reinforced by fresh arrivals, and at half- past 7 o'clock an impenetrable mass of hu- manity extended along Front street, all the way from Baltimore to Gay on the north and south, and High and the bridge on the east and west. At about 7 o’clock, r the crowd had become numerous, a brickbat was thrown into the window of the door on Front street, leading to the armory. Four police- men were stationed at the door, but while they looked around to see who it was that had thrown the brick, a volley of stones and brickbats was hurled against the windows of the building, the demonstration being ac. | companied by shouts and hurrahs from what seemed a thousand throats. The police offi. cers then became aware of their perilous po- sition, but they stood their ground. They felt | that their small number was powerless to | resist the mob, and as to effecting any arrests among so many people, they knew it would become foolhardiness, leading to no results, and would ex, e their lives todanger. Four members of the regiment were stationed as a guard in front of the door, but as the bom- bardment of the building by bricks and stores continued, Col. Peters issued orders jeave their posts and enter the ar- y. This move, which the crowd regarded as an indication that the military was afrait to face the mob, appeared to give encour- agement tothe mob, and the storming of the armory byall sortsof missiles was renewed. The late comers of the 6th regiment fared badly indeed. Andrew J. George, the major of the regiment, was one of the latter, and as soon as his gray uniform came in sight We mob set upon him. He was knocked down, beaten, aud tL bruised about the body and head. With the aid ot a few orderly per- sons In the crowd and the policemen he suc- ceeded in reaching the armory, and his en- trance into the building was followed by a storm of stones thrown into the windows, mashing them to pieces. Q.C. Brown, the commi-tary of the regiment, who ventured out on the street to tell the guards to leave their was attacked by the crowd, Knocked down and kicked in the head. It Was as much as he could do to re-enter the ponte Lieutenant Welly attempted to make bis way thi the crowd to come to the armory. He fared no better than his comrades, being also assaulted and beaten. Four other members of the regi- ment, while making their way to the armory, were assaulted on Fayette street bridge aud driven back to their homes, the crowd not = them to to their destina- tion. eanwhile the rioting in front of the armory Was continued, the mob becoming bolderevery moment. Al! of the windows of the armory on Front street were broken by stones. Whenever a member ventured out on the street he was greeted with hisses and a volley of brickbats. BAD TEMPFR OF THE CROWD. ‘The hour of s p. m. arrived, but no member of the company was in a spirit to move. Every one felt that the temper of the crowd was euch that the appearance of military on tbe street would create a riot and end in bloodshed. Captain Lanman, of the Central police station, was sent for. He came, and after viewing the crowd, declared that no number of available policemen would be powerful enough to disperse the mob. The enforced “standstili” attitude of a few po- licemen on the ground added still greater confidence to the crowd, which became de- flant and uttered threats against the regi- Incnt if itsbould appear on the streets. At *:15 o'clock, the hour named for the march, the crowd bc came stronger and more aggres- sive, but the companies detailed for daty de- termined to face the crowd aud march to the station at all hazards. The companies thus ordered to march were Company I, Capt. William Tapper; Company FP, Captain J. Fallon, and Company B, Captain J.B. Duffy. They marched down stairs in files of twos, the passage doors being quite narrow. A GENERAL RIOT. Their appearance on the street was the Signal for a general riot. Stones and brick- bats, pieces of iron and other metal flew in all directions, and looking at the scene from. the window of the armory, it appeared as if every man and boy in the crowd had a mis- sile in bis hand which he intended throwing at the members of the regiment. The latter wavered and withdrew into the building. This action demoralized the members who were on the stairs, and a general retreat was the result. Col. Lem “ ressed , few Petia of encouragement to Company I, and they ventured out again. This was followed by another shower of stones, but the military were determined to march, and shots were fired into ee eee The orders were to fire above the the mob, so as to do as little yng 4 as possible. The crowd was informed by the ringleaders that the military fired bi cartridges, and, as a result, the rioters continued their jeers and attacks on the militia. When next Com- pany F appeared on the street the mob pur- sued the same line of attack. This company. like the one which preceded it, became dis. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
