At the meeting of the Board of Public School Trustees last evening Trustes W. H. hrowne, in presenting the list of teachers of the second district for confirmation, notic- ing that a large proporiton of the first names terminated with the fashionable and foo! ish “te,” called ettention to the fact and changed them tothe proper names in each ca - cept that of Miss Dalton, who was christened Sallie. This was a proper thing to do. The ellie, Bellie, Mattie, Nannie, Sal- Jennie, Minnie, Virgie, Lollie, ile line of pet names may do for the ie, pootsie, pupils of an infant t when young ladies have reached years of discretion, entitling them to take the responsible position of teachers in our they should drop these tender minutives; and !f they do not do their own volition the school board do it for them, The President is quite right in his inten- tion to protaulgate an orler forbidding all federal officers from participating in politi- cal caucuses and conventions or serving on political committees. This will be a long stride im the direction of civil service reform. Polities should have nothing whatever to do with federal appointments. What the coun- try wants is honest and faithful public ser- without reference to politics. The ticians don’t Leswrsel So, but the people do. ites The school board did a very “proper and just thing last night in reinstating Mr: John E. Thompson as supervising prineipal of the Fourth District. For twenty-seven years Mr. Thompson held the front rank of honor 4s an educator in our city, and his displace ment last year caused the deepest feeling, not only in the Fourth District, the field of his faithful labors, but also amongst our best people throughout the eity—citizens who had from a life-longassociation with him learned to appreciate his sterling qualities as a man- We sympathize with them all in the feeling Of deep satisfaction with which they will learn of his reinstatement and vindication. ‘We congratulate our sehoo! authorities, and the teachers also, upon the prospect of a har- topious and successfal prosecution of tueir arduous and honorable duties for the coming year, and now let us hope that all dissen sions and bitterness of feeling tending to fmnpair the usefulness of our noble system of public schools may be buried for all time. ———__-<e--____ The appeal of the people of St. John’s for material aid should find a generous response from Americans, and it is gratifying to note that many of our large cities are sending contributions for the relief of the suffering. Strange to say, the great city of New York is yet to be heard from. Her eitizens, how- ever, are seldom behind-hand in charitable works of this kind. = SS ——— It was Bret Harte who first asserted, with- out apparent fear of successful contradic- Uon, that “ For ways thatare dark and tricks that are vain the heathen Chinee ts pecu- Mar.” Stuce then a number of illustrations of the native shrewdness of th: almond- eyed celestials have been given. One was afforded in New York the other day, where Chang Ab Tong, a Chinaman, was tried for forging the signature of a fellow country- man, named Sam You, to a receipt fora money order for $12). Chang and Sam were partners ina cigar store, and the former de- Posited $120 in the money order office, it was alleged, signing his partner's name in Chi- neese characters to the receipt. It came out on the trial that when Chang Ah Tong signed the receipt he said to the post office official, indicating the signature, “This meanee Sam You,” when the fact was that it meant “Chang Tong.” The prosecuting attorney finding that by a shrewd trick he had evaded the pains and penalties of forgery, entered a noile prosequi, and the “heathen Chinee” was discharged. ae American skippers do not appear to have a@ very exalted notion of the skill and vigt!- ance of I:ussian sailors. A vessel is now loading with ‘arms at New Haven whose destination is Turkey, and her captain (an American) is representing as saying that he bas no fear of Russian vessels, because they are manned by dull sailors from whom he could escape before they got their guns Treaty for action. ——_——-«ee-__ Even the advocates of prohtbition must admire the frankness of Mayor Prince, of Boston, who, when waited upon by a dele- gation of ladies yesterday and asked not to allow intoxicating liquors at the banquet to be given in honor of President Hayes, aid taat he could not grant their request: that he SpPproved of the moderate use of wine and liquor; and that, as it was uswal to farnish Wine on such occasions as the oue he referret to, he should not depart from the custom. ‘The ladies were douptless a little surprised at this declaration, but still the mayor's ean- dor was far preferable to evasion, which ‘would have been resorted to by many under —_—_—_<+e--___ General Grant donned his major general's uniform for the first time in England last ’‘sht. He is permitted by law to wear the © ‘form of bis highest volunteer rank, and fo. bat matter no one would objeci to his Wea: ~g the aniform ofa general of the army. There are many of bis friends on this side th ter, however, who would have Preferred that he continue to attire himself in plain ci. zens’ dress. But then it’s a mere matter of ta: It appears that, owing t to the small appro- priation made by Congress for the pay of jetter-carriers, the Postmacter General is compelled either to reduce the number of carriers at the free-delivery offiees, or their compensation. Postmaster James, of New York, will, itis sal, protest, but his remon- Strance will be unavailing, as the Postmas- ter General has no discretion in the matter. ‘There are four classes of letter-carriers,com- Prising the auxiliaries, at $100 per annum; carriers of the frst year, at $675; of the sec- ond year, at $775; and of the third year, at S575, It is these miserable pittances in the Way Of salaries which the last Congress, in its wisdom, felt impelled to reduce. We irast that the next Congress will be more ‘teera}, and will make the compensation of these worthy publie servants commensurate with the arduous du: »s they are called upon to — ———__~<+e--__ » Russians are crossing the Danube in fever - and thus far withoat apparent Opposi- “on.
