Boynton writes as follows to the Cincinnati Gazette concern- ing the extraordinary report made by the freasury committee upon the Printing bu- The Secretary of the Tr ary is not very well pleased with the repe of the eommii- tee on the printing division of the Treasury. The chief objection seems to be the exagger- ated presentation of abuses asan illustrauon of the present condition of the work and force as compared with the time when three or four times as much Work as at present was ingdone. When the commissioners began all hands were frightened lest their dis charge would be recommended unless they turned out a great ammount of work. The total work done wader this kind of spur and Strain appears tohave been accepted asa fur measure Of What each one could do regal and asastandard by which to measure proper force. ‘The ridiculous point that among the abuses was the not deducting the pay for holidays is cited here as an evidence of the extreme to which the commitiee went to make a@ showing against the bureau. Every member of the committee bas been recelvii.g pay for years for holidays: and for &@ month vacation, be-ides, every year. But the strong criticism upon the report is that it virtually recommends the abolish- ment of the F eigpeno J division and the per- formance of the work of the government by private companies. The showing is made that this would be cheaper at the prices which now prevail, but little is said of he government not being at the merey of the hank note companies, ition to the re- port bas aito been exel by the fact that the agents of the note companies were on the ground the moment the report was ready, and before anything more than the proof had been printed, calling the attention of corre- spondents to it, to insure its being sent. There bas doubtless been grave abuses, which need correction, but correcting these and the abolition of the division are two very different things. As a matter of fact, most of the improvements recommended by this commission have already been effected by Mr. McPherson since he took charge of ‘the bureau.” —_—_—__-+se-___—. Life at Rock Enon.
