All this may be true, but it will nevertheless be doubted by many. Mr. Conkling earnestly supported the bill ere- Slectoral Commission, and made along speech in its behalf. The fact that he has kept aloof from the present administra- tion and has asked no favors, however, lends color to the supposition that be is inimical to it. ating ———~re--—__ Just as everybody began to predict the final settlement of all our Indian trou along comes the report of another Iv outbreak in the tar nerthwest. it 1s us to indulge the hope that there will be no more Indian wars. At the Centennial exposition last year the exhibit of the American manufacturers was a sur- prise to many Europeans, and a large Ger- Ioan Manufacturer, who employs 5.00 looms, said that, knowing the difficulties under which American manufacturers labor, he had no worls to express his admiration at their success. The report of the American Association, presented a short time since, devotes considerable space to the discussion of frauds upon the revenue by the under- valuation of silk goods in invoices entered in the custom-house, and calls upon honest men Of all classes in the sti business, who have suifered by these frauds, to join in sup. Pressing them, since the injury falls upon our importing houses and on foreign manu- facturers, as well as upon our makers of silk goods. ee Quoting a recent editorial paragraph from THE STAR in regard tocertain prominent citizens of Lee county, Va., asking for troops to aid In arresting the illicit distillers who recently murdered several internal rev- enue employes, the Richmond S’ate says that the collector of the district where the murders occurred asterts that there is no need of any further assistance in putting down these outlaws, and the application to Commissioner of Internal Revenue must have been made without his authority. a In their report to the Secretary of the Treasury the committee appointed to inves- ligate the Bureau of Engraving and Print- ing state that as one evidence of the reck- lessness which characterized the former conduct of the bureau that the employes were actually paid for holidays! Consider- ing the fact that allof the members of the committee are in receipt of fat salaries, are Paid for Sundays and holidays, and also during a month’s leave of absence, while the employes of the bureau, as a rule, received but $1.0 per day, excepting Sundays, and had but four or five holidays during the year, this fling Is rather small business. Governor Hampton's speech up in New York state the other day was a manly, Straightforward utterance, and ts calculated toenhance the respect for him of those who desire to see fair play in South Carolina. Bat after all we suspect that Goy. Hampton will never be re-elected goveraor of South Carolina. The press is unanimous in coudemning the conduct of the members of the suspended class at Princeton Coilege, and in commend- ing Dr. ash for his action in publicly disgracingthem. The young rowdies seemed to have no adequate conc eption of the cow ardiy nature of their offence, but left for bome singing merrily as though the whol< thing was a very funny joke. Their parents have by this time probably convineed them Of their rr istake, and it is tobe hoped that before they are restored in the college they Will be made to publicly apologize for their misec — = mnurde wretches hang yesterday were say that they forgave ery good .
