~ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: and anti-Kelly wings of the democracy. It 4s stated on the one hand that Mr. Tilden’s friends distrust Jobn Kelly, and the Ta: many general committee; that they fear that Kelly will sacrifice the Presidential ticket to the local ticket; that he will sell votes for Bayes for votes for Smith Ely & Co.; and that if Kelly, himself, is above doing this dishonorable thing his followers will do it. On the other hand it is asserted that the Tammany men believe that they are to be sacrificed by the friends of Mr. Tilden; that the latter propose to use the independent Movement in bebalf of Comptroller Green to defeat Smith Ely, and the Tammany county ticket, and at the same time to pre- Vent any loss to the Presidential ticket by defection from the regular democratic ore ganization. There is also @ rumor that Kelly is to be deposed from the Tammany dictatorship, but as there is no immediate election for that position in the Tammauy order, it Is not easy to see how that is to be « fected Meantime overtures have been made to the republicans by the Independent Citi- zen’s party, the anti-Tammany party, and other organizations to join in a coalition of all the elements of opposition to the Tam- many county ticket. The republican lead- ers are undecided bow to act In the premises and bave adjourned their coanty convention until next Tuesday evening to consider the matter. It is @ question with them whether anti Tammany and the rest, after getting their (republican) votes for the anti-Tam- many county ticket, will not “go back oa them” on the state and natioual ticket, and whether it will not really serve to draw out an increased Tilden vote by bringing all the disafected anti-Tammany democrats to the polls, where they will very likely vote for Tilden and Hendricks while voting against Tammany for the local offices. The New York Post thinks that tf between now and Tuesday the ramor of a breaci: in the democratic party shall be confirmed, it is not improbable that the republicans will take the chances of running ™ a straight repub- Mean county ticket between the opposing forees of Tammany and anti-Tammany; but that pepe: adds suggestively that if they do 80 “It Is not Improbable that they will mis- calculate the chances.” 2 — Baitimore has a sensible Enoch Arden, if apy of the vagabonds may be called sensi- bie. The Baltimore Arden was the driver of an ice cart and the possessor of a wifs aad children. Three years ago he took it into his head to go west. He never informed his family of his whereabouts, and the other day turned up in Baltimore, after three years’ absence, to find that his wife, be- Heving him dead, had remarried. He there- fore wisely determined to accept the sitaa- Uon, and will make no contest for the posses- sion of the woman he so shamefully aban- doned. ——_____-ee- “Little Jonnny Davenport,” as he is deri- sively called in New York, graduated under General Butler when the latter commanded the army ofthe James. Though but a mere Stripling at the time, he was provost mar- shal of the army referred to, and in that capacity evinced executive ability which would have done credit to a much older offi- cer. The republicans now look to “little Johnny” as their main hope in preventing frauds in New York on election day. While at the republican national headquarters in that city, yesterday, he said that his eight bundred assistants were busily engaged in the work of revising the registry lists, and would be prepared to check all illegal voting. As a rule, little Johnny knows whathe is talking about, and it is possiole that he and his force may be abie, in a great measure, to prevent the wholesale frauds at tne ballot- box which bave so long disgraced New York city. Already, it is reported in the New York Evening Post. no less than 1,900 illegal registrations bave been discovered in Brook- lynalone. It will require the utmost vigi- lance and the prompiest action to prevent illegal voting, and it would seem to be the duty of all good citizens, irrespective of party, to aid the proper authorities to the The latest invention is @ Tilden and fien- dricks lead pencil intended to be sharpened @t both ends. Oneend bears in gtit letters the bame “Tilden” and the other end the The peculiarity of the pencil is that while the Tilden end is very bard the Hendricks end is very soft. Governor Hayes best Governor Tilden at Philadelphia, if not by a large majority by @t least a respectable one. The attendance 118.488, and yesteriay 25,268, or 6780 more. It may further be stated that on New York day the attendance was largely swelled by the national gathering of Odd Fellows then in Philadelphia. On the other band, it may be said that the average attesdance during the past ten days has been much larger than it was last month. which fact may accoant im a meesure for the great number of visitors 02+ _____ The Boston correspor dent of the Spring field Heyutlicon (anti-Batier) “fears” that Butler will beat Tarbox (dem ) by 2,000 piu- rality avd Hoar (apti- Butler rep.) by fiveor six thousand for Congress. He thinks Dr. Loring (rep.) will be beaten for Congress, but that Bangs will get in by not more than 1,000 or 1.200 majority. The democrats, he says, are giving Clafiin a hard ran in the 8th district. | The St. Petersburg papers hint that in the eventof Russia becoming involved in war With England on ihe Eastern question, Ras- aia, disregarding the Declaratioa of Par: ie 1886, which abolished privateering, will issue letters of marque. This utterance is held to bave significance, as no Russian journal Would speak without official sanction upon @ matter of this kind. Doubtiess it was in- tended to touch the sensitive commercial nerve of Evgland, and remind her where she is vulnerable in case of hosiilities. Tue ex- posed condition of ber com merce is her weak point in timeof war. As Rass! Violated the main provisions of the treaty of Paris, there is little probability taat she would regard the argameat against priva- veering.
